Great episode. I enjoy listening to you, your voice has a soothing quality to it. As far as the odds and ends it is fun to watch. I think you are spot on in showing the items that people take the trouble and expense to send to you, in my opinion it is the polite thing to do. I admire the fact that you mention that you attend church. Keep it up Brother. Thanks and, God bless.

Hey Keith, Yep, new springs with correct compression are needed. I doubt you need to fabricate new part. Just my thought, if ball bearings continue to slip with new springs, fill grooves in between ball bearings with some hard weld rod then mill down to correct dimensions.

you commented as you have in passed videos that some people don't care to see other tool and such and only prefer to see machining. I like both! this time, however, I remembered a quote, I think from Ben Franklin, " An open mind will learn much and a closed mind will learn little".( well that's as close to the quote as I remember ) when I was in school I didn't understand it or cared to, until after I graduated and started working in mills. and seeing different machines and how they were built.. these videos are always informative for me. thank you for sharing !

Events sure do conspire against you sometimes, keep your chin up Keith and you will prevail, you are helping others even though your own jobs sometimes take the backseat, but it's all for the best, I will keep watching and looking forward to the more repairs, furnace build, and the casting adventures to come. as for the mill part, i think that part is just fine it will always wear a bit of a track, ive seen it on various motorcycle parts, , the springs are both tired and wrong, and once you find out the real spec (compression strength and free length) and replace with all matching, the issue will go away (assuming what it drives is free of binding and excessive load, may be wise to check its really free), if you are still concerned as to the part, you could just make the ball seats a bit deeper, but need a carbide ball mill of the right size and flush the surface down a tad, but i dont think it needs to be, The original issue is the springs under constant pressure have lost their strength (the missing ones possibly broke) , someone took it apart and lost some and replaced with whatever, making the issue worse, it needs new springs simpy
@PaulMorgan1

jusb1066 Agreed. Fresh springs are probably all it needs. They're just old and worn out.

Hey Keith, great video. Watching this was like sitting in your shop and having you talk to me. Your die hard fans all know that you work for a living and that what we see here is all on your free time! The stuff that your viewers send you is a testament of our love for what you do for us, and in a way, I think it's a way to encourage you to keep on posting. Some of the posts below about that part with all the springs, yeah, I agree with them, new springs and as you stated the balls were too big? That's a minor problem when you buy a suit, but in some kind of clutch, that can be a big problem (pun intended). I'm dying for the next forge video, but I will wait patiently (when, WHEN!). :) Rich PS, I'll be watching for that tongue!

Rich206L Rich - I am hoping to find some time this week to work on the furnace. My next step requires setting everything outside the shop to keep from making too big of a mess and every evening this week it has been raining when I get home. We need the rain as it has been very dry this spring for us, but it is keeping me from getting work done! I promise not to complain - I have to remind myself that we need the rain..... I hope to get the milling machine put back together this weekend and I will keep my fingers crossed that everything works out.

I love my 18N's I have 4 in my shop and I use them all a ton, they are the best size for most all of my work. I have several Kennametal Harvi end mills and they cut greatespecially on tough materials! Mine all take ANGT inserts which is the big drawback. It is very possible that the springs would be mismatched so that the proper tension is applied for the corrcet slip clutch torque. Putting all heavier springs in it could cause it to not slip and break the shaft or something instead.
@VintageMachinery
@VintageMachinery 9 жыл бұрын
bcbloc02 I have ordered some new springs that are all the same length but with roughly the same pressure as what is currently in there. I am also going to replace all of the balls as I got to measuring them and they have been replaced with 8mm ball bearings - the literature says they should be 5/16" which makes them about 0.020" over size. The over size balls probably are not seating all the way down in the detents which I suspect is also part of the problem.
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 9 жыл бұрын
Keith Rucker - VintageMachinery.org That form of clutch drives via shear of the ball so the contact of the drive gear holes to the drive hub plate is critical. You may need to shim that outer washer with the splines between it and the snap ring to get a good fit, you don't want any rock or clearance as that ruins the proper shear line and greatly reduces the torque capacity of the clutch.

Keith Here's what I would do. Start by measuring every detail of the hub and create a drawing. Size up a new set of springs based on the long ones. They're the ones that will give you the most consistent preload. Measure wire diameter and free length. Find a supplier that can get you close. You know who they are. Depending on how much trouble it is to reassemble, put the clutch assembly together and try it to see if you can get by with it until you can build a new hub. With those short and missing springs, you are losing about half the strength of the clutch. The wear in the pockets is adding to it so the hub needs to be replaced as well, but you might get it back in service by replacing the springs. My two cents. Thanks John
@VintageMachinery
@VintageMachinery 9 жыл бұрын
John Bazaar Thanks John - that is pretty much what I think I am going to do. I am inquiring to see if a new part is available and if so for how much money. Assuming no part is available or it is too expensive, I will replace the springs and balls (they are actually oversize for some reason) and I might try and freshen up the detent holes and put it back together until I can build a new part.

Hi Kieth; I had a french machine that used a similar system. The groove is supposed to be there. The ball beaings are supposed to be slightly larger than the holes. From looking at it the longer springs are correct. I would fully expect that a full set of proper springs would make it work like new.
@VintageMachinery
@VintageMachinery 9 жыл бұрын
Mark Bernier I found the specs on the ball bearings and the ones that are in there are indeed over sized. They are supposed to be 5/16" but the ones that are in there are 8mm, which comes out to about 0.020" too large. I am going to replace the ball bearings and the springs and see if that fixes things.

