Thank you for these amazingly made instructional videos. Here in Missouri there aren't very many nearby places that teach kendo. Appreciate all the hard work you've put into making these. ☺

I am practicing KenJutsu. I was told that the proper motion when performing a Kiriosh vertical cut is to lift your arms exactly the way you explained in the video but when you bring the Katana or Bokken down you bring the hilt tilted vertically downward and before the blade is flat parallel to the floor you whip the handle like an ax cutting just before, also you bend your front knees and drop your weight. Is this the proper form to cut in Kenjutsu or does Kenjutsu, Kendo and Iaido all do their own way?

Would this be any different if you are using a wooden sword instead of a bamboo one?
@KendoGuide
@KendoGuide 7 жыл бұрын
Very different. Do you want to do kendo? or Do you want to do kenjutsu? Kendo needs a bamboo sword since you actually strike your training partners. If you don't have a partner but you want to practice the basics of kendo alone, I recommend the bokuto, the wooden one.

Hiro Imafuji I don't have a training partner. I want to practice basic, repetitive moves of kendo with proper form. But I don't know what moves those would be. Thanks.

As long as you don't develop bad habits by doing that, I don't see any problems there. Don't hurt yourself though.

Greetings Sensei. In some styles of Kenjutsu I have seen that they take the Bokken when practicing Joge buri all the way back almost touching their buttocks. They say it is for opening the chest, correcting back position and stretching the back. What is your opinion on this. (I am practicing Kenjutsu and I am really enjoying your videos. I find them very enlightning. Thank you very much.)
@KendoGuide
@KendoGuide 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. We have that method too. So nothing wrong with it. Just don't do it with a real sword :) Another reason for that type of suburi is to check if you're lifting your shinai straight or not. Here I am introducing the "basic" joge buri. Hope this helps!

hello, I have a question. If I am a left handed person, do i switch hands and feet stance? or do I need to re-orientate myself to right handed stance? I want to make sure I am not doing things wrong.
@KendoGuide
@KendoGuide 9 жыл бұрын
Salvador Garcia Do as shown. The left hand is considered to be the power hand so the way we grab the sword is actually better for the left handed. And plus the way we do in kendo has historical and cultural meanings so you do not want to ignore those; otherwise, it would become just stick-swinging. Go to the following page to read some articles on the left handed >>> www.kendo-guide.com/reasons-why-the-left-hand-is-more-important-in-kendo.html . Thank you!

I have a question would Kendo be any help in Martial Arts too I kinda wanna learn both at the same time and wanna know if it could be mixed with footworks or anything besides it ?
@KendoGuide
@KendoGuide 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. I have never done any martial arts other than kendo, iaido, jodo and naginata. Through my personal experience, I've never confused or mixed them. But of course, you need to adjust your movement depending on you are practicing. Whatever you do, that martial art has its theory and principle. If you ignore them, then you are not learning anything. As long as you follow the teachings of these martial arts, I am sure the martial arts will help each other. Hope this helps.

+Nick Butler This is a training method to control the sword. You should learn proper kendo from a good instructor. Not sure if you have or not but if you don't know about joge-buri, then you are not doing "kendo". You should look for a dojo that is under International Kendo Federation.

Hiro Imafuji i can understand a bit of the training. But shouldnt you be training with a real strike youd use soon after this training?
@KendoGuide
@KendoGuide 8 жыл бұрын
Nick Butler There are shomen uchi, sayu men after joge buri and naname joge buri. Joge buri is important training for your shoulders and shoulder blades as well. Our job is to study what we have learned thoroughly. When we choose what we must study, we will stop improving eventually.
