That's my biggest takeaway from this project: that Kendrick has fallen back in love with the art of rapping and with hip hop in general, hence his referencing the music that played a part in his formative years. It's returning to his roots in a way; getting outside his head and into the game more, to express his love and passion more than his discomfort and inner turmoil. As much as I love Kendrick's more complex and thoughtful projects, this is already looking to be one of my favorites simply because of how much fun Kendrick and his cohorts seems to have had making it. Stuff like "tv off"'s Mustard shout and the entirety of "peekaboo" would NEVER have happened in any post Section.80 Kendrick project, and that's what makes those moments so enjoyable. It's clear from how the album feels that Kendrick is a very different state of mind than he was on DAMN. and Mr. Morale, and that's not only okay, but a good thing; he's reinvigorated. Reincarnated, one might say.

i think that gnx is stripped back and lowkey for a reason. it feels like a bit of a full circle moment, kendrick talks a lot about reincarnation and rebirth on the album and it feels like returning back to section 80 in a great way. its like he prestiged. he took all the knowledge from his previous albums and brought it forward into something that encapsulates how he made art at his outset. instead of being the kid in the backseat of the car with no control over his life but how he engaged in artistry, now he gets to sit in the driver's seat and pave a new road for hip hop's future. its mad powerful to me. but i also get why a lot of people feel like its kinda under expectation for kendrick. i think reincarnated and gnx are the songs that really set how i engaged with the album. one song that serves as a followup to tpab and damn where he acknowledges lucy as an aspect of himself and one song where he recreates the feeling of the backseat freestyles he rapped about on gkmc.

Kendricks previous albums have been large, detailed oil paintings. Telling a very deep story and a lot of forethought was clearly put into every brush stroke. They tell stories of years gone by to build up a larger concept. The only reward for surviving is more time to reflect type music. GNX feels like a photo. It's less involved for sure. But it's more immediate. It needed to be. He didn't have the time to bust out the paints to show what was happening in the moment, so he reached for the Polaroid. In heavy music, I see way more metal bands going for that big painting vibe as a means of getting a more nuanced emotional message across, and a lot more punk bands trying to get the perfect photo to really show something immediate/visceral/fast-moving. It's a really cool way to look at record-making, at least in my opinion. I like what Kendricks done here. Showing he can be as poignant in a timely, photographic manner as opposed to his usual long planned paintings style. Whether he sticks with this style of workflow or goes back to bigger concept albums, idk. Anyway, appreciate the vid Big Boss. I needed a good chaser after that election discourse haha

I'll be real, I think Section 80 is he weakest project. And its not at all bad. I just think he drastically matured his sound after that album. And to keep it all the way real, anyone could seriously debate ANY of his other albums as being the best. I won't speak on GNX yet, because though I am playing it on repeast and enjoying tf out of it, I just want time to let it breathe before I consider ranking it. What I think makes Kendrick unique, that only a few artist can claim, is every one of his albums sound drastically different from the next. So whatever you're at in life, what sort of production you are feeling, what sort of message you need to hear, you can honestly argue for any of his albums as being his best. And that just speaks to his raw talent as an artist. Not just a rapper, and legitimate artist. And though a lot of rap fans have thought it since TPAB, Kendrick in the past year has solidified himself as one the top teir GOATS. He will have to be on ev ery "top 10" list, and actually debated as being number 1. Not just current, but of all time. I am not here to claim he is, I have a lot of respect for OG's, but you have to entertain that conversation now. This current run he on is so raw and legendary that not giving him that respect is simply disrespectful. lol We are blessed to be able to see it all happening in real time. But while TPAB is still probably my personal fav, "too much poetry, not enough bangers" is definitely the common line among Kendrick haters. All I know is when he said he was rocking Anita Baker in the tape deck of the GNX it was over. Rapture is one of my favorite records of all time, grew up on that stuff.

@andresoef33 минут бұрын
I'll translate it for you bro: "I feel like GNX is Kendrick watching how he left rap/hip hop/the culture after m*rdering Drake. I believe that the album's concept is Kendrick driving around in his GNX car, looking out the window at the state of Compton/the west coast/the culture after his comeback. He no longer has the messianic pretensions off TPAB era. After MM&TBS, Kendrick healed himself. He accepted that, as much as he wants to be the best, he doesn't have to be hip hop's savior. I believe that gnx tries to show Kendrick as just another part of the scene, seeing himself as a mortal man instead of a messiah". Espero te sientas conforme con mi traducción, I did my best tho un saludo bro jaja 🙌

The reason why this is my favorite project of his since Section 80 is BECAUSE it feels less "contrived" as a project. It feels raw, in a classic New Golden Era mid-90s - 00s, sense. Authentic, yet still cohesive and well-presented. These are the kind of projects we don't get much of any more in the modern era, so I fucks with this.

A channel pointed out, the First track “Wacced Out Murals” is a slowed beat of “Friends” by whodini 🤔.. so many layers to this project but I do agree-This is his Low Effort for someone like KDot- this was a MESSAGE that went over ALOT of heads

FD wants scarin the huzz music out of Kenny for it to be a serious release, sum times(most times) ppl want to dance not gawk at an abstract, complicated or complex ideas just to not listen to it because it’s too heavy or situational to put back on. No need for a video essay this time it’s still good music without it(not clown shoes), and a few of us actually want to hear you express how much you like a song that’s y I clicked that’s why I watch reactions of the album, it’s to see creators I like to listen and enjoy the music I also like

As a Black Jamaican Canadian, if I was Kendrick, I wouldn't even perform the song, I would use one band member to play the beginning notes and let the entire audience sing it, and film them all. The message is bigger than Drake and thats what he doesn't understand and why he will always show up late.shm

The album is watching a master of his craft go back and bring current skill to an earlier part of his career. It's like a mix tap he made to sell out of the back of his trunk at the Compton swap meet.

My experience with rap was ... limited and shallow, to put it politely, before the beef. Not even listening to Drake limited but like having about 20-30 songs in my playlists. Yes, white guy present if it wasn't clear. But ever since following the beef I've been diving in and working my way through Kendrick's work, and I'm definitely going to be diving into other artists throughout the years and the present day. That being said, I was super happy to go through my first live experience of a Kendrick album release, and get to enjoy the work while interacting with others. The album is amazing. There's really not a song I don't like on the album, and I absolutely love Reincarnated and Gloria. Gloria in particular is very beautiful and inspiring to me since I'm a writer. I feel challenged to work on my craft and be as great as possible. If you're a writer that song should fire you up and make you feel like you should be working harder.

I think part of it's just that Kendrick feels like the king right now. He's on top of the charts, everybody loves him, he won the culture war, now this is his victory lap. I think putting all these LA dudes in is tight, and yeah I wish their names were listed in the song titles, but also rap fans are nerds now they're gonna find these people. I think it's also a little bit of, when you're the king you gotta pull other people up, and I think he's doing that in an interesting way.

This album was one of my favorites from Kendrick. All of his work is good, but from Like That til now he's just been showing that not only can he form a good concept, he can do any and EVERY flow. The flow diversity on this shit was amazing.
