Im surprised to here K Schrader's take on current NASCAR being so positive. The 90's was the greatest era as far as entertainment and talent on the track, in my opinion. The racing is okay today, but the iconic cars of the 90's, the personalities of the drivers.... It was an awesome time. There are few modern day drivers that I can really say draw me in to want to root for them as a fan. It is what it is, I still like to watch the race on sunday's.

Couldn't agree more, I think big sponsors leaving and lack of marketing upcoming talent really hurt Nascar recently. I used to always watch the Busch Series bc there was always a group of young drivers coming up. Now you got one or two guys who do well and the rest are kinda scattered around.

I think the biggest change in Nascar and sports in general, is social media. Back in the day, Drivers were kind of like movie stars or rock stars. We idolized them. We didn't really know them personally and only knew what tv showed us. I think that plays a big part in people remembering the past as the good old days. We now see they're just like us and deal with same issues we do. That has it's good sides and bad. I think drivers feel more pressure now, because the camera's on them 24/7 and the world seems to jump on the negative a lot more than the positives.

Ken Schrader is an icon. Guys like Kenny, Tony Stewart, Kyle Larson, etc. are true racers. Kenny hit the nail on the head; social media is destroying this country. And it’s not just NASCAR. It’s everything. My best Kenny Schrader story. Can’t remember the race; it was either Sonoma or Fontana. I was sitting in the DuPont hospitality tent and a young Jeff Gordon was addressing the group and I was sitting on the side of the tent. Kenny and Terry Labonte peaked in through the tent, in uniform, and started heckling the young Jeff from over my shoulder. It was hilarious!!!

I have never heard such honest and open comments from a race car driver. Kenny Schrader pulls no punches and tells it as it is. He is so right about nobody being happy or satisfied anymore. Shut up and drive the damn car; that's what you signed up for. And he is also right about it being NASCAR's show, and the teams must abide by their rules. I also like that he is in favor of stiffer and more numerous penalties. That is the only way for NASCAR to make its point. Keep interviewing the outspoken drivers, Herman, because it makes for great podcasts.

I do find it funny that the best stock car drivers in the country / world are related to the team owners or past drivers somehow. Also, a 100 million plus to run a so so nascar team for a season is insane. Stages, there should have never been cautions after the stage maybe some would have raced for the stage win while others would have stayed on the whole race strategy. The cautions made it 3 short races in one, races seem longer timewise overall with more TV commercials. Championship, is a team effort and the commitment of showing up to every race and getting the best overall finish average. One of these years because of the "Playoffs" you are going to see a driver/team get into it by let's say, a rain finish and either get deep into or win the championship knocking off fan fav's. That will not be pretty. At least nascar should acknowledge the best over all finisher for the year but they want no part of that old crap. Cars, I dont care who makes them but at least admit that they are nothing more than IROC cars with different stickers. Also carbon fiber cars dont bend and crease when you hit something or it hits you. They are like giant bumper cars but for the video game era, what do you expect. There used to be a time where saving your tires, motor, your car meant something. If you made it a 3 or 4 pit stop race or when / if would you make your charge to the front, all mattered. Today a yellow flag will come out before the mandatory yellow flag will, so you can set your car up real aggressive, take big risks and be super aggressive on the track with it from the green flag. I remember Tony Stewert and Mark Martin both saying, "these kids think they are playing a video game or something out here" (mainly talking about Joey and Brad). Now they have the rubber car to make it complete. Honestly anyone think Chastain would have been able to pull off his wall ride in a sheet metal car. The car would have been shredded and he would have slowed big time. I didnt leave nascar, they left me. But I still love ya Ken Schrader.

Great to see Kenny Schrader. And I 100% agree with everything Schrader said (by the way, Mark Martin seems to feel the same way too). I've been a fan of NASCAR since the early 80's and many fans then, and in the 90's and in the 2000's talked about the "good old days". There are things I miss about earlier times, but most of that has to do my experiance at the track as a fan. Overall the racing and compition is great. Sure I'd like to see better racing at the short tracks, but I sure they'll get it figured out.

Well said by Ken, about the abandoned tracks, we all wonder if Dale Sr, had some kind of lease deals on North Wilkesboro or Rockingham to keep the cup racing there it's a odd coincidence that has been talked about with the million of fan's around the table. But again it maybe not if Dale raced his final years we'll never know. This was a well said podcast Kenny.

Miss Kenny Schrader being around. I know Kenny Schrader could tell stories about racing for months and he would not have run out of true stories.. One thing Kenny Schrader won't ever say a word about is when he Lowered Dale Sr's window net. Kenny was first person in the world to know Dale Sr passed away but he is honorable man. Also Kenny tòok a shy Dale Jr with him on trips to racing outside of cup.

