I don't think any of you guys understand, 9th wonder is a genius. I genuinely don't understand how he made a beat this masterful utilizing 5 different fucking songs to make this song's instrumental, "Be Ever Wonderful" by Ted Taylor for the bass line on the first half of the track, adding "Mole on the Dole" by Climax Blues Band for the drums on the track, he then rode the drum track onto the vocals from "Atari" by Hiatus Kaiyote to create the transition into the beat switch, AND THEN he used "Ostavi trag" by September as the base beat for the second beat of the song where he sped up the audio, pitched it down, and adjusted the melody, then he used "Let the Drums Speak" by Fatback Band as the drumline for the second half of the track. 9th wonder is one of the smartest producers in the game I'm telling you

My favorite fact about this instrumental is how the interaction between Kendrick & 9th went. Story below ⬇️ Kendrick begged 9th for just one beat as they never collabed before. Kenny sent his vocals over to 9th so he could make a beat around it. When he sent this out, 9th Wonder decided to bless Kendrick with 3 beats in one, each tailor-made for the sole purpose of creating an environment for the story. The first beat’s sample (Ted Taylor’s 1972 version of ‘Be Ever Wonderful’) highlights Anthony’s upbringing, fueled by severe poverty and soul music (the record has that little crackle, like a worn-down vinyl). The second beat’s sample (Polish group September’s ‘Ostavi Trag’ from 1976) contains that almost holy, yet chaotic choir sample, detailing the tension of Top Dawg’s life at the time along with LA’s rise in gang wars at the time. The third beat’s sample (‘Atari’ by Hiatus Kaiyote in 2015) is used specifically to shed light on Ducky, Kendrick’s dad. This warm environment the sample brings is symbolic of what Ducky means to Kendrick’s life and how he was a beacon of hope for his family during struggling times. 9th Wonder and Kendrick are huge fans of each other, and when Kenny came knocking, 9th knew he had to cook up something special, especially for a story like this. DAMN.

Darkness in a vacume zz Silence in a speaker Short handed but a firm grip Solid stance yet I still slip Ice pick but a blunt tip Will you find love again Will you find love again Depends if he deepens THeir love Or does it just depend on me Promised that I will defend Treasure patient Planed placement Still adjacent is the goal of gold Revolved around troubled Thoughts of old their benefit Is when when I was sold Sell my work can sell my life Take my life cant keep your word This world full of ignorance Indulging in bitterness Where the truth has a spin with it Where the indifferent are Inconsiderate Around the corner is where indecision is Pester the jester and be stood up Dumb spoke bespoke young bloke used as the end of jokes Choked on the stage of stadiums Say to them If you want to make it then expose yourself Naked and afraid again of a false truth Reputations easy screwed Harder to mend too I have my sword and armor After every battle I tend to an arrow in the chest in not the best but reminds the other soldiers by my shoulder Not to forget That if you lose focus in moments It means your death And not just ours too but those besides you There is no round 2 The closest Is forgiveness But let me remind you That we are on diffrent paths and those that behind you Are in a hurry Like a Tesla switchin lanes just to blame you For getting to the same place at the same time With the same veiw Seady realization that I have been waiting for death at a train station It said go live your life forget you spite Do not dare spit on this gift Or end it Sit back and realize everything you have done Been the better one Been better path setter Once bedwetter Turned to humble servant that knows for certain That not a single person can take away Love given under curtains Meaning god knows me and I'm learning Still yearning young child thought to turn to streets pickpockets with such ease that a Swift magician couldnt hold a card to me But juxtaposed by this Sugar honey iced tea to sweet to bittersweet History that makes you think instantly that It's against all the odds that I haven't corroded my gold and sold that part of my soul for a piece of industry That wouldn't even consider me If I'm gonna make it you gonna hear what I have to say even if I have to yell in ears to define the truth that's deafening Triped and dazed He said to me Many people make the same mistake Kissing me Zip and a pucker Give me 30 minutes Same skin of the lips A semi forced opening D as in dont But b like dont you dare stop weeping bitterly Imma make sure that at least a piece of you remembers me I lust for the taste of your tears He tears me apart I want you by my side year after year My chosen one Resite another line from your pretty petty heart 2020 reminiscent Still forgetting to not remember Mind palace sweeping this sin under a rug Then burn the building I said I was searching for love This ain't the real thing The only thought that leaves a taste not as acrid Is the seconds you acted right by me Held me dear in your aftercare A smile under my muzzle when you nuzzled me Midnight cuddling Muffled screams Terrified and teary eyed Satisfied thoughts scary like Trying to snuff that out The flame inside That tells me I should reside With these self damaging thoughts of mine
