1:10:43 Reading comprehension has become a huge problem these days. He was asked what "Not Like Us" means to him. He said It's the energy of who he is and the type of man he represents(Which he went on to elaborate). If you can identify with him you're part of "us". The explanation addressed the meaning of the phrase. The reason this question was so important is because certain groups of people had interpreted the words differently. Those who aimed to portray Kendrick as discriminatory, or sought to promote discrimination against others, had interpreted it in this way: 1. They (Biracial/white people) are not like us (black people). 2. They (canadians) are not like us (americans). 3. They (toronto people) are not like us (The west coast). This bothered me very much because I felt this was never Kendrick's intent. There are people in those categories who love and identify with his messages who would feel slighted if that were the case. I always believed that it was exactly like he explained it. The "Us vs. Them" theme was all about character, values, and behavior rather than superficial divisions. So, in the chorus, in relation to the whole song, if you support or embody the type of behavior he portrayed Drake and his crew as having, then you're not like "US" (Kendrick and whoever identifies with the type of man he represents). His words in Watch The Party Die also reinforced this idea: "And so it’s up, if you ain’t one of ours, it’s bad news" I liked the way Genius broke it down: "This lyric reads as a warning. Kendrick Lamar is drawing a line between those who are part of his circle or share his values and those who do not. “One of ours” implies a sense of allegiance, likely referring to those who align with his idea of integrity and vision for the future-as laid out in the second verse. Those who are not aligned will have to get in line or be left behind as Kendrick continues to reshape the culture.” He released this song the following month (September) after the Bazaar interview in August, by the way. He gave us his thoughts on the beef and the current state of hiphop. Atleast consider that. “Why reason with these niggas if they can't see the future first? Why argue with these clowns if the circus is well at work? Just walk that man down, that'll do everyone a solid It's love but tough love, sometimes gotta result in violence” “Influencers talk down 'cause I'm not with the basic shit But they don't hate me, they hate the man that I represent”

Dot did not give a all the way truthful answer when he told SZA the meaning behind the song They Not Like Us, as Elliot said the answer Kendrick gave was the Mr. Morale & Euphoria answer to the meaning behind the song. They Not Like Us was a song meaning is K. Dot was placing the red flag of victory over winning the rap battle between him and Drake and the people of his coast or city coming together in unity or uniting
@serenitymuszingsАй бұрын
@ Elliott did not have the space to tell Kendrick what his lyrics meant to him. Dot basically said it in a nutshell. This was for a women’s fashion magazine. This was not for The Source, XXL or Rolling Stone, where you would have that type of conversation. SZA was chosen for the interview bc she also is a prolific writer, as was the writer who wrote the intro. The mag issue was titled “The Writers” or something to that effect. So, the answer was more nuanced than what Hip Hop heads wanted to hear, which was more info about the beef.

He is saying that people who don't have morals, don't stand on business, and are instead pandering, are NOT LIKE US - "us" being people who have a strong moral compass and are not afraid to be fully themselves and aligned with their true values... Not sure what's so difficult to understand about that. I think it is so powerful. The whole battle for Kendrick was about rejecting inauthenticity and culturally corrupt behavior... and being brave enough to be who you are, as opposed to trying to be something you are not. AND it is great for him to be moving on from the battle. He did what he needed to do to defeat Drake and now he is continuing his journey as a human and I am so here for it!

Elliott’s “answer” (?) for Kendrick are all things that we witnessed based on his actions. Why do we need him to restate what we all literally saw…I honestly don’t think we need a post game interview. Read between the lines. Iykyk
