Only ever been to France in my lifetime and that was when the aircraft I was flying to Germany had to divert due to engine problems, so had to sit on the taxiway while it got fixed. That was circa 1968 and I was a member of the ATC (Air Training Corps) young men in RAF uniforms.

Priority on the right does work well once understood, it generally stops vehicles speeding in town and allows vehicles from side roads continuity without waiting for a vehicle to give way, which in England can take ages.

23:03 that sign gives you right of way for the upcoming crossroads. Priority on the right & many pedestrian crossings are actually designed to slow traffic down, it is usually close to shopping areas or living quarters and it works quite well. What you perceive as a nouance is actually the outcome of what it is designed for. I would recommend to adapt and respect different customs in foreign countries. In inner cities drivers should take care on pedestrians, as they are inferior when an accident happens.

Hi Ken, great video. Regarding priority right. I’ve live in France and now Germany for a good few years and understand your frustration with this especially in french cities. However if you look towards the end of your vlog just before you turn left there is a sign post displaying a yellow square on it’s side. This means you have right of way, no priority to the right. That is until you see the same sign with a diagonal line through it. Safe driving!

Me, too. I'm really disappointed at how much French I have forgotten. At one point it was my best subject. We had an exchange student here from France about 15 years ago. It's a good thing her English was pretty good, because my French was dreadful.. I could remember words here and there, but couldn't put a sentence together.

A Canadian here too. Giving way to traffic coming from the right (at uncontrolled intersections) works a treat when you get used to it. I think you do great driving in France when you are used to the UK. Don’t stress Ken. Nobody is more cautious than you.

We have a lot of the roads where I live like this, and in the villages. On your video the white bollards with red stripe show those junctions on the small road have priority. Also signs which look like a crossroad sign.. that's on an approach to a priority road. Search for the subject on the Internet, it might help.

Your rant made me laugh, it’s not really a stupid thing, just different and you have to get your UK brain around it. It catches out British and French and other nationalities alike at times when it’s not wholly obvious. When you stay somewhere for a certain time you do get to know where the priorities are😊in that town, village, etc. As you mentioned, keep an eye on the junction, no white lines means very likely Priorité. The vicious speed bumps make sure everyone slows down to the 30km limit which is where these always are. Mostly folks here in France obey the speed limit unless its the 90km limit or the 130km on an autoroute 😮. To be honest, when I come back to drive in the UK I appreciate the French roads more and more and can’t wait to get back to hassle free driving on my return. Great video again.

We love how quiet the roads are in rural France and rarely got stuck in any traffic jams. The accident rate must be a lot lower with everyone driving so slowly in the towns and I think it makes the traffic flow better 🙂

UK can be weird too. UK roundabouts in North Devon and near Folkestone were confusing. Some steep roads I had to take in first gear with my Fiat Panda. We were crawling to the top. Bloody hedges! you cannot see what comes around the bend in a left hand driven car. 😂 still we loved our 2019 UK holidays

My daughter in law brought me pineapples to do something with. She found a great buy on them, so I thought a good way to preserve them was to dehydrate them. They turn out like pineapple candy. What I did with one batch was marinade it in my homemade vanilla rum and dehydrate it for the grandsons. OMG! Yummm

We do the same in Finland and it makes perfect sense. Paying attention at every junction slows you down, instead of just barrelling along always assuming you have right of way. It makes you a safer more defensive driver. We have even more pedestrian crossings here. After living in the UK and NZ for most of my life, Finland is a civilised pedestrian, cycling and driving heaven. Cycling in NZ was hell, and driving and cycling in the UK not much better.

24:00 Priorité a Droite is because horses will naturally give way to horses coming from the side. In England we started putting blinkers on horses for other reasons but it altered traffic flows so when traffic management started to appear each country just channelled existing practices. This was long before the horseless carriage was invented & either system still made sense.

I totally agree with you about "priorite a droite" . I have rarely had anyone expect me to give way to them when I'm on what I consider to be the major road. So many side roads now have give way or stop markings. However, on a recent trip a couple of weeks ago, a vehicle slowly edged out of a side road, presumably seeing what I would do. To say he wasn't happy as I drove through and past him, would be putting it mildly. And don't get me started on the variety of speed limits.

Yes you have to be really careful as there speed cameras are well hidden. Norway has some of the lowest speed restrictions we have seen yet.

You cannot get married in church in France, it has to be a civil ceremony in the town hall, usually on a Friday. Party Friday night into Saturday with all your friends and guests and then have a blessing in church on a Sunday. The church blessing is very low key with just family members.

Ken I fully agree with you on the priority a droite and pedestrian crossings ..Very dangerous every 50m in some towns .. Particularly at roundabouts.. They drive like crazy on roundabouts and then you can have a ped. crossing just at the exit when you are expected to brake suddenly!!!

Sorry Ken. In GB there are also rules to decide which vehicle must yield the right of way. It is the same as in the rest of Europe except that the vehicle coming form the left should yield the right of way. That is however not a rule that is not well known among drivers, motorcyclists and cyclist in GB. To compensate for that lack of knowledge the road authorities have put up traffic signs in every road crossing. Then the only challenge is cyclists and pub crawlers. Here is the rule: How do you know which car has the right of way? If you reach an uncontrolled intersection at close to the same time, the vehicle who actually reached the intersection last is the driver who must yield the right of way. If you reach the intersection at the same time, the driver on the left should yield the right of way.

