This guy is very close-minded. Seems like he doesn’t like any innovations or any risks taken. He’s only expecting pure rap, the way a rapper would perform in a battle, his capacity of freestyling and or his complex and diverse vocabulary (the more different words are used in a song, the more talented a rapper is according to him). Like he’s stuck in the 90’s. It makes his reviews way too subjective, from a perspective of someone who sticks to the 90’s standards. He isn’t considering the more artistic/ conceptual aspects of hip hop albums, or the influences of other music genres in it. Only « true » hip hop matters. That’s why he doesn’t consider TPAB like one of the best rap albums ever made, or doesn’t consider Kanye or Tyler to be great rappers with great projects, regardless of their delivery, flow or pure old head perspective of ability to rap.

This is what happens when you’re inflexible and out of touch with the intended audience. I get that you think Kendrick stans are a great deal comprised of white suburban SJWs who like “edgy” and “progressive” music but there’s something that’s going on in the music industry that you’re missing: the shedding of genres. People got mad at Kanye for 808s. People hated on Tyler for Flower Boy, Igor, Call me… well, all his albums, really. Another Kendrick album that got hated on was Untitled. People said they were too edgy or too R&B, too pop, too jazzy. Why should artists be pigeon-holed into making one sound? Why are black artists more so pushed into rap/r&b and told they can’t deviate from the style we’re used to or their music is “wack”? I ask that before you formulate your opinion on Kendrick or this album look at the heart part 5. The video and the song itself. It’s a masterpiece. Why? Because if you look sincerely at the message, digest it, and rewatch it, and relisten, you’ll be moved to tears. It’s about Black American culture. Which is hip hop. Hip hop is more American than baseball or apple pie or NASCAR. I can’t think of anything more quintessentially American than hip hop, which has in part served as the voice of black culture in America. My point is when you have someone like Kendrick who has done such a SERVICE to the culture via Heart pt 5 or any number of his other anthems that define a portion of culture, an era, a time capsule or a place, you don’t get to call him trash. He’s revered because his artistic creations have been so monumental in THE CULTURE that he speaks of. He says he’s not a savior because he’s not one. If you actually listen it’s not a conflicted message but his struggles living as a flesh and blood imperfect man, with the spirit of God coming out of him (as it does in all of us), striving to be “Christ-like” while being human and flawed. That being said, he made “DAMN”, “Blacker the Berry”, “Good Kid Maad City”, “Levitate”, “DNA”, “XXX”, “Money Trees”, and so much more - so yes if he just recorded an album of him farting it would be weird but he’s still revered to the culture at large. And to consume hip hop - a fruit of the culture - you should respect the culture before you do another “hot take”. Respectfully.

90s made good music, it's literally called the "golden age" for a reason. That is why people who like that hip-hop will also call out when something just isn't up to par quality wise. We shouldn't encourage going backwards. The fact is that a lot of hip-hop has been trash in comparison in modern times, as with a lot of things people aren't creating as amazing things as they used to, it's probably a lot because of today being more about fast, quantity, it's the society and times, so less quality is a logical outcome. You can see it in a lot of things, like while there are great movies today as well, if you look at in general the average movie isn't very good, while you can go in the 90s and you'll find a lot of good movies were made. HHU isn't strictly 90s btw, so that's false.

@@Dezzyyx nigga, of course there's gonna be trash music, there is trash music now and there was trash music in the 90s, that's how things evolved, yall need to stop being so judgy with anything that is slightly less traditional and more experimental we are not in the golden age anymore. Meh, to each their own. I immediately liked the album the first time I listened to it in public, though only the first disk. Then, after listening to only the first disk a few times, I thought "You know what? I'm by myself, I got nothing better to do, let me give the second disk another try." And I fell in love with, like, half of it. I still didn't like some of the songs but at least half of them surprisingly grew on me really fast. I then, finally listened to the second disk one more time because i'd gone through the worst part of my life and wanted to listen to the entire album to past the time; and just like that I fell in love with all the other songs. I feel like you just really need to be in a certain mood to comprehend what you're listening to and sometimes that takes multiple listens, but after that it goes from "Wtf is he talking about? Ts is ass." to "Oh shit, I relate to that and see what he means, i'm in love"

@@MrClapTrap "How is talking about emotional abuse, addiction, and violence woke?" --- thats not the only things he talks about on the album. you're being extremely intellectually disingenuous right now buy leaving the other topics out... so you're going to pretend like he doesn't talk politics around cancel culture, transgender & LGBT issues, the usage of LGBT slurs, race issues, the bIack plight in america, police & other race & identity politics related topics. "That's shit people deal with on the daily." --- ok cool. do i wanna hear about it 24/7? nope. i'm already inundated with that garbage on twitter, on facebook & on the front page of youtube... i don't care about it. my entertainment is an escape from reality, i don't wanna be reminded of how i'm underprivileged because of my race in my music too. i'm bIack & i'm sick of hearing about race & these identity politics related topics tbh. sh!t gets old... fast. "It's a great album and to say it sucks is insane." --- its alright. by far kendricks worst project to date. he cared more about catering to the woke crowd by speaking on these issues , than actually making the music good. you care more about what he's saying, than how it sounds. at the end of the day, the music still needs to sound good. if i want a message & want to be preached at, i can go to church for that. "If you don't like it, fine, but sucks? Hell nah." --- i don't like it & most other people don't like it either. i knew something was up when critics gave it perfect scores & the general public hates it. that shows the critics are out of touch with the listeners, the people who buy the product. this always happens with "woke" movies & TV... movies like Moonlight, that tackle "woke" topics like LGBT issues or other agendas the media forces down people's throats, these type of things, critics always give perfect scores to. if it has a "woke" message, they'll rate it high... if its just fun entertainment or is fanservice aimed at the fans, the fans will like it but critics will rate it low... this is why i no longer listen to critics. if its woke, they'll always rate it highly. no matter if its actually good or not. thats what this kendrick album is. its the music equivalent of "oscar bait" ken knows it will be highly regarded by critics if it has a woke message or speaks on woke topics" like race, gender identity. so he focuses on pandering to the woke crowd, instead of just making a good project like Good Kid Maad City.

