What happens too often in the doctor's office is this: A patient does keto on his own, and the doctor sees that the patient (1) lost 25 pounds (2) lowered his fasting blood sugar (3) lowered his blood pressure (4) lost his eczema (5) improved his mood (6) got rid of his digestive ailments (7) raised his "good cholesterol" (HDL) and (8) drastically lowered his triglycerides. But then the doctor sees that the LDL went up, and declares that this diet is unhealthy, Such a doctor simply needs to learn the science around cholesterol, and to stop taking medical advice from congressional committees and other bureaucrats.

Preach it Frank! My endocrinologist about fell off his chair when my six thyroid nodules shrunk 2 years running after growing (on SAD diet) for 8 years. This still can't change his mind to use Keto to reverse his type 2 diabetic patients. Medical doctors are so afraid of the lows. I can imagine that even one patient in a diabetic coma would be devastating to a doctor. Teaching someone how to dose insulin is so different than teaching someone how to eat low carb and safely lower their insulin. Even the smartest brains and most well meaning doctors can't seem to wrap their heads around how safe this is and how healthy it is! I will give him Dr. Westman's new book, End Your Carb Confusion and Gary Taubes' new book, The Case for Keto & keep shrinking those nodules. What else can we do?!?!

5 months ago my daughters and granddaughter took a girls getaway weekend and I couldn’t go because i knew I was unable to walk and keep up with them. I I’m 63 yes old and don’t want to miss another opportunity to spend time with my family. After crying and feeling sorry for myself I opened KZbin and started searching. I’ve lost 38 lbs already and my kids are planning all the things we can do together next summer. They are so proud of me. Keto is sustainable it’s a lifestyle not just a diet and I feel better than I have in years.

My story isn't about weight, and I often regret that these conversations focus on obesity, although I understand why that's the case. I went carnivore about a year ago, at age 63, and eliminated my eczema and blepharitis, which more than one doctor told me wasn't curable, only manageable. The relief I experienced from ending that wretched itching is indescribable. I hope anyone with a chronic condition takes matters into their own hands and researches the proper human diet. You do NOT need to suffer. And the solution is FREE. That's why it's unpopular.

It was so wonderful to hear Dr. Atkins mentioned and how wonderful he was. I remember when I bought his first book in the late 1970's. He was a true pioneer and his reputation has been sullied since his death. This made me really mad. I think he deserves A LOT more credit than he presently gets. It says on Wikipedia that his diet is still considered the most popular FAD DIET in America. Excuse me?! I am so glad to see him being recognized recently with the respect that he deserves.

I'm not obese or diabetic but this conversation brings tears to the eyes because this is certainly true in the endocrine side of healthcare. Hypoglycemic from childhood to menopause, now with non-stop autoimmune and a-fib issues, untreated because of drug reactions. The patient repeatedly gets up the fortitude to ask the medical system for help and just as repeatedly is put through all the tests, told no this all looks fine, pays for all of it and drives home once again in discouragement because he or she is NOT FINE! We make the appointment because we NEED HELP, not to see if we pass the lab tests. We're NOT FINE!

I feel this comment so hard! This has also been my experience. I was healthy up until 4 years ago, when I began having weird symptoms like extreme fatigue, nerve pain and numbness in my feet and legs, anxiety, muscle and joint pain. In these 4 years, I've had ALL the lab tests/imaging studies and everything looks "normal" and doctors say I'm "fine". I'm absolutely NOT fine! I'm suffering and I need help. I've just started the keto diet, and hoping it will help me get my health back.

I also had lab tests that said I was fine, including calcium score for my heart was 0. But I had chest pain that was getting more frequent. I felt like a hypochondriac going to the cardiologist but he put me on a monitor for a week and I had a 10 second episode of ventricular tachycardia. An angiogram a month later showed a 70% blocked artery. One artery that could have killed me. No blood test was showing it.