Great drone shots. We have some of those give way to the right roads here in the Netherlands and I think they are so dangerous. You can be driving along and suddenly someone just barges out without looking. The way to tell is if there are no white lines on the side road then be very careful. They also keep changing speed limits on the motorways here just to catch people out. I envy the size of your little van where you can go anywhere, sometimes wish I’d bought a smaller van (mines 7.5 meters long).

DJI Mini 2. Driving shots 3 ways. 1. Stand out of shot and film with manual control. 2. Fly from passenger seat manual control. 3. Fly from passenger seat and use an app called Dronelink which can track the gps in your phone. This can also allow a combination of manual and automatic flight. As for a video camera stuff does not do well on the channel. 👍. The method I end up using depends on the law wherever I am.

I've never been to Europe but don't think I could adjust to driving on the left (after 58 years on the right). Do you have any problem switching? The language barrier would be a problem too. I like the way your iPad makes a real nice GPS readout on your dash! You must have it very well secured. Thanks for all the great videos. I'm amazed at how high and far your drone flies.

Did you notice the Roman soldier, wearing socks and sandals? Its not wimpy at all! I have to say, you eat very well on your travels. Another weird, and I think dangerous aspect in France, are the pedestrian crossing immediately on the exit to roundabouts. You may have to stop before you have even exited the roundabout.

Getting on and off the train is easy. Keep some distance between you and the vehicle in front otherwise you might have to reverse back to clear the doors between carriages. Signage is good on French roads.

I'm a Brit living in France and noticed with many Brits who drive here and even live here, They make the common mistake that when turning around they drive clockwise, So move to the left and then it throws them on the left side, I once attended a major accident because of this, The driver pulled off the road did a clockwise turn which then put him on the left side of the road he was then hit by a on coming car driving down the right, The next issue is when they come to a junction they always look right first, then left, Sometimes that looking right first means they think the road is clear and push out a little this then could mean the difference between an on coming car on the right hitting them. I have driven on the right most of my life, but passed my test in the UK and I have even done this in the UK the other way around ie looked to the right first in the Uk when I should look left, I was nearly hit by a car coming from the left. I'm guessing you could ignore these small points 10,000 times or more and get away with it and maybe that is why many don't think about it, What do you think? Also I'm sure you guys know of the ‘priorité à droite" sign? you will see them coming into to most towns with a black line throw them and then on major road without the black line. again most Brits don't know what they mean as they don't have anything similar in the UK or the rest of Europe in fact.

I normally enjoy driving and once you are out in the countryside or on a motorway its all fine. We prefer to go on the quieter roads though and that takes you through all the villages and towns. When its busy there is so much to think about and it can be stressful for all the reasons you give. We are in Norway at the moment. In the towns they have crossroad junctions with just pedestrian crossing markings on each road. I still have not worked out what you are supposed to do. I thought it was lime the USA, whoever arrives first has right of way but I have seen several break that rule.

Yes seen them. The terror is caused by some streets having priority and others not. This means driving slower than normal and scrutinising road markings for every junction.

Hi to you both. I have lived in Germany since 2001 and they have the same stupid rule of giving way to roads from the right. It makes absolutely no sense and I have never understood who thought it was a good idea.

Firstly it is designed to slow down traffic, one will find it in residential areas where one should anyway drive slowly and paying more attention. Secondly it is great regarding the costs, as there are no signs or lines on the road needed or to maintain. Lastly Germans and other countries on the continent do find that a very good idea and one should respect foreign customs when visiting their country, sometimes reconsider and maybe learn from it, for example France and Germany are recently putting up many roundabouts, but I guess only single lane roundabouts work here ;)

@@camperlustig68 I am sorry, that was another guy writing about yellow and white signs, not me. Fact is at every crossing where there is no line and no sign is there the priority for the right car is valid, therefore it does not need signs, money saved.

@@camperlustig68 again, I can repeat it ever so often: there are crossroads with none, rien, nada signs whatsoever, no lines on the ground that does mean the car to your right has the right of way, if you agree or not that is fact. I ps I did not write about a yellow on whatever backround sign, that actually was another guy

I do not understand the logic either. Just put a DAMN yield sign there. They have yield signs 50 meters from a STOP sign to let you know you are approaching a STOP sign but when a real tiny lane joins the NATIONAL road from the right, THERE IS NO SIGN at all and a car can just turn into the national road without you even realizing there is a road coming in from the right. I find it stupid and dangerous. I agree with you Ken. Great videos thanks.

I left a ridiculously long message about driving over the speed limit for a short(ish) distance many years ago that started explaining some yield and stop sign rule in the US. After posting, I realized that such a comment might lead to a traffic citation, not knowing the statute of limitations for moving violations. So I deleted it. It was not very interesting, anyway.

I've lived in France for almost 20yrs and I've got to say the priorité à droite drives me crazy. Even though they are supposed to be doing away with it my local village has just created two new ones where they didn't exist before!