Schrader is so right. GREAT racing nowadays. I go and watch IndyCar, and I do not care for the direction they're going with their race control, the last 10 laps of the 500 were unfair, great racing throughout that race though. Looking at NASCAR they've gone the RIGHT direction. We've got more winners in the last year and a half in NASCAR than we've EVER had, more diverse track schedule since the 70s. They're going to Chicago this year, and while I'm unsure if this race will be good or not, but they got BALLS to try it! No one else wanted to go there for a race, and you know what, that's a huge market. Who knows. Maybe it will work out and it'll be an instant classic. NASCAR has done it all by the book and I love that. They've made the RIGHT calls both with how they're officiating everyone. It's more fair than it's ever been, and I think that's the way it should be. And everything in the race when it comes to their rules has been done right in the races. They follow that rulebook to a T. I'll tell you something else. I heard this from a guy who was a crew chief for a smaller team back in 2018. The route the top teams were on before the new car was not sustainable. They were gonna be out of money and bankrupt by end of this century at the latest if they continued to develop the Gen-6 cars, while the smaller teams like MBM and Rick Ware were going to survive because they weren't spending crazy amounts of money on their cars, but look at how far off the pace they were. They just got their first lead lap finish in the Coke 600 this year. 5 years ago they weren't even close to being one lap down. The fact that the next-gen car has brought the teams that were spending sensibly within reach of the teams that were spending over their heads is the best thing that's happened to this sport, ever.

I have not watched NASCAR in a few years but one thing that added drama or excitement was when the tires wore out and track position wasn’t as important as new tires. Or some cars would stay out and not pit but they had very little chance against new tires. When track position was everything made the races a lot less exciting.

I'm an older guy and I really don't mind the stage racing or points system. I do think there should be more than 1 race(Phoenix) to decide the championship. Make the championship a 4 race system between the final 4 drivers! Schedule is an issue for me, Brickyard 400 being a huge one. Bristol dirt🥱 bring back Daytona on July 4th weekend. I would add another Daytona race, have Daytona kickoff the playoffs! I would add another talladega race as well, those tracks get a big tv audience! But the racing is much better than it was 25 years ago for the most part. It makes me laugh when I hear people saying the racing is not good, they are stuck in the past. A lot of young talent in the sport, promotion and scheduling is the issue. Also, start the Daytona 500 before 2pm or by 2pm so we're not racing at night. Daytona 500 is not supposed to be a night race. I know that sounds petty, but it's the small details that can ruin a sport! Great interview Mr. Wallace👍

I saw Kenny Schrader at Rolla. Saw Dick Trickle leave the track at Rolla. I believe Larry Phillips beat you all. That was a long time ago. That was Cale Yarborough not Schrader. My bad. I've always found it hilarious when people say Nascar was better back in the day, or the nascar is so boring today. What was exciting about somebody winning a race by 5 to 12 laps. I will agree that the cars looked way way cooler back in the day than they do today. But like Shrader said, Nascar is not the one that screwed that up.

I wanted simply to "Like" your comment, but your statement applies across every issue and relationship. Not having ever had a Facebook, Instagram, Twitter account, I have not experienced that firsthand. Family and friends, however, have shown me posts and responses. I have only LinkedIn, which I hardly ever use now. Many with both accounts have told me it has become a "Facebook Lite." If you read comments on any "news" or "sports" site, you will see how true your statement rings. In addition, people now insert politics into every single aspect of life. This removes the shared enjoyment of events like racing and other sports with family and friends. It is nice to find someone who recognizes the primary source of infection for NASCAR and society generally. Enjoy the day with your friends and family! A beer 🍺 or drink of your choice on me!

Schrader is speaking the truth and it shouldn't be surprising to people. The racing in Nascar today is as good from a fan perspective as it's ever been but yet people still do nothing but complain about it. He also said a painful truth that people don't want to hear in that North Wilkesboro always put on lackluster races so it shouldn't be a shock that the All-Star race wasn't all that good either. People had this enormous hype about going back to North Wilkesboro because of the nostalgia and that alone but the reality is it's not a very good track for Nascar and it never was. Nobody should've been surprised that that race stunk. I'd have rather had Rockingham back before North Wilkesboro if anything. It's the culture today. It's just so hypercritical and negative over everything and it's ruining everything that once used to be enjoyable. That's why Nascar will never return to the heyday of the sport even though it could in its current state because the culture of people back then were so different and accepting. They'd embrace things like Nascar for what it was and accept it and make it so popular. Now, it's like everybody is an expert and critic and think they know better than everybody else even though most of these critics can't even drive a manual car or change the oil in their car. The culture of fans has ruined it mainly, but of course they'll never take the blame but instead blame it on everything else but themselves. No matter how a race plays out, they'll find something to complain about and then post it up on social media because they know the negative posts will attract the most attention and likes and that's all these people want. You get no attention when you're positive and it's easier to get sucked into that vortex of negativity like most other people. That's the problem with the current culture of the world in a nutshell. It's all backwards compared to how it used to be.