I was watching an episode of Dr. Pimple Popper with my wife. A person came in with skin tags. The doctor asked about any other conditions. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (spelling?) . The doctor didn't know how they would be related. I turned to my wife and said, "she has insulin resistance! That causes both skin tags and PCOS. She's probably a type two diabetic. " The doctor looked up the connection, found it to be high insulin and insulin resistance, and found out that the patient had recently stopped taking her metformin for her PCOS or type two diabetes.

@@AnythingGoals The new Atkins version allows higher carb limits, even in the initial Induction Phase, that won't put most people into ketosis, so the weight loss is slower. I bought the 2002 book, "Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution" and I highly recommend reading that book, so then you can compare old and new. But if you're asking about Keto, there are as many different versions as there are keto gurus, and it's usually much more restrictive and complicated than old Atkins, so a much smaller percentage of people can stick to it and it tends to cause eating disorders in those who are vulnerable to that.

April 2023 I started keto and experienced a summer like I hadn’t had in a long time. The past several years, in the heat of the summer I’d have lower back pain and suffer sciatica, unable to function- stand for more than a couple minutes without having sciatic pain and difficulty bending down to pick something up or get a good night sleep. The summer of 2023 I’d say I was 85% improvement with minimal periodic pain. After 5 months on keto I switched to carnivore to give my gut a rest from fiber, and the inflammation came down so much quicker esp in my abdomen- leaving me with nearly a flat stomach Low carb is for me🎉

But, I kept hearing Dr. Westman and decided to go on it. I went from 289 lbs. to 220 in less than 6 months. I then went back to the VA Dr. He was shocked almost didn't recognize me! He was shocked after he looked over my blood profile. He asked me what I did? I told him I went on Dr. Westman's Keto diet. Then, he directed me out to the waiting room and told me to tell all the fat Vets what I did! And I did tell them!! I've lost 17 kg and reversed my fatty liver and my exzema has almost disappeared. My triglycerides went down, HDL up and LDL up. The doctor said great results and we expect LDL to go up under keto but as your LDL has gone up, by law I have to tell you that you have a risk of heart attack in the next 5 years and inform you about statins then you make the choice as to whether you take them our not. He did the spiel, I said no thanks- he smiled. A very enlightened doctor, more should be like him.

Dr. B. I would never have listened to anyone in the media concerning Keto. I would never believe the media. I had to bump into you on KZbin and start listening to someone who actually made sense to me to get started. I got my A1C yesterday and it is down to 5.6. I stopped taking blood pressure meds and found out w/o meds I have normal bp or even low bp. Would I tell anyone NOT to follow their Doctors advice on the food pyramid? You bet I would. It happened to me. This bad education needs to end. Who eats boxed cereal with milk and OJ for breakfast every day? Millions of people do.

Boxed cereal - made of grains, grains break straight down into SUGAR. Milk - full of SUGAR so as to grow babies as fast as possible. Never meant for adults. OJ - full of the SUGAR fructose, which is converted into triglycerides and stored as body fat. SUGAR, SUGAR, SUGAR. Crazy.

I love the story about Dr. Atkins funding the study! I did the Atkins diet as an inactive chubby teen with a duodenal ulcer. I loved it and it worked for me, but couldn't maintain due to peer, parent and doctor pressure as well as the prevailing fat-phobia of the times. I developed hypertension in my twenties, and eventually was sort of controlled with 3 hypertension meds, potassium, a statin and an antidepressant. I did the DASH/Ornish diet for about the next 20 years, (which incidentally did NOT work) but my cardiologist highly recommended it, along with cardiovascular exercise, which I always had trouble doing. When I turned 65, I started having severe gut and bone/joint issues (and thyroid symptoms with normal TSH). On my own I discovered Dr. Berry and the PHD. Fast forward 2 years: I lost the 50 pounds that took me from obese to normal (I'm short), I dropped my blood pressure and all the meds, I have no more joint pain, constant throat mucus, heartburn, diarrhea, and brain fog. I can briskly walk for miles now, and I feel great! Still working on the osteoporosis and getting my hair & skin back, but my LDL is "too high" (even though the rest of my labs are perfect) so my cardiologist is mad at me, and ready to dismiss me as a patient for non-compliance! Go figure.

