Ken Burg performs the song "Always Almost Maybe", from an unreleased demo recording made in 2013. The song was written by Kerry Mooney, Whil Harlin and Ken Burg.

The video you see here is a photo slideshow I made in response to Facebook's automatically generated videos (the very first one) that folks were sharing awhile back. I didn't care for the video slideshow that Facebook created for me, nor the music, so I made my own video using my own soundtrack.
The soundtrack is a demo recording I made in 2013 of a song written by Kerry Mooney, Whil Harlin and myself, called "Always Almost Maybe". The vocals are not fantastic, this is just a rough demo, but you get a good idea of the song.
The song began life as a tune Kerry Mooney and I were working on around 1984-85, called "Another Day, Another Dollar", after our short-lived band, Medium Rare, had broken up. The song was never finished, and the lyrics were long forgotten. One day in the summer of 2007, I played the chords for Whil Harlin, and he wrote the lyrics to this song, which is when it became "Always Almost Maybe".
I began recording this demo in 2012. My acoustic guitar, vocals and electric guitar were recorded at my home studio in Clovis, CA. I had been in contact with Kerry Mooney, had talked about the song, and he had agreed to help me with the recording. But suddenly and unexpectedly, Kerry passed away in November, 2012. The inspiration to finish the recording became an act of memorial to Kerry. I scheduled a trip to Southern California to recruit the aid of some friends and family.
The remaining tracks were all recorded during the same week in February, 2013, but at different locations as I traveled with my 16-track digital recorder. Brett Scott's bass tracks were recorded in his band's studio in Costa Mesa, CA. A couple days later, Corey Ciota's drum tracks and Buddy Donner's lead guitar tracks were recorded at the rehearsal studio of their band, Great Electric Quest, in Oceanside, CA. Bill Sharplin's lead guitar tracks were recorded over the next 2 days at Bill's house in Vista, CA.
As producer, I am thrilled with how good the guitars worked together! Bill captured the feel thru the whole song, adding flavor to my rhythmic tracks. Buddy's main solo is superb!
While this video is shamelessly all about me, basically a slideshow of just about every picture I have of myself, the song itself is part of an album, Songs of the Moonman, which I produced, dedicated to the memory of Kerry Mooney. I did not intend to release this particular recording of this song to the public, it's just a rough demo. It just happened to be the best example of me singing and playing that I had laying around to use as a soundtrack for this silly video, which was primarily done as a response to Facebook assembling a horrible video slideshow of my photos.
I think it's a pretty cool tune. If you were to ask me the meaning of the lyrics, I would say that you'd have to ask Whil, but the meaning I get is the description of a woman who is full of controversy and conflicts of interest: "What she doesn't is what she was. And what she wasn't is what she does..."
I had intended to re-record the vocals with better ones, but unfortunately, that never quite happened. I was actually working on this song some 10 years later, and that is when the hard drive in my digital recorder bit the big one, and I lost all of the master tracks from my machine. I was never very good about backing up my work, so this is the only version there is unless I record a whole new one, which I intend to do in the near future a part of my first "official" album release. That's the plan, anyways. Remain calm, and please stay tuned...
