Love Zasu she was amazing, funny very talented in all she did
@barnegatshoals15 жыл бұрын
ZaSu is hardly obscure! She was a dramatic actress in silent films (star of von Stroheim's all-time classic 'Greed'). When talkies arrived, she was discovered to have an impeccable comedic ability and landed her own film short series (opposite Thelma Todd) produced by Hollywood's greatest comedy producer, Hal Roach. She worked in films all her adult life and made the transition to television, appearing on everything from Perry Mason, Jackie Gleason, Kraft Television Theatre and Gale Storm Show.

I heard that her mannerisms served as inspiration for the character Olive Oil from Popeye as well as Yvonne DeAngelo's Lily Munster.

The series of comedies ZaSu made with Thelma Todd in the early 1930s are very funny. ZaSu was indeed the real-world model for Popeye's love interest, Olive Oyl. She's kind of toning it down here compared to decades earlier.

It's just an old commercial, folks. For corn flakes. It wasn't meant for viewers sensibilities of 2011.

My condolences to those who made comments equating anger with domestic violence. I do hope you seek and receive the help you need to overcome the tragic events that must have occurred in your life that caused you to come to such conclusions. Just a word before the snarky comments begin, it is possible for one to be angry without being violent.

The announcer was Charlie Lyon, the "voice" of Kellogg's cereals on TV and radio AT THE TIME, and announcer in the original "SUPERMAN" opening title {"KELLOGG's- The Greatest Name In Cereals- presents...'THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN'!"}. This spot was usually seen at the end of "THE ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN" in the 1955-'56 season.

Even if Superman did deliver Kellogg's Corn Flakes he'd have a tough time keeping everybody happy. More people ran out of them every morning than any other cereal. Because Kellogg's Corn Flakes tastes best to more people. Always have, still do. Don't run out at your house! Remember anytime you buy a cereal of any kind pick up a spare package of, Kellogg's Corn Flakes!

From Wikipedia: "Her stock persona (a fretful, flustered, worrisome spinster) made her instantly recognizable and was often imitated in cartoons and other films." Apparently, this was her schtick.

Huge fan os Zasu and Thelma Todd. Popeye's Olive Oyl is a caricature of Zasu's voice and mannerisms. "Oh Dear". She kinda looks like her at times too, though much exagerated of course.

I agree that I don't like the tone of this commercial, with a wife being scared and panicky because her husband always gets "SO mad" if they're out of corn flakes. In the '50s that was considered a joke about people who'd been married a long time, not an implication of spouse abuse.

Yup, that was von Stroheim. It's sort of fun to piece some of movie history together. "Sunset Blvd." is a campy classic - shades of Michael Jackson before he was born.

I love that people are still alive and actually running things today who grew up with commercials where the main premise was that an "absent minded" woman would be punished with violence by her husband for her negligence and yet some people still think misogyny isn't a "thing" anymore lol!
