Let this be a lesson -- just go with Home Depot next time. LOL! As a life long New Yorker, we already know not to install an AC in the fire escape window. But how were you supposed to know? I'm surprised you didn't get this in the documentation when you moved in, especially for how much you're paying. I moved into a $1,000 studio in the South Bronx a few years back, and even they (management) had a leaflet telling me what I was and was not allowed to do in the apartment. Installing an AC blocking the fire escape was on that list of DO NOT DO's. However -- so long as you deal only with your building's handyman from now on, you should be ok. I would get on good terms with him straight away since you don't have any reliable guy friends. Be safe out there -- and good luck!

But then again, it works vice versa: I now live in the suburbs and don’t know how to survive out here (used to doing thing on my own rather than delegating or knowing how to maintain a whole house rather than a simple apartment like lawn maintenance, everything is more expensive because there’s less competition, places closing on Sundays instead of open 24/7, having to drive everywhere, etc). I’m more scared to be out here alone at night (no street lamps or consistent sidewalk paving, woods, no other human for miles) than NYC streets (street lamps, side walk, signs of life because people everywhere, etc).

Never place a A/C in a fire escape window, 1 it,s easy to push in and rob you 2 how the heck are you going to get out if there was a fire.

LOL Kelly ! Sorry to be laughing at your traumatic and wonderfully story. It was great. Glad you are alive to keep sharing your journeys. More funny from a technical side is that at no time did anyone ask the cubic volume of your apartment - typically required to select the proper ac unit.

Girl, next time just go to Home Depot & spend the $. You're a Single, young female in NYC. Not worth your safety, time or energy. That, or get a referral from someone you know in the city.

I've experienced many robbery situations (including a robbery with a weapon). These are stressful situations. I'm glad that you're okay (as far as "okay" can have any meaning), stay safe!

I'm so sorry Kelly. I relate to that bit about feeling furious and scared and everything and just wanting it all to be over. Scammers like this rely on the fear and anxiety that will cloud your mind. They create a situation where you will pay SOMETHING just to avoid what you think MIGHT happen. Wish I could give you a hug 🥺 ...but it's too hot out for that lol 😂 P.S. You did NOT say at the end "I rather get a lil crispy..." I HOLLERED!

Despite having a voice that sounded like an English schoolbook language, Kelly's Italian dialect didn't come in handy when she got scammed by that supposed handyman.