Hi Keith, i think your analysis is correct and the springs should all be the same, however, you could use 2 spring lengths to get a progressive rate effect for the whole clutch. regarding the mill project my thoughts: first preference would be as u suggested and use all equal strength springs, however failing that I would space out the odd ones equally around circumference. as for the repair to the base place where the balls sit, maybe a simple fix (compared to re-manufacturing a new one) would be to fill the holes with JB weld and use a ball end-mill to cut new holes . just food for thought Keith Cheers Biily..
@VintageMachinery
@VintageMachinery 9 жыл бұрын
Billy T I doubt that JB Weld would last very long. The bottom plate is made of hardened steel now and there is already wear on that piece! But, I will plan to replace the springs and balls with new ones and give that a try first.

I bet stronger springs will fix your problem. If the balls can easily lift high enough to rotate out of the seats, they are going to follow that path of least resistance. I'd definitely replace the springs first. If you do end up having to make a new part, would their be a chance to save the hub and just make a new plate? I have a similar clutch in the apron of my Clausing lathe.
@VintageMachinery
@VintageMachinery 9 жыл бұрын
Jack Hoying I have already ordered some new springs. If nothing else, they will all be the same length and strength - right now, there are about three different lengths and a couple of different strengths. Also, I discovered that the ball bearings that were installed were a little too large - according to the documentation I have, they should be 5/16" but instead were 8mm - about 0.020" oversize. That too is probably a problem as the oversize balls would not seat properly. I will probably try this before replacing the part.

touch up the ball detents with the a ball nose end mill. you just need a certain amount of "grab" on the balls which has worn away. a slightly deeper detent should do the trick. beefier springs might do it, but i think the worn edge of the detent would still allow for an easy way for the balls to slip and bigger springs would accelerate the wear. the outer and inner edges (not worn) of each detent should give you an idea of how "sharp" the edges were originally.
@jeffren70
@jeffren70 9 жыл бұрын
chuckbuckets1 I was going to suggest the exact same thing. Trying to weld or heat the part in any way will cause warping or cracking. touching up the detent and maybe stronger springs is the way to go.

ZIGgassedUP Right now, the clutch is slipping about every time I use the rapid traverse - particularly when raising the table. But I agree that new springs might be enough to fix the problem - and they are already ordered!

If you are working on a 2h,those ball bearings are supposed to be 5/16 dia according to my book.. The springs are probably special and as the clutch release springs are similar, I had good luck finding them at Macmaster Carr co....I would measure the shorter springs and order that size if possible.. They are probably correct .. If the new ones are a bit longer, probably all the better.. This slip clutch was added to the early 2h machines lot #2353 and I am sure it saved many machines from destruction specially during wartime production.. Mike

Mike G Yes, I found the same spec on the ball bearings. The ones in my machine are a bit over size though - they measure 8mm, which is about 0.020 large. I have already ordered new springs and ball bearings from McMaster-Carr and I am hopeful that this will fix the problem.

Hi Keith, just a thought could you metal spray the clutch part and re-machine it, I noticed Adam had the metal spraying gear if you don't have the equipment, that and new springs be good as new. Tony

Tony Burndred I somehow doubt that spray welding would do the trick for this application. The metal on this part is hardened and I would be afraid that the spray welding would wear away too quickly.

It's hard to make a judgement from this end, but if you think as part of the clutch design, is to have the balls slip to other holes while under stress, it seems to me there may have been a slight groove there originally, to help track them to the next hole/holes. The point is, that its kind of hard to make a new part if unsure how the original part was. I think marrying a new disk to the existing hub (if undamaged) is the way to go. Keith Fenner may have some insight regarding the part, and it shouldn't take too long to put the word out to see what the chances are of finding a new or different one.....it just seems to me that I had heard of someone that took over the Kearney inventory or at least the parts drawings...With PM and all of your subs....I'm sure the answer is not far in the future. Proceeding as you are with new springs and balls (and detailing the measurements on the parts) is the best way to proceed. Congrats on the "haul"!....you deserve it! Great vid, Jim
@VintageMachinery
@VintageMachinery 9 жыл бұрын
Jim Liechty Jim, I am nearly certain that the grooves are not original. There is no need for them as the holes in the gear that the springs pass through will keep the balls aligned properly so that they can slip from one detent to the next. Besides, the groove looks to be be wear and not machine - it would be nearly impossible to machine a grove to match what is there. With all that said, I have been able to determine that there are some other issues with this assembly - the ball bearings used are not to original spec and are about 0.020" larger than they should be. This is causing them to not seat all the way to the bottom of the detents and I think that is as much of a problem as anything. I am going to try replacing the springs and ball bearings and see if that fixes things before trying to make or purchase a new part.

Please don't over complicate the fix, change all of the springs, the wear is not going to have a big affect on the resistance of moving the balls out of the holes, the slip action requires lifting all the balls out of the holes, once they are lifted, they move into the wear groves, but they have to lift first!

I see you have springs&balls on order. You might consider that whoever was in there last replaced parts with the wrong parts. The balls being oversized is an issue. If the springs were replaced with the wrong ones that are the wrong strength your new ones of the same strength will probably slip. Maybe the part number could be crossed to tell you the wire gauge and turns of the originals?
