Great video brother, spot on. Thank you for sharing First time I met Kelly wasn’t in the water. I was at rehearsal with Dakota Motor Co. and PK was taking a break, I step out of the room and Rob whom I’ve surfed with (Seaside/Palisades) is standing there with Kelly and I laughed and said “ Don’t you have some perfect barrel to be in?” Rob’s eyes wide open shaking his head. Kelly and I laughed spoke a few polite words and parted. The true measure of an athlete of his caliber is (take knowledge from anything anywhere that is helpful to your profession and forget the rest). In this instance, Drumming. Using all your Extremities at once (Ambidextrous) ie-switch foot in surfings case is what we both walked away with from our polite conversation. Due to Muscular dystrophy I can mo longer surf (crushing) however I can share my 38+ years semi pro experiences with others. Take care of your body and Mother Ocean. 🤙🏼🌊🔱

Man I discovered your channel today and it is awesome, I need to learn from you! Do you sponsor old guys who are trying as hard as they can to stay in surf shape??? I am 51 years old. In my late teens and early 20s I used to surf competitively all the time and several people told me if I stuck with it I could turn pro( I actually met Slater and surfed with him in the late 80s and early 90s). Late twenties got married and had children. I would not trade my wife and kids for anything, but my surfing really dropped off. Moved away from the ocean (4 hours away from good surf now) through my 30s and 40s everytime I went surfing I was devastated at my complete loss of ability to surf the way I used to, or even remotely close to how I used to surf... I felt like an 80 year old man trying to be a teenager again. Then, last year happened. My wife and I booked a house at the beach for 2 weeks in the summer. Months in advance, I began training- and I WENT NUTS TRAINING!!!! I decided to just give it one all-in give it everything you got last shot, what is my potential now in my 50s? I jumped rope nearly everyday, paddled for 30 to 40 minutes per day on the local river and in the swimming pool, I did Tae Bo, I did a Surf Strong Workout- I did on average 2 workouts per day.... When we went to the beach I bought a brand new board that was on sale for $400, a 6'0" egg. It was magic.... I never thought it was possible, but because of my diet, exercise program and determination, I felt like I was in my 20s again. It was one of the most joyous experiences of my life. I was like saying Its not over! I can still surf on a high level! Im not that old! Now- Im getting ready to surf again in a couple of weeks, going for 2 solid weeks- I want to take it all to the next level- And I am now just asking the question- How far can I take it at 51? How good can I get?

Drugs. Only drugs! TRT test replacement therapy. I started at 48 but was already super fit and daily high level expert wave surfer around the world form airline jobs, but testosterone was the best thing I did, I treated my body well all these years so I have ZERO QUALMS about doing it now. I’m going to bang out my last 20-30 then fade away. Fuck that! I’m doing drugs in my old years! 😉🫣🤣

as a body surfer , to becomes clear that modifying one's behavior to better align with the energy around you is essential , at any skill level, in and out of the water. if you are good enough , the waves come to you . simple.

TRT…haha. Best thing I ever did…I waited till 48 to start though so I don’t mind the small insignificant damage it might do this late in life. This is my reward for being good all those years

Subscribed and stoked I'm 59 on a 5-year comeback. And it goes up and it goes down. It's swinging up right now... You're breathing video is still kind of weird I used to paddle Fiur strokes per breath. Trying to change that one in one out is still a little weird... But I'm going to keep working on it see if it works.

Amazing video, learnt a lot from this. Kelly is a great example to everyone around the world, athletes and non-athletes. Could you please consider doing a video specialising on the topic of how to balance training in the gym and surfing? I am a 16 year old surfer and want to try to get into the gym to improve my surfing and overall fitness/health but I don't want to sacrifice surfing for it if it is better to surf instead. Thanks ;)

He's dead right. It's your fitness, your joints and your mindset. BUT, what it really is, the pros have the resources to surf good waves, all day, every day, on a massive selection of different surfboards. This is key. When you're down at your local and the surf is perpetually crap and tiny, it's very hard to paddle out on your one surfboard and perform all the time. The younger guys are better because they are so keen, they all want their photo taken, and they are LIGHT. The crap waves will carry them, whereas heavier guys will struggle. Finally, this vlog guy seems to have lifted Kelly vids himself and made his own video out of them? That's not on and be careful of copyright.

I always like to pop a handful of juicy fruits prior to paddling out to avoid the dreaded bad breath control

kelly is the goat but I think you can do better... I don't think you really articulated anything all that helpful. you repeated his words without actually contextualizing or expanding on what he was really saying.. in some ways, I think you diminished his points. I do hope this was helpful for people, but to me, it felt like a complete oversight.
