Anyone notice Ken Burns complete omission of jazz guitar in this series? It makes me wonder if Mr. Burns ever listened to Wes Montgomery.
@mattlandonmusic3 жыл бұрын
It could’ve been because of Wynton’s input, too. I’ve heard that Wynton believed, especially when he was younger, that guitar was not a legitimate jazz instrument.

They did actually do a segment on Django Reinhardt, but it was fairly short.

I’ve only seen snippets of this series I’m saving up to buy it but that makes me sad. I’ve always felt that Jazz guitar was very important to the development of rock and roll even more so than honky Tonk guitar playing and delta blues. Jazz guitar in my opinion seems to have a greater connection to rock and roll than Robert Johnson like so many claim. So it’s unfortunate it’s not heavily featured in this series

The fact they spend one episode on 40 years of jazz history and 9 on the previous 60 was ridiculous. Jazz fusion was practically swept under the rug
@the16thGemini4 жыл бұрын
With creative influence from Wynton Marsalis, the documentary is going to be more of an purist view of jazz. Even more so with jazz critics like the late Stanley Crotch and Nat Hentoff. Still a great documentary.
@GendunCh3 жыл бұрын
I think that's more or less the conventional wisdom on the show. Burns also tends to treat bebop in the narration like it's some kind of renegade outgrowth from the real jazz, which is apparently Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington. They showed nearly as many pictures of signs in bebop joints saying "No Dancing Allowed!" as they showed stock footage clips of World War II. Personally I think their whole take is pretty square, and a bit bizarre, and hasn't generally aged well.
@jamisonescott23002 жыл бұрын
I agree. Not to diminish the importance of Louis Armstrong to the history of jazz, but I can tell that Ken Burns is a huge fan. It seems like Armstrong was as important to jazz as Abraham Lincoln was to the Civil War.

"Fusion being new?" Are you joking? Bitch's Brew is more than 50 years old.
@malaquiasalfaro812 жыл бұрын
I can’t get into jazz fusion, just based off of my taste it seems like a separate entity. Like gospel hip hop. Only roughly related to gospel music at best.😅

I understand that Jazz is American, but it cannot truthfully be said it's the only American creation. Blues was too, and it gave birth to Rock N Roll but with no Blues, there is no Jazz.
@taowaycamino48917 жыл бұрын
I agree. No Blues, then no Jazz or Rock N Roll either. No God, then no evil/suffering either....but that's part of long story.
@bobbye.wright44246 жыл бұрын
Patrick B i dont disagree with you chris jazz and blues both grew simultaneously they are intertwined jazz however springed from african drumbeats from west africa and the congo basin region transplanted by enslaved africans were as blues originated from african enslaved peoples interpretation of christian hymns

I'm only gonna say this once... Jazz is NOT the story of advanced harmony. Jazz is the story of Sex, Drugs, Love, Vice, Virtue, Darkness, the Light, Honesty, Lies, Discovery AND Ignorance, and the limits of Humanity. If you can't come to terms with THIS, you can't play jazz.
