Section.80 was his independent debut (TDE) album & GKMC was his major label debut album with Interscope & AfterMath. I still count S80 as his 1st album & GKMC as his 2nd

Troy I appreciate your analysis of 2010s rap, the blog era and mixtape eras. You are the spark of certain conversations, with or without the recognition. You know it’s “for the art form and never the hand clap”. Keep these conversations going. 🙏🏾 love from NY home of #DaCulture 😂

Personally, I think the Kendrick Lamar EP, Overly Dedicated, and Section.80 are all "mixtapes" to some extent. Kendrick seems to have planned to make GKMC an origin story of sorts from very early on, and those previous three projects helped him eventually make the full-on entrance he wanted, with the benefit of being able to pull from his newfound experiences, mutual connections, and artistic momentum to make GKMC the best it could be. However, I do also think that aesthetically, Overly Dedicated is the one project closest to truly being a "mixtape". It's kind of funny that all three records leading up to GKMC - especially Section.80 - don't fit cleanly into any single box. Heck, if you take Kendrick at his word, GKMC is closer to a "short film" than an album! He's also kept us guessing ever since with projects like untitled unmastered and Black Panther, which may or may not also be Kendrick albums depending on how you look at it. Section.80 will always be a personal favorite of mine, though - in hindsight it feels to me like a thesis statement for everything he would go on to talk about for the rest of his career. In a way, it kind of acts as a prologue to the story of Kendrick Lamar.

i was going to mention Black Panther soundtrack and how involved Kendrick was in that in this video also but decided not to. good mention i remember Kendrick describing Section.80 as "the Album About Us" and GKMC "the Album About Him" or something like that

I’ve been a fan since Section 80, and considered it a mixtape even back then, but you’re right it was sold. Tbf Nipsey Hussle also sold mixtapes so I think this was when the definition was shifting.

Even though I think those other projects are quality, based off him saying “official, official” seems like in his mind that was all practice for the main event.. which was GKMC.

nipsey did an interview where he said that 50 cent gave him some game on why to not call your projects ‘albums’ prior to doing a distribution deal .. basically explaining that it helps your negotiations with a major label when you don’t have a history of record sales bc the label then has to guess/project what they think you’d do(numbers-wise) as opposed to having concrete data to refer to. so, knowing dot and nip were somewhat connected early on through tours & what not, it’s no surprise dot took such a brilliant approach to how he labled(no pun intended) his projects; and it’s also no surprise that both he and nip respectively have two of the best debut rap albums in all of hiphop history.

This is why people are so messed up by Doechii. This is also why when Cole said, “first one, second one, third one…” people were debating what he was even talking about. He was wrong about all of them, so it did’t matter. 😊 I count Section 80 as his first.

But he did a concert a few years ago called the section 80- damn concert and referred to section 80 as an album weird. GKMC was introduced as his major label debut. The first released through a major label but being his sophomore. I think they called it a debut for marketing purposes. Section.80 is his first album but was released on an independent label. Peace from Botswana. I remember listening to K.L.E.P., O.D. & S.80 in May/June 2012 waiting for G.K.M.C. Simpler times.

Yes its his 1st Album for me too. Its definitly produced independantly tho. But i came to the Conclusion that Dre & Jimmy Iovine just won't let him call it that without them eating of it. They did the same with Eminem's Infinite Album..Just another Exampme of Interscope Politics.

Then they said it was just a digital album and GKMC was the official debut album. Bro. Still confused

Drama got jammed in 2007, blog era mixtapes were after that like 2008-2012. It had effect for sure but people still continued to make mixtapes. I think Drama's issue was he was selling them when it had copywritten material on it

People saying GKMC as his first feels like a cop out to me so that the standards of his discography is maintained more nicely. We don’t see the same excuses for other artists, if that’s so then don’t inclue any albums from underground rappers when discussing their albums as they don’t have a major label release😂 What baffoonery is this!
