I've thought about making a digital "Artist Calendar" that artists can use to plan submissions to upcoming shows, application deadlines, merch drops or track progress on a current project. I think having stickers with labels or little icons as visual reminders would be cute and useful if people want to print it out.

I love buying postcards from other artists because I basically treat them like affordable mini prints. This is especially nice at a festival where I can't afford to buy larger prints but want something from the artists I like. Postcard "mini prints" also allow me to hang more art on my walls without running out of space.

I was so confused when she said postcards were out of date. I love them! They're the perfect sized print, I put them on my wall, in my scrapbook, just to *look* 👁👁 I have bought like 50 postcards in my life ever since I was a kid (I have so many cheetah postcards its insane). And I have used them as actual postcards 3 times in my life and I got those ones specifically as presents for family, no need to attach a birthday card, the card is also the gift. No wrapping needed either.

I love art print silk scarves. They are usually way cheaper than something high-end like a Gucci scarf but way more unique and still luxurious. I wish more artists did these. I use them for hair scarves and it makes me feel like a queen. FYI, matte or low sheen silk looks more chic than satin which can look fake/cheap.

One thing that I really love about the online small business community is just how HELPFUL everyone is. It is so foreign to me as someone who has worked in retail and is trying to start my own business selling my art before retail makes me insane. I cannot believe just how much information people willingly and freely give actually HOPING that your shop does well and you are successful. In retail everything is cut throat, every man for himself. There's no positivity. Meanwhile I start researching how to starts my own arts and crafts business and I find that people are so warm and welcoming and will literally give ideas for free without a thought in the world that they're giving ideas to competition. It's so nice. It's so anti-capitalist, which is wild considering creating your own business is very much so part of the capitalist ideal. It's beautiful. I love it. Thank you so much for this video and your positivity.

I personally am starting to sell scans of my sketchbook when I release sketchbook tour videos!! That would be something I would recommend people to try, so that way those who want to see everything up close can!! ^^ I also charge a pay what you want option with a minimum of $5, so if someone wants to pay more they definitely can! Just something to look into!

Especially if your target demographic is younger ppl (say, college students,) I can't overstate the usefulness of postcard-sized prints. I was selling postcard size prints for pretty cheap recently at a charity art sale we held at my college, and I was one of the biggest sellers because of those small prints. For people with not a lot of disposable income, smaller prints can be a great way to buy art affordably.

Another idea is deck boxes! Magic (the gathering) cards are usually double-sleeved and taken extremely well care of, so people will spend a ton of money on deck boxes to either protect the cards (as a baseline) or to match the deck's theme. A lot on Etsy are 3D-printed that I've seen but I've also seen people do deckboxes sculpted like a hobbit house, a mushroom, or even painted with designs on top (or with details glued on boxes). Just another suggestion!

I would love a video about where to source some of these physical products, whether a prjnton demand situation or finding a manufacturer. For instance, i would love to offer socks and some of these other products mentioned, but wouldnt know where to start in terms of finding a manufacturer or the vehicle from which i would execute these ideas. Love your videos, they are so incredibly helpful, I especially love seeing your own art while talking art biz and seeing that you are a growing artist yourself and not one of these POD gurus who say to use stock images in Canva or make 6 figures in a year. Your growth is real and organic and you share lessons learned along the way and i appreciate that!

I had the idea the other day of offering printed cloth book covers or book bags. I don't know about anyone else, but paperback books don't survive long riding around in my bag. I've had to replace borrowed books a couple of times bcs my bag just shreds them. A nice cloth bag with a flap closure and maybe a bit of velcro would be great for that.

Giclée prints are a must for artists. The colors are night and day and is so well replicated to the original artwork (with a good scanned image) and it looks more premium than a standard print. Like she said, hand embellishing is an option, but you can also sign your print for a nice personal touch. If that’s too much work for you, just add a digital signature so it can be printed on paper. Nonetheless, I highly recommend getting high resolution scans of your artwork before considering any reproductions. If the digital file isn’t high quality in the first place, you shouldn’t expect your prints to look great.

What file size and resolution would you consider a good quality scan?
@k_moov3

@@sofiaspeakman8086 the file size can vary depending on the image size, but typically 300dpi is the image resolution you should aim for. 250 dpi minimum. As long as the image is 300dpi at the desired print size, the details will be crisp

I enjoyed this video and will probably figure some things out of this but I need to add my 2 cents as a self employed artist myself after 10+ years being active. MOST of the things you mentionned I tried and it didn't work. I didn't sold much or nothing, they have CRAZY first costs if you want quality and none of those products will ever make a sustainable income if you A/Don't have the following B/Don't have the right design for it or your audience doesn't like those products and C/Don't have engagement because all the algorythms are blocking your posts Yes I'm bitter and I'm talking about personnal experience, I tried to improve, upgrade, develop my offer as an artist but a lot of my attempts didn't work and over the last months my engagement just went lower and lower and nobody sees my content. A great product is NOTHING if nobody sees it or wants it or if the art isn't good enough or popular enough or fitting with trends. Most of the suggested items are very pricey to produce and hard to stock if you have multiple designs. I feel like digital content might be slightly better and easier to implement but I'm just not on board trying new physical products that will eventually never be seen or bought. I like creating, I'm making new artworks with the intention to seel an artbook and originals but I don't have much more to invest in terms of actual products costs, it's rather impossible atm. How you would do things ? if you have any tips for me ? thanks

I have a similar question. The ideas sound great in theory but average people don't obsess over these products. Artistic people love to buy artistic products, but the average person really is content with prints from Ross, Kohl's and Wal-Mart, etc... The difficulty with an artist is that we have to prove to the general customer why they should buy our painting or sculpture.