In those albums, Kendrick knew what he was doing and sounded confident, like a guy who knows he's king. Even in Family Ties it sounded like he was still the same vicious rapper he'd always been. Mr. Morale sounds like an album that was thrown together in a couple of months with a production that makes it sound all grand, but the essence just isn't there. It feels... forced. I definitely think the pressure to make a Kendrick worthy album must have been crushing, but don't fake it. I would have happily waited for another 5 years if that would have taken for him to be confident in his shit and just do his thing. Not rush the thing and hope that the Kendrick name carries the project. I really hope his next album brings my GOAT back. If not, I might have to give that title to Cole.

Couldn't agree more with this review and all the points you made - someone needs to say it. I've always felt Kendrick has been massively influenced by past greats (by his own admission) to the point he _tries too hard_ to be like some of the deep, legendary characters that he looks up to (in a desperate effort to be one of them himself) because of how they made him feel as a young fan; particularly 2pac. In turn he obviously now wants to be viewed with the same admiration as an artist himself. The religious symbolism and being a vessel for God. The defiant, activistic, truth spreading persona with the profound social commentary, the romanticised urban cult figure awaking the youth to cultural hardship and expanding consciousness etc. It just doesn't come across as particularly impressive or profound in Kendrick's case for me, because it feels too forced, calculated and *theatrical.* like he's portraying the character he wants to be in an effort to be culturally iconic, it's all too OTT and gets so tiring. Also adding a modern pseudo-intellectual twist, dropping new-age buzz words like "consciousness" and "chakras". I can imagine to a younger person who isn't familiar with the shtick he's pushing here, and also who hasn't studied earlier hip hop, these repackaged concepts will come across as ground breaking and enthralling; and importantly they will also appeal to the listeners intellectual ego and make them feel like they are witnessing the works of some kind of enlightened modern street prophet lol With characters like 2pac it still felt raw, down to earth, genuine and you could _feel_ that. Non of his material felt forced, deliberately theatrical or artistically contrived. That's why he could effortlessly bounce from one completely different subject to another, record his vocals and not even play it back and study it; he was 100% just being himself. Furthermore, I find Kendrick's flow simply unlistenable/garbage at times (But I guess I haven't listened to some of those verses long enough to truly understand and grasp the intended artistic beauty of these off-beat anomalies), his voice *whiney* and _flat out annoying,_ his beat choice mediocre/poor, and some of these drawn out song intro's which are under the guise of a poetic urban messenger -- are just try-hard, self-indulgent word salad cringe masqueraded as profound intellectual introspection. Basically it's all too try hard, I can't imagine paying to listen to this stuff.

I get that this album was a little experimental but come on, trash? Also, I don't like how you said for some songs 'You can't bump this' as if every rap song only exists to be played at parties. And how is We Cry Together a Kim ripoff? Because it's about toxic relationships? Eminem doesn't own the right to make songs about domestic abuse. I agree that Kodak Black is normally bad and maybe outrapped Kdot, but it really didn't sound like Kendrick was trying on that one. Don't get why you think his fans are social justice warriors. 4/10? Hardly 'trash'. That's all I have to say. Sorry if my comment seemed jumbled, I was typing as I was watching.

The problem wasn’t that it was “experimental”, the problem is that it wasn’t executed well. It’s only impressive when your experiment leads to songs that you can bump and not everyone can do that. A lot of those songs were just straight up unlistenable.
@justsomeguywholikesmangoes13632 жыл бұрын
@@mistahmst I feel like some of these songs are supposed to be rough listens (e.g. We Cry Together) and, as I said in my original comment, some rap songs aren't supposed to be bumped or be fun listens. I highly doubt Kendrick wrote We Cry Together thinking ''Fuck yeah, the clubs are gonna have this on repeat.'' I called it experimental because it's different to most rap, whether it's good or not. Experimental isn't a compliment.
@mistahmst2 жыл бұрын
@@justsomeguywholikesmangoes1363 yeah, I don’t buy the whole idea that any truly great rap songs don’t have to be enjoyable to listen to. Every great rap song I can think of has something that makes you wanna keep listening to it no matter how experimental it is or how depressing the subject matter may be. I’m not even talking about club songs, “Slippin” by DMX isn’t a club song, but I can still bump that.

One of the most confusing parts about this video and what really sold this as a bad review is the blatant dismissal of the slow dynamic increase as an Eminem inspiration. This type of stuff is seen in all types of music and is used to convey emotion in a more impactful way. Kendrick stays in a slow mutter reflecting on the times he couldn't convince his family about his dad, but then as he is finally able to convey it to them, he gets louder until he's yelling. Classic dynamic contrast.
