I agree that this album will go down as one of the most important albums in hip hop history. I'm not African American, i'm hispanic, but i feel that this album really gives a voice to all minorities who go through the same violence, the same discrimination, and overall the same struggle. I feel that this album made all of us embrace our race and promote unity amongst all races. Great album, great review subbed.

The album is amazing. The transitions, the buildup of the statement throughout, the art is just beautiful. He really hit home with this. It's a masterpiece that will live on. I would say this is the rap version of Thriller. From the aspect of standing the test of time. It's a portrait of greatness. Well done K Dot!

Your review was executed so well that I became a subscriber. I love this album for many reasons. One, he strayed away from the redundant "trap sound" and went with a sound that was so refreshing that you want to go back and listen to it even if you don't like it. Two, he didn't follow up with another good kid, m.A.A.d city. If an artist doesn't evolve you'll get the same "safe" projects from them which tends to push fans away. Three, the social commentary. He touched on a number of topics that many of these mainstream acts won't. While they are rhyming about the same money, cars, clothes and clubs over a DJ Mustard beat Kendrick is giving us substance. That's hip-hop! Great review good sir. Salute!

Thank you for this! "This will be important for music" that's so true. Our world needs this kind of message. It's an amazing thing. I don't think you can really compare GKMC to this, GKMC has such a gritty Hip Hop West Coast feel and this was the funk and it really focus's on other people, not only just Kendrick himself. Dope review! I really enjoyed his constant battle with fame or Lucy on songs like the for sale interlude. How much a dollar cost was incredible. I really love the fact that by the end of the song you realize that the homeless man was god and a dollar cost him his ticket to heaven. The for free interlude was so dope , just the way he portraits America as a woman hating on the black man, that interlude sets up the whole album. This tops gkmc for me I mean he intertwined the whole album with a poem... Brilliant.

Excellent review man. I don't think that the record lets up on any track. There is no ballad, no true club beats, and nothing shallow lyrically. Hands down, one of the greatest records of all time in any genre, let alone hip hop.

So after my first listen I knew I had to go back and listen to it at least 3 more times. After every listen it grew on me more and more. The album definitely has a different feel and most likely won't hit the radio but I do expect some type of award or recognition for the art aspect of the album. Kendrick has once again blew my mind i was already in love but now i can't stop listening. This album is definitely going to set the tone for the rap game of 2015!

I personally like this album more than GKMC or Section 80, but they were such different albums comparing seems is hard. It's like comparing apples to cake. They're both food, but completely different..

This album is by far the dopest, most influential, inspiring work of art I've listened to since Tupac. Kendrick Lamar really raised the bar as he said he would do, and I've been listening to this album non stop over and over again. I love this album! I had to listen to this album 4 times consecutively to really understand its message. And I've only done that with a few albums (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Illmatic, The Chronic, The Low End Theory, All Eyez on Me and Tetsuo & Youth) You don't really have to do that with any Drake(obviously) or J.Cole album. Ands that's what makes him better than them. He has a complex message that requires you to think. Don't get me wrong I love Drake, Kanye, J.Cole, old Jay Z etc. But kendrick right now is on a whole other level. Also people really need to listen to Lupe, not as mainstream as them, but his lyricism and metaphors are some of the best of all time. He might be the best lyricist of all time.

Okay it would be awesome if when your choosing the tracks for the album, they keep out a great one from any edition. Let the album run it's course. But when it starts dying down, drop that aforementioned single. Even if it isn't on your next record, that single will pump the anticipation and make the artist seem busy. This is kind of random.

This album seems like it can win a Grammy. I like that the album is more art than hip hop and rap. Its also a very nostalgic album and I wish we had more stuff like this compared to the negative crap that's out now.

Yes, the Grammy's shouldn't be the end all be all for measuring music. However, if he were to win one for this album it would have more positive impact on the genre than a negative one.

There is no wrong interpretation to art, but I do think you somewhat missed the point of the Wesley's Theory. Wesley Snipes went to jail for tax evasion a few years ago. I think the first verse of the song is him talking about what the typical rapper would do when they get famous. They're gonna blow all this money and just spend till they don't have any. The second verse starts out with "Hi my name is Uncle Sam..." and is reassuring Kendrick that it's okay to spend all his money. There's even a point in the second verse where he says don't worry about the receipts, which is a way to write off your taxes if you keep receipts. And then you have the classic line, "I'll Wesley Snipes yo ass before 35." I don't neccassrily think the song is about the world's view of Kendrick. I think it's more about how the music industry will milk rappers for all their worth and then just toss them to the side. Kind of like what happened with Trinidad James. It's a kind of criticism on the American Dream more so than racial commentary. Also when you think about Kendrick's first lines, "At first I did love you/But now I just wanna fuck...". It's kinda like Kendrick is personifying the rapper who sells out in order to get more cash. At first I rapped because I loved the art of hip hop and rapping, but now I just want cash. You could also spin it to the music labels. Yeah we'll capitalize on your one hit, milk you for all your cash, make you sign all these contracts to where you have no control over your music and then we will just toss you aside and the next big thing. Like I said, there is no such thing as wrong interpretations when discussing art, but I do think you slightly or somewhat missed Kendrick's intention with the song. I would love to hear you elaborate more and discuss what led you to your conclusion.

This album is a 7/10. The album is average and Kendrick is an average artist. I like the meaning he has to his songs and his flow is usually very good but his voice is sometimes annoying and his lyrics are mediocre. I have listened to from many artists from the 80's til now and this shouldn't even be considered the best album of this year and not a top 100 album of all time. I hate to say it but this wasn't even the best project to come out last week because Tinashe's mixtape was better. The standard for "great" artists has been lowered dramatically so any decent lyricist is amazing to people.

People are hyping this album too damn much. Is it a great album? Yes. But it's not original nor is it game-changing. These topics have been done to death (he himself is taking Tupac's lead). It's also a bit of a mess and not as coherent as Good Kid. Does anyone honestly believe it's going to inspire any change in the world? It's not even outselling J.Cole's Okish album (and he's hardly a mainstream favourite) despite this huge push by the critics. The one thing I love about it, however, is the production; but it's starting to get ridiculous when people talk about this as a classic. Give it time and stop getting caught up in the hype.

I don't mean hype in terms of people liking it. Fair play to anyone who wants to rave about how great it is. I am talking about hype in terms of comparing it to masterpieces and overstating it's social significance. These issues have been touched upon before, probably even better (Tupac). Yet some would make you believe the wheel was just invented. I think even J. Cole has outsold it's first week's sales which says a lot. Man, did KL paid you for this review? I'm sorry, but I just don't agree with this review. The production on this album SUCK. Well, no disrespect, this album is NOWHERE near as good as GKMC album. The lyrical content is on point, but it just so happens that I buy music to have great music production first and foremost. And trust me, they released this album when they wanted to. Top Dawg wasn't mad about the supposively early release date. It's a scheme. They got everybody talking about the early release didn't they? Well, no disrespect to anyone else review, it just not the type of music that I prefer.