I'm a writer and I find zines to be the absolute perfect product! I'm working on my first one, it's actually gonna come out in a few days. I like to print them at home and I do all the shipping and packaging myself because that allows me for maximum freedom (compared to amazon KDP for example, which doesn't allow images from the internet... i wanna put memes in my zines damnit!). For my fellow artists who are learning how to draw I think this would be a great ideas, I love zines and I want to see more of them!

This is a really good list to find. I know this is a prompt for me to start looking into a few of the options that interest me, though I feel a lot of fear with not knowing how to do much of any of these without print on demand except for the ones said to go to thrift stores or make a mold with silicone or resin. So hopefully I'll find something to teach me some more of this in this week

Something I've seen not so long ago is blocks of clear acrylic with artwork on the back of it that you can see through the acrylic. It's an interesting way to display the piece, but particularly I've seen some people manage to make them have art on the front of the block too, giving it a multilayered look to it and it's really neat. Alas I can't find how to make those myself but it's interesting. There's also lamps that shines light through an upright standing clear plastic, resin, or acrylic with designs engraved in them. And acrylic standees!! They're fun, as well as dioramas if you really want to flesh out a scene inside it. Clay is also good to make little figures. I don't have clay so I shape kitchen foil and cover it with paper mache and paint it. A bit more difficult than clay but I like it. :)

I just came across your channel for the first time, & I have to absolutely thank you for all the amazing ideas. ESPECIALLY THOSE BLANKETS!!! I have been procrastinating for some time on setting up my online shops. Been an artist all my life & study holistic medicine. But back in the 90s those careers were NOT acceptable!!! Now going to school for holistic medicine, & still creating art daily. I am not that great at all this computer stuff. Tho a graphic artist in the 90s ..... 💯 different now. So I have yet to set up shop. I can easily create everything you spoke about & SOO much more. I think today may be the day!!! I'm gonna set my first shop up!!! Adding - tarot decks may be more ambitious esp cuz they require specific symbolism or obvious visuals to determine the card they are however for those of us more free flowing with our art and intuitive expression - oracle cards differ from tarot in the way that they do NOT require a specific structural set up - make what you want, as many as you want, find your interpretation to them and your guidebook maybe a some spread suggestions then you have your deck and book to release

You could try local or online print shops. Some of them offer a wide range of products printed with your own designs. If they provide an express service and/or will produce small quantities you could use them for print on demand, or just buy small quantities of inventory for a cheaper price if you're not going to customise every single item.

A bonus idea for #4 Stickers and something I've been excited to make designs are like.. okay you know those tall solid color pillar candles in glass at bodegas or the candle section of a dollar store? You could try making a label sticker for them. Could be silly ones or good luck, good fortune kinds, or specific color scheme art for folks who match. Anyway I think there's a lot to have fun with for candle labels.

Do you know where to get a calendar print where you can keep the art print afterwards? I think that's brilliant!

Do you do art licensing before putting your products out there? If not, how do you deal with copyright issues and potential art theft?? Been binging your videos and honestly you made me rediscover my lost ambition towards art as a career ❤

Just saw this video and I guess I’m always shocked when I see Mothman references outside of my home state of West Virginia. I ABSOLUTELY love it!!! Have you ever been to the Mothman Museum? Anyway, love your videos and feel motivated after watching them. It’s just that implementation phase 😂 If you make that trip to WV to the Mothman Museum, would love to meet up for coffee. Nope, not weird. We are just THAT friendly in this beautiful mountain state. Keep up the great work my friend! ❤

Sticker books used by people who use planners cost around $20 each and they are not difficult to design because some of the stickers are just boxes in different colors. Problem is that I don’t know where to get sticker books printed. Anyone out there know where to get sticker books printed?

My idea for custom art stickers is to make my own paint by sticker designs where all the stickers are numbered and correlate with their proper spot on the page and they all form together one original art piece or photo of my choice. I also wanted to figure out how to design, print, and add jewels to stickers that have a sticky layer on the front to stick tiny jewels and reflective shapes in a lovely pattern. Both ideas are not original, besides making them custom into my own designs, and I wanted to make them really easy, fun, and relaxing to assemble because some of the sticker mosaics and jeweled sticker designs can be a bit stressful and less relaxing during assembly depending on how they are set up to be put together.

I don't think you mentioned makeup cases but I thought of those when you mentioned pencil cases. (Oh, and brooch doesn't have an "a" in it - unless you are broaching the subject of brooches. 🙂) Good job as usual, Kelsey! You answered a question I had in bed last night - does anybody send postcards any more? Can you buy them? I love the idea of postcard size art - inexpensive to collect the art of artists you love.

oh geez prob not any of the major ones, maybe search for a smaller local shop in a metro area (NYC, Chicago, LA) that has lots of print options and a drop-ship service?

@@KelseyRodriguez is not a bad idea, but I don't live in the US so investigating city by city would be... eternal.. 😅 Will continue to keep an eye out and pray to the gods that Printful or one of the others one day find the way to add this to their catalogs. Thank you for getting back!