And if the keto - carnivore world is going to convince physicians to take a better look at what their practice is and how to work with folks that need this diet, then there does need to be what's called evidence-based research or scientific research. Which is what Dr westman is doing. That way the recommendations are not just based on observation or opinion. I really really love his balanced approach and his presentations in multiple settings. Because he explains the science behind it not just what to do but why it's important.

I did Atkins when his second edition came out more than 30 years ago. I recently bought his first book and read it in one day. Dr. Atkins did advocate a low carb diet, almost carnivore, and he even talked about intermittent fasting in different words. In addition, Dr. Atkins advocated eating beef. I was completely shocked when Dr. Atkins died in such a horrible way.

Appreciate the credit given Dr. Robert Atkins. He never got his due. "They" dogged him every step of the way, since his first book in 1972 which truly was a "Diet Revolution". They hated that he was right. I'll always wonder if the good Dr. Atkins's unfortunate slip on the ice back in 2003 was an "accident". Very convenient timing for "them", the famous Dr. Cornish included. Thanks.

You're right about Doctor Atkins. For a period of time, Atkins was THE face to the public of low-carb/keto. He took so much flak, unfairly, that soon other low-carb keto diets that were only Barely different from Atkins came forward (South Beach Diet, etc....) and they all said essentially "Yes, low-carb is the way to go but we're not like that crazy Atkins diet! Oh, No! Ours is entirely different. We do HEALTHY low-carb/keto...." blah blah blah. And they would mischaracterize Atkins as consisting of nothing more than only eating the tops off of pizzas. As I said, these diets were all not much different from what Atkins actually put forth, but they wanted to distance themselves from Atkins specifically. There's a diet plan promoted on TV right now, that talks about insulin resistance. It's all the rage now to talk about IR, and actually that's probably a good thing. But I first read about "insulin resistance" in the Atkins book in February of 1999. (I started low-carb/keto Feb 17, 1999.) And the Atkins book had already been around for several (about 20?) years by then.

Exactly! Any company can slap a "keto" label on their product. It means nothing! The word "keto" is not regulated, and so anyone can make claims without any proof. Better to read labels for yourself, and know what a carbohydrate is. And better yet, eat as few packaged products as possible!

Back in insulin resistances, 65 pounds heavier again. I restarted Keto, and I've found so many improved recipes. Down 12 pounds and intermittent fasting 20/4 or 18/6 daily. Hello, do you mind if I ask you a question as a chiropractor, because my own primary care physician will not listen to or order the labs that my chiropractor has suggested. At the same time my chiropractor used to be in favor of carnivore and now she is backed off from that saying it's too strict. She can't give me specific answers as to why other than to say it's too strict and you need other vitamins and minerals and nutrients. I believe she has always been honest with me in the past research is about nutrition and supplements, I have taken her advice with good results. I don't understand the switch or her backing off from carnivore. I don't know she thinks I'm talking about the lion diet which is the strictest or what is going on and I cannot get a very clear answer from her at this time. I know you don't know her and don't know why she has backed away from what she thought was good. And she does say it's good as an elimination Diet for maybe about 2 weeks but not to live on for the rest of your life. How long have you as a chiropractor been on either keto or carnivore, and do you see any long-term problems with it?

You are truly a dynamic duo! I read Dr. John Yudkin's book, "Sweet And Dangerous" in 1972, when I was 15. It changed my life. A year later, I read Dr. Atkins's first book, which reinforced what I learned in Yudkin's book. I think avoiding sugar and carbs saved me from being obese, like my grandmother who weighed 300 lbs. and suffered a stroke in her 40's that paralyzed one side of her face, or diabetic, like my cousin who had 2 kidney transplants (both of which eventually failed), and was going blind and deaf by the time she passed away. Thank you both for what you do! You continue to refine and reinforce the low carb message!

