Viruses are frustrating. I have a teenager, too. 😉 and all that goes with that. Nice tools. I have a set of Starrett mikes up to 12" but it's missing the 3-4" and 4-5" mikes. Beautiful set, just need to plug the gap. Nice video. Thanks John

John Bazaar Thanks John - I am trying to fill in a couple more sizes to get me up to 12" with dedicated mics. I can get there now with my adjustable set, but it will me much nicer to have a dedicated mic that I don't have to change anvils on and calibrate for each range of sizes.

@12345NoNamesLeft9 жыл бұрын
ElectricGears That's exactly what I was going to say, they're conditioning people to be ignorant of file types. Never loan a computer, just keep one old computer to do your downloading on it. If you use Adblock Plus, it blocks a lot of the ads and malware links.
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
ElectricGears I agree. I usually have the file types showing but never did this on this particular computer. Stupid me. Of course, with my daughter plugging away, she probably would not have noticed. She learned a very valuable lesson in all of this....
@davidhoward22379 жыл бұрын
ElectricGears I understand why one reason they dont make it default is when you rename most people wouldn't keep the extension and wont be able to use the file, What would be nice is to show file extension but not be able to change it without going throw settings.

The new involute cutter is for a bevel gear...The profile will probably be a bit different from that of a cutter for a spur..
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
Mike G Yes, some others have pointed that out as well. I totally missed that.... The auction did not specify it was for a bevel gear nor did it give a picture of the actual gear. I am disappointed and could kick myself for not seeing the clearly stated sticker on the front that said BEVEL!

Hi Keith. Greetings from Denmark. I have a question for you. Do you often calibrate your micrometers, and if you do, what is the procedure? Keep the videos comming :-) Best wishes, Jan
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
Jan K Jensen Jan - yes, I often check the calibration, particularly when making something from a drawing and I do not have a part to fit to. The procedure is pretty simple, you use a "standard" rod that is exactly the small length of the micrometer and adjust the barrel of the micrometer so that it reads zero. It is really pretty simple.

I'm having trouble coming up with a suitable fate for the horrible people who create destructive malware and viruses like that. Maybe we should chain them to a chair and force them to repair infected and misconfigured computers for 16 hours a day for the next 5 years. I can't understand what motivates people to try to fool random masses of strangers into clicking on or running some nasty little program that effectively screws up a computer to the point that it's unusable. It's not like the user will be able to buy their product or visit their site or whatever (even if they, for some perverse reason, wanted to), or the computer will be able to send info or perform a task, once it's loaded up with all that crap. It's like these idiots have no purpose in mind other than to cause as much aggravation and suffering as possible, for no apparent end reason. As a self-taught computer expert, and builder and maintainer of computers for a large extended family, you have my deepest sympathies.
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
Scott Anderson Thanks Scott. Yes, if we could just get all of the people on this earth who waste so much energy bringing bad things to put that effort into good, what a better place this would be for everybody. I will never understand.... Good news is that my computer is back alive and well. I took jumping through some hoops, but after much aggravation, all is well.

I just hate those dirty little hackers, what a bummer to have to endure! Thanks for sharing all of that stuff with us and also congratulations on your daughter's graduation which I'm certain has already happened by now. Hiya Keith: Be careful with that gear cutter-do you really want to cut a bevel gear? If you need to cut a standard spur gear, that cutter wont give the proper profile.
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
Andy Wander Not sure I am following you - involute cutters are made for cutting spur gears, not bevel gears. I am pretty darn sure I have the correct cutters.....
@andywander9 жыл бұрын
Andy Wander Hi Keith-look at the cutter it is marked as a bevel gear cutter. B & S had a whole selection of cutters for bevel gears, separate from the ones for spur gears and racks.
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
Andy Wander So, I went out to the shop and looked and sure enough, it is for cutting bevel gears. I had totally missed that. The frustrating thing is that the auction did not show the actual cutter and it was sold as a regular involute cutter. Oh well, live and learn - and back on the search for the proper cutter again. Thanks for pointing that out before I messed up a bunch of parts.....

One reason they stop sending it out because they partition the hdd and they put it on there, If you give me the model number or even the brand be happy to look up or just google it and *(model number) recovery key* and see what key you need to push to load it, If you got a extra usb drive you can dl ubuntu and install on usb, plug in computer and you be able to run it live without installing anything,and grab files

David Howard My computer (a Dell) did have the recovery partition. I called tech support, but the hard drive was so messed up that we could not even get to the recovery partition to restore everything. They were very helpful and quickly got me the media I needed along with great instructions on how to re-build the drive with all of the correct drivers. While not painless, it was probably the easiest OS reinstall I have ever done (and I have done many....)

Hopefully this will never happen again, Keith. But if it does, have a USB-bootable Linux (ie: ubuntu) drive and immediately yank the power cord from your PC. Reboot it with the Linux drive and now you can see all that is going on with your Windows OS and perhaps run an antivirus on the Linux side that will fix your Windows installation. Microsoft Security Essentials, aka Windows Defender is an excellent and free antivirus. Glad to see you were able to fix it eventually.
@VintageMachinery9 жыл бұрын
JRoque250 I have a pretty good antivirus program, but in this case, it was being over ridden by my daughter basically forcing the computer to run the virus when she thought she was playing a song. Very clever of whoever wrote this one - basically tricking the operator to override the virus software....
@JRo2509 жыл бұрын
Keith Rucker - VintageMachinery.org Good deal, Keith. IMHO, Microsoft has the best AV software, and it is free. But yes, social engineering (ie: getting people to do the hacker's bidding) is the most effective way to infect a machine. It might be a pain but here's a suggestion: create an account for your users other than yourself. That account should be set to "limited" access so it would make it much more difficult to override the prompts and security features. Your daughter comes around wanting to use your PC and you just "switch users" to her account. In fact, it's even better to always run on this lower-class account. You will be prompted for the administrator's password (that only you know) whenever a higher level action is required.

Hello Keith, Bad luck that your pc crashed because of that bad mp3 file, or better say the wannabee mp3 file with a big virus in it. Strange that your virusscanner didn't react and warned her when your daughter opened it. I use since several years Eset Nod32 and I download also music, films etc.. ( only the ones I have originals from ) but Eset always warns me when something is wrong with a file. When you have an working pc or laptop you can also download an copy from Windows and make an bootable dvd or usbstick but I'm not shure what version of Windows you use. When you use Windows 8.1 you can go to windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media Anyway again a nice Odds and Ends and many greetings from Roel !
