The requirement jump from 3rd to 4th dan seems a lot bigger than it is between any subsequent dans. Having to control the fight against someone who is likely your peer in skill sounds very hard.

I'm 54, going for my third dan soon. I'm thankful to have many 3, 4 and 5 dan opponents and Sensei. I can see well what you mean in the video.

Update... many attempts later. The comments I am hearing is that they want you to know seme and start showing control of the situation for the 3rd dan exam. - I sometimes don't know anymore.

I don't agree with this analysis. All three should not have passed. The candidate that passed had two opponents that were clearly not ready. He had many occasions to show good quality, but mostly demonstrated shiai kendo

You cant get 1st dan where I live for the performance the 2 others did but mayby they choked?! Ive seen ppl underperform at 4th dan exam due to not having the mental readiness. Then again Ive seen ppl over perform there too. The passing candidate was lucky. Pays to be least bad of the bunch AND know that to have that much more confidence. Still have atleast some commitment to the trial?

dont know where you come from but first dan isnt really all that hard if you can perform fumikomi and somewhat resemble ki ken tai no ichi. Also the passing candidate wasnt really lucky. He is where he should be at 4th dan. I have no idea what grade you are but from what i think to hear between the lines is that you maybe failed a grading between 1st-4th dan. However you shouldnt never think you fail because at your country it is tougher than other places. Its a mindset of blaming others rather than improving your own shortcomings. Then again i probably made stuff up and you are perfectly fine. I passed san dan 2 years ago and dominated my partners in shinsa, but both passed the 3rd dan as well. Also i tried to not completely deny them any chance to show themselves, which i think is also important up to a certain point (probably only until 3rd dan).

@@paja2788 i train alot and that for years. Its not the fact i have it easier But you get what you put in. Since i do Kendo for 13 years and have spent the last 7 of those becoming as good as i can on a competetive Level, i got what i put in. Not trying to imply though that you dont try Hard. I cant know, But Maybe the others try harder.
