It looks like Billboard was on board with the record execs at the top of the year with their plan to "de-emphasize Hip Hop" in commercial standing and prioritize other genres like country and K-Pop. It seems that Kendrick derailed that plan with his undeniable performance during and after the battle. The inconsistency of Billboard is probably them doing what they were going to do originally being confronted with facts on the ground at years end.

Their precious numbers narrative they've been pushing is crumbling after NLU. Kendrick showed this year that they don't have as much favor or power as they thought. Hence the 180/ back paddle, there is a clear dissonance in they're number oriented coronation and what people enjoy. I think it’s a good pick, and they did a good job explaining why, it’s about the cultural zeitgeist. I don’t think Drake is on the list because he hasn’t really dropped anything of note this year. Even for all the dogs was last year. But the awards list, is super weird. I think the cut off for the awards portion is in October. And they probably got a lot of blowback for not recognizing Kendrick in the first place.