He's easy to understand, has a very uncomplicated approach and I appreciate that SO much! I always follow "the doctors" for the solid information, as most of you (Dr. Berry, Dr. Westman, Dr. Berg, Dr. Cywes and Dr. Fung) prescribe the proper human diet/IF, and are super similar in approach which makes it so much easier to stop second guessing what you're doing and just stay the course. It can be SO easy to get lost in all the rules and different ideas people have about Keto/Carnivore. I love that the information comes from a medical standpoint specifically. I trust that.

My waking glucose averages around 77-85. I have lost 23 lbs six weeks, and the numbers keep going down. I am on 2 other diabetes meds, and will be talking to my primary about coming off of those when I go back in a couple of weeks. Seeing a new doc and depending on how amenable she is to Keto, I will either stick with her, or find a new one. Keto should reduce the chances of having a heart attack or stroke! Is what I learned from these MD's. I was told the LDL' s may slightly increase on this diet. But, I learned there are 2 types of LDL's : large ones & small ones. The small ones are the dangerous ones they said. The large ones are not dangerous and the increase in LDL's on this diet were the large LDL'S! Dr. Westman's studies showed a reduction of heart attacks with veterans at Duke. I think initially my LDL' S increased a little at first but today I have low LDL's, low bad cholesterol and high good cholesterol at age 73. God bless you!

Hi, is total carbs the carbs and fiber total? Ty..

@@diannereynaert9729 No. Total carbs does not deduct the fiber, that would be “Net” Carbs.

Pleasure to meet Dr.Westman in Phx at a keto seminar. You both are a favorite of mine that I follow. No matter how much I explain to my many diabetic family members how keto can help them....they either don’t get it, don’t care, say it’s too hard, say they can’t afford it.... and then continue to be sick....saddens me. So thankful to follow a sensible healthy plan.

I have been overweight most of my adult life. For 20 years I was told by my doctor that I was pre diabetic. Became full type 2 diabetic in early 2020. I refused meds. I started looking on KZbin for answers, thank God I found this channel along with Beat Diabetes. Not doing full keto but, I simply drastically cut sugars n carbohydrates. The weight just started coming off, no exercise. I’m down 45 lbs. I am down to size 31 jeans! I have added regular exercise because my knees no longer hurt.

As a nurse I have learned so much from both these great doctors. I count total carbs as Dr Westman recommends. Even though I fall off the wagon now and again, I get back on with longer fasts between. Not giving up on yourself is key. And I too am disappointed when myHbA1C was 5.7 no one flagged it up. On the way to better health thanks to you both . I found you on KZbin 2 years ago 🤩

I concur I started keto 25 days ago and within a few days started to see a total improvement in my health. Reflux disappeared, my mood and energy level increased, and my jeans are loose plus my belly fat is gone. ( I haven't weighed yet). I thought that menopause was the reason I was feeling sluggish and had gained 15 lbs. but It was the carbs/sugar. I've always been very active and a regular at the gym. Thank you Dr. Berry!!! I discovered you when I was looking for a way to treat toe nail fungus. After watching your videos I had a "light bulb" experience and it all made perfect sense. Keto is the most delicious and satisfying eating plan that I have ever experienced. I don't feel like I missing carbs/sugar because true flavor comes from real food. Again thank you Dr. B and your beautiful wife. Y'all keep me motivated.

Dr Berry I'm not doing Keto to lose weight but to get rid of RA inflammation. My goal is to get off the 2 meds I'm been on for 2 years.

Have just started keto about 2months ago. Was able to check urine ketones and I am there. Am headed towards carnivore bc I am 70 and have some pretty threatening health issues. So far my intense back pain is much better. Had wild caught salmon today and loved it. I am sold already on this type of eating due to the improvements I have already experienced. Thanks Dr s for educating us about the truth ❗🕊️😊🌹💗💓💛💜💞💙💐🌺🌄
