To be honest I don’t care about short form content trends in general (most of them are regurgitated info in my opinion) but de-influencing just makes my eyes roll back in my head. So many people get mad at the creator when the company that hired her to make the video has equal (if not more) responsibility in the manufactured drama. I so agree with you re: why does L'Oreal not get more of the blame? I'm coming from a PR background, and there is no universe that I can imagine in which L'Oreal let an influencer with such a wide reach put up a TikTok that was bound to be controversial without approval. And I mean: look at the attention that the product got! Meaning: that was planned happenstance in my opinion.
@alexandrrra5627 Жыл бұрын
I have a theory - no one cares to blame L'Oreal because there's no parasocial relationship built up, sending them hate is like yelling into the void. Makayla is a person, her life is out there for everyone to relate to so I think a lot of her subscribers feel lied to as opposed to it's pretty expected behavior from the huge multimillion $ brand.
@Fiercely_Nic Жыл бұрын
@@alexandrrra5627 I think that's pretty spot on! Plus, Mikayla appears very relatable and 'one of us', speaking pretty openly about her life and struggles, so it's easy to build a parasocial relationship with her.

Nice thing about hair - it always grows back. I think your hair is beautiful. Now I wish mine was long again 🤣

I appreciate your complex approach to discussing “de-influencing.” Imo, if one is using their platform to share their opinion on a product or process, it is influencing-whether a positive, negative, or mixed review. Suggesting that someone could pass on a product, or that it would only be successful for certain types of users (e.g., dry/oily/combo skin), is still an attempt to influence a decision.

I appreciate your view on de-influencing, and I agree. I believe the reason Mikayla got the blunt of the negative feedback is because people trust her, they view her as a friend, where as L'Oreal is just a company. If that makes sense. Also, I assume that it's easier for some creators to put the blame on her than it would be to put the blame on L'Oreal due to contracts. ? L'Oreal is just as, if not more so, guilty of being deceptive. Don't cut your hair. ;)

I think one reason why people are not being as harsh on L’Oréal as Mikayla is because L’Oréal has a really good and long reputation in the beauty industry. They have been in business for I don’t even know how long and they have a ton of products people love. Whereas Mikayla is a pretty new influencer who has had controversy way before this scandal with the mascara even happened. De-influencing rephrased is just personal opinions on popular products. So agree that it turned into negative reviews of best sellers with recommending substitutes which is again, influencing lol Also, I think mindful consumption is nearly impossible on TikTok because of the length of content and algorithm. FWIW, I don’t have TikTok so I don’t know much, if anything, about Mikayla. But I can say that it is possible to have a mascara make your natural lashes look like false lashes. Mine do. I’m being completely honest. I have naturally thick and long lashes, but they are light brown lashes & without mascara, they look like nothing special. When I add a good mascara, they are thick and very long. Also, being truthful, drugstore mascara has never done this for me. And only a few high end mascaras will perform this well. But I am able to achieve it with only my lashes and mascara (no primer, either). Again, I don’t know anything about Mikayla. Maybe she really does have short, thin lashes. 🤷♀️
