OMG! I have tears in my eyes! I've been researching this topic for literally A YEAR. You're the first person I've seen speaking directly, naming names directly, commenting on your opinions directly. It's almost like selling art is forbidden. Artists only talk about raising their name and brand, getting attention at all costs. I understand that as an artist the best way is to create a name and a brand and a website and stuff. But what about someone who's just starting out and needs money!? Anyway, thank you!

Ahh I'm so so glad it has been useful! It would always frustrate me as well that no one talks about this stuff !!

@@caitlinoliviaart If I may make a suggestion: DO MORE! There are more videos criticizing all the art sales platforms than there are videos giving real constructive ideas. I think it's terrible that this subject is always approached in the sense of "are you an artist? You can sell your works for thousands of dollars" OR "are you an artist? GIVE UP"

I recommend to get some very thin plywood 3mm and cut it slightly larger than the painting - put it on either side of the painting in between the acid free paper layer and the bubble wrap layer. It’s the most secure way to do it and how museums do it.

This is super helpful! Thanks so much! Also, I'm not sure if its a thing in other countries, but at least in the US, it's recommended to register copyright of original works with the gov. copyright office
@caitlinoliviaartАй бұрын
Oh I see! I think most countries recognize a copyright on your work as soon as it is created so I didn't realise you actually have to register it in the US. Thanks for letting everyone know!

@caitlinoliviaart In the US it's also recognized as copyrighted as soon as it is created, however registering it is an extra step for legality purposes, especially if it is for commercial use. But I'm no legal expert lol thanks again for your awesome video 👏

Such a great video! There are a few things that I do like you. But lots of extra info to improve how I approach selling my work. I have often thought of my pricing strategy being length x width but always though that it would be too high and would frighten people off but 1.25 is very reasonable. Also you are extremely talented, your work is beautiful.

This is so helpful, thank you!! But whenever I watch a video about selling artwork, there is one thing missing: I was so happy you talked about shipping, but no one ever mentions shipping fees? :( Do I pay those myself? Does the customer pay them? What if they are really high? I‘m really hoping to get some advice on this at some point :‘)
@caitlinoliviaartАй бұрын
Hey thanks for asking! I completely forgot to mention this in the video. On my website shop I have free postage just because it's easier as every painting will cost different prices to ship. If you do this just make sure you add onto the price of the painting roughly what the postage will cost. For commissions I always mention upfront that the buyer covers postage costs and import fees. If you're not sure about what the fees will be then you can ask for the clients address and estimate the weight to be able to give them a rough quote. My average painting costs around £500 so I'll use that as an example for shipping cost: Once packaged it weighs around 2.5kg ~ shipping to the UK costs around £30 and worldwide can be between £50-80. Price can increase with heavier package weight and increased painting cost. Hope this helps!

I started selling around 4 years ago and yes don't worry it's completely normal to not get any sales on instagram to start with! - I had my account for 2 years before I got my first sale 4 years ago. Etsy was marketed as this place for creatives and handmade goods. However, nowadays is plaged with these type of people who use print on demand services but have 0 love for the craft. Such as: baby clothes with a silly drawing made either by themselves in half an hour or IA. I am so sorry you had to deal with finding out the hard way leaving money to the platform for your listings. I know for me, I did a lot of research before anything and I found out in the theoric way.
@caitlinoliviaartАй бұрын
So true! I mentioned this exact thing in an email that went out a few days ago - Etsy has just turned into a cesspool of money hungry talentless people just trying to make a quick buck. Its such a shame. All of the dropshippers have taken over the platform. But what is more frustrating is that Etsy doesn't regulate the sale of AI work at all! It's definitely going downhill unfortunately :( Good on you for researching first!

Deeper dive on the codes and how that works because idk how that works also i like the per square inch wxhx1.50.
@caitlinoliviaart2 ай бұрын
The tariff codes, which are also called HS codes, are written on the customs forms in a designated slot. They're universal for all countries that use the HS system but you only need to include them when you are shipping to another country. The codes you use differ between what you are shipping - so a painting will have a different code to a print or a piece of pottery. They're there to let customs know what it is you are shipping and what category it comes under. Hopefully that clears things up a little! The best thing to do is to look it up on your government site and you will be able to search for specific codes
