Actually the correct way to draw the shinais is not the shoto first and daito second as you said - it is the sword to be held in the left hand first (which can be either daito or shoto) and the right hand sword second. It is specified in the green referee rulebook (in more nice wording).

I'm just starting to learn nito-ryu now. Thank you for this video. But I think there's one sentence here that needs some clarification. "He takes the small sword out first, then the large one for sankyo. That's the correct way." In this situation, it is correct. But the draw order is not determined by the size of the sword. It's determined by the hand you're arming. Correct procedure is to draw the left-hand sword first with the right hand, then place it in the the left hand, then draw the right hand sword. If somebody is using the daito in their left hand, they draw the daito first, then the shoto. I think an easier way to remember this is that you always draw swords with your right hand. If you draw the right hand sword first, then you're stuck juggling both swords with the right hand as you try to put one in your left.

Very good video! I also like how you analyse the non-yukodatotsu attacks, and not just the spot-on ones like in an ippon reel. 👍🙂

Well, even if I now realised that the video I sent to you was not that great, I will really enjoy reviews of varius level kendo grading exam. It's quite efficient to hear advices for someone who got another style of kendo but at the same grade (or nearly) as myself.

After many years of doing kendo, I am learning an unbelievable amount of information from your videos (rants and analyses). Sometimes, the teacher's first language is not English, and I have a hard time understanding the finer points he's trying to explain. And other times I'm not astute enough to see what he's trying to show with his physical teaching. So, thank you very much.

I found your channel a week or so ago and am binge watching your past videos. I'm finding them really good and informative. I don't currently practice Kendo but would like to (I'll look for a dojo at some point but I'm not financial enough to do so right now) but looking at the partners, it seems like their distance is a little too close?? If the shoto was not present and the daito was held in front, wouldn't they be slightly further apart? I do apologise for my ignorance but I am trying to learn.

Hi Andy,thank you so much for doing this video. I recently started getting into Nito,this will defeinitely help me improve it and know what to look out for in the future. Keep them coming. If you could do more Nito videos in the future that would be great. I know it might be a bit difficult since you aren't a Nito player. How different are the Nito Kata from Ito? Are there Nito Kata for Nito players?

Missed this one apparently. Really nice Kendo from the Nito player I must say at this level. That do strike was quite nice at 14.50 or so. It's quite clean kendo. For whatever reason Nito and Jodan make it very tempting to snatch at kote though. Rather than commit and drive forward. I struggle with this in Jodan a fair bit, but it's on my radar now so I can work on it. Really like this chap's kendo though. Nice and controlled and always looking to take the sen. When he does use oji waza or any particular waza really it's for the right reasons it seems. He never looks to be striking for the sake of striking. He's putting in the work to generate opportunities. We'll done. I presume he passed.

I actually think Nito looks really good fun. I've still not taken Ikkyu so it's probably not to the time to throw all-in on it though. Might be nice to try it some time.

Dual wielding? That's an automatic ✔ on the "Awesome by default and would be amazing to know how to do" category. Thanks for the upload. On that note: how frequent are these Nito Ryu matches, are they allowed in a regular kendo match, and are there a decent number of schools in Japan that teaches them or better yet outside of Japan? Thanks

Nito is pretty rare, it's allowed in regular matches, and there aren't that many schools anywhere teaching it.

Gotta ask, is it proper form the way he lowers his left hand or folds his shoto over his stomach a lot of the time when striking? Seems like that would be considered a broken stance, but I really don't know enough about nito to say for sure.

@@BlueyFromMelbShuffle Thanks for answering, that does make sense. I was thinking about closing another line of attack while striking myself, and do makes sense with men. The move I found strange was him covering do when hitting kote, men seems like it'd be a more likely target in that case.
@ManneSegerlund
@ManneSegerlund 4 жыл бұрын
@@penttikoivuniemi2146 Because he is practicing sei nito (daito in right hand) you end up crossing your hands when striking kote. You can't lift the left hand without it getting in the way of the daito. If instead he was practicing gyaku nito (daito in left hand) you can use the shoto to block men.
@penttikoivuniemi2146
@penttikoivuniemi2146 4 жыл бұрын
@@ManneSegerlund I'm having trouble understanding why that would happen. I get that in kamae the shoto is in the area where the daito wants to move through, but after experimenting (I'm a HEMA practitioner who does Bolognese sword and dagger so I happen to have a similar set of weapons) a bit, it seems really simple to bring the shoto up while striking since as far as I'm aware, kote-strikes are supposed to be vertical like men-strikes.
@ManneSegerlund
@ManneSegerlund 4 жыл бұрын
@@penttikoivuniemi2146 Yes they are supposed to be vertical but in the end they end up being a bit angled inwards. Most importantly you want to use your shoto to deflect the opponent's shinai by striking it to the side. This makes it naturally to cross your arms. Try it it feels much more naturally than rising your left arm to block.