I love the part at the end because I've seen that stuff so many times. You get complaints about stage racing, the points system, and how they need to race literal stock cars as if that wouldn't be a logistical nightmare now. Stage racing doesn't really affect all that much in my opinion. I prefer the old points system, but I can't deny that the final race is much more dramatic now. But I watch individual races, so the championship standings are secondary for me. The current points system doesn't bother me. As for the new car, the negativity is interesting to me. Yes, the short track racing isn't as good. But super speedways are arguably better. Road races seem even better. Intermediates seem even better, perhaps the most improved. So there's work to be done, but there's the typical hyperbole in complaints. As for North Wilkesboro, I was glad to see it back. I enjoyed the All-Star Race. I understand it wasn't super exciting. But I enjoy races where cars can catch each other, but it's difficult to pass. The race had passing mid pack. Up front, the 5 car was easily the best car, got to the front early, and stayed there because it was the best car. Lack of cautions eliminated opportunities. That's racing, sometimes. I remember the spring 2018 Martinsville race, the one postponed by snow, and it was so cold that the tires held up better than usual and the race barely had any cautions. That's just how it goes.

I love Herm and Schrader, however i have to partially disagree although competition on track is spread more even = better racing in that sense . however back in the golden days a Smokey Yunick could hold his own with a team with much better financials.. with all these issued parts the box means u must have equal $.. and smokey would have never been.. IMO

Let me say WHY I don't like stage racing; race for the championship; AND that DAMN FREE PASS BULLSH#T!!! STAGE RACING: Years ago race teams NEEDED to "out-scheme" each other AND have equipment that would LAST!!! If you DIDN'T, you would finish behind. NOW...Here comes stage racing. "Oh, I DON'T have to play the fuel mileage game like I USED to?" "Wait a minute!! You're saying I don't even HAVE to TRY to PUSH my car to the limits UNTIL the LAST 50 or so LAPS!!!" "WHAAAAT?!?!?!?! My car has to only make it to the END of the stage and then I get to CATCH UP?!?!?!?!" "GREEEAAT!!!! I'll just sandbag back here in 20th and save my car; my engine; my crew; my driver AND my MONEY on equipment because it won't cost me a BIT to run at 80%, just as long as I STAY on the lead lap!!!" Even the BEST cars AND BEST drivers could be put behind the wall because of a $5.00 part falling apart suddenly when the car was being "pushed to its limits" all race-long. RACE FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP "I just won the Daytona 500, NOW ME AND my team don't HAVE to TRY to win ANY MORE races UNTIL the chase begins!" "Lessee, I can race guys up near the wall; I can crowd them low; I can box them in; Heck...I can EVEN run them over because I'M in "The Chase" ALREADY!!!" "If I run like an a#@hole EARLY and FORCE guys to make bad choices and get enough points accrued EARLY, I CAN make "the show" on points ALONE!! THEN I'll be a "somebody" and people will talk about me on the news; and I'll get commercial deals; and I'll be recognized; and I'll be....and I'll be...and I'll be..." (Rust 💩stain) FREE PASS "My car isn't running very well." Crew chief: That's o.k. just stay on the lead lap until the end of the stage. We'll fix you up. Me: Who's leading? Spotter:Joey is and he's blistering the field right now but we only have ten to go until stage caution. He may catch you but he won't catch 25th place before the break. Three laps later.... Spotter: That's Joey behind you. Give him a battle for at least three laps and he won't catch the #17 before the break. Four laps later... Spotter: Let him go. We'll get the free pass. A hundred laps later and only ten to go... Spotter: That's the race leader ahead of you and you're catching him. Me: Aren't we separated by only three points right now? Crew chief: Yes. If you win, you take the championship. Race winner is me.... Joey's afterthoughts: I raced my GUTS out! Led the most laps! Had twelve cars on the lead lap at the end! AND...at one point...had HIM a lap down in 24th or so!!!! AND...it took me SIXTY SOME laps to do THAT!!! Yet....HE wins and I don't.

i agree with 99.5 percent of what ken said, but i would love to hear him explain how less horsepower makes for better racing?
