On this episode, part 1 of a two part breakdown, we discuss the timeline of the kendrick lamar vs drake beef from 2011 until the release of "First Person Shooter" which we think was an open declaration of rap war between the two GOATS of this era. This was a long-awaited rap beef and I think however you feel about who won, you gotta be happy about the music we got in the process.

Ya’ll forgot an important piece where Drake went on I think it was First Take w/ Mac Kellerman & Marcellus Wiley. Drake talk big sh!t about Kenny & how he was a better rapper etc but it never aired bc Drake said he wouldn’t host the ESPY’s if they aired that taped video. Unbeknownst to Drake Marcellus is from Compton so word got back to Top Dawg and Kenny on what Drake said in that interview after the Control verse where every other emcee understood it as friendly competition except for Drake that said Kendrick used “harsh words”.

Drake hated that Kendrick got the acceptance from the genre he always wanted. So then he tried to flip it like Kendrick is more accepted with the other folks than him (Grammy nods)…unfortunately for him Grammy nods isn’t what got Kendrick the ear of the people.

Realistically, if Kendrick responded to Cole’s diss, he looks bad. Because he bowed out. But he shouldn’t have released one if he was trying to maintain his peace. Drake has never made a cohesive album. His projects play like a compilation. If he can get 3-4 huge singles off one project it’s viewed as a classic. Where most past classics were more about the substance of the content. You’d often hear people say stuff like “we’ve never heard anyone do/say this”… Drake has turned it into look how many mainstream hits are on this album. Even w/ Jay you could look at a mainstream hit like “Hard Knock Life” and say “yeah, it’s commercial. But who’s sampling Annie right now?” That’s a part of what Drake’s career was missing once he left the “Drake with the melodies” “Marvin’s Room” Drake.

Drake being a hater is the whole problem. It clouded his judgement in this beef and is the reason for his downfall. If he’d have kept it cute and focused on Kendrick, this would’ve been close. I also thought that the reason Drake asked for the Kendrick feature is for public perception cause imagine if that info got out without this beef (which i still think drake wasn't expecting at all) the public opinion would've been on his side cause he "tried" to fix whatever issue between them and kendrick refused. It would've been a play on his nice guy persona and kendrick being a petty angry person.

When the battle started J Cole was the first to jump in the ring.. That tells me he is or believes what he says he says. Clearly he was told you think this is boxing bro it’s not it’s MMA so let us have 1v1.. I haven’t lost 1% of respect for J Cole. Cut it out and as we know now him and Kendrick spoke

This beef coming to a public head has really opened my eyes in the sense that I always thought it was like the unsaid rule and general consensus amongst hip hop/ black culture that kendrick was the actual new age king of hip hop and Drake was like the act as a stand in /fill in/cover/stand in basically like the substitute teacher as if Kendrick would birth a kid and go on maternity leave, yall know the classroom gets busy AF when the sub is in, damn near watching movies and running round the halls, barely staying on curriculum schedule and basically dumbing down a bit and just being given fun text books and computer time to keep up entertained and quiet and stop us from bothering the sub and asking too many questions..... iyk.....come to find out either its all Drake STANS [which are like mini hims ,ale or female in a lot of aspects] or a lot of people believed Drake was the best Rapper but i think they mistake that with overall artist... even though Drakes hits chart or otherwise should mostly be credited to his beats, as an original ORIGINAL GRASS ROOTS fan/supporter id go as far as saying 40% bars 60%beat but at most 50/50, his season 1 Aubrey was heavily carried by 40, though he had the artistic intelligence to know how to take the beat to the next level with the content he selected for each one [and im saying this, putting the ghost writing portion out of it]. ....It actuually makes me sad for him because he let this insecure Ego get so big that he allowed the industry and his "peers" lead him astray and have him fucked up, not to say some of his current character wasnt always there. iykyk Drake from early he's always been a bit of a c*cky, petty, childish boy but openly honest which made him endearing, and he walked up on the wrong nigha puffed up with J.Prince, money and Fan hype air in both his lungs only to get stabbed with a samurai sword in both

Sheeeeesh !!! Ppl did get disillusioned into thinking Drake was the best because he had built his stardom up outside of hiphop, but purely rapping and as an hiphop artist, it was never really in question of who was the best, it was about who was the biggest and letting numbers lead the conversation to support that claim.

I know I'm late lol I get what DJ is saying at 7:25 and all that, but idk if you guys heard what Coolee came out and said. He's in Kendrick's camp, and he had an interview saying a bunch of shit, including that Schoolboy Q tipped Cole off and told him that shit was about to go left. Idk how much stock people put into it, but if it's true, J Cole should be given more grace

looking back it was much more than that... the black panther album was a direct shot at drake almost everytime kendrick rapped. It was just so much to cover, it was hard to remember or touch on it all. peace king

That interview never came out. It wouldn’t have any bearings on the beef cause nobody knew. And that was 2014, beef started long before then.

34:31 Aubrey signed a $400m deal with umg that requires him to put out a certain number of albums within a certain timeframe…not sure of other details, but definitely a reason he needs to be out in peoples’ face all the time vs Kendrick with the industry having significantly less of a hold on his career/life (not to mention his deep songwriting- pen game out of this world) he can afford to take his time & write music when he wants, not when he’s told. Kendrick ain’t no slave to colonialism. Same with the comparison of Michael vs Prince…. Industry slave vs independent rebel

Dj drama is the one who exposed Drake ghostwriters because he backed doored him! So I think allot of people in the industry knew that’s why Kendrick was able to make that jab pre meek. Dj drama also told meek

Drake just been moving so slimy it seems. I remember him dissing drama in a song on some slick stuff. I didn’t know drama responded saying bruh had ghost writers

@@wearedecyphered drama started telling people about the ghostwriters because Drake had messed with his wife/fiancé and so Drake dissing in the song probably came as a response to drama telling everybody his business

I’m feel like people are putting J Cole in this box of being a sucker but I hate that they don’t realize he has a pen that could not be touched..A lot of people still can’t stand next to him(& nobody else was even trying to see him to battle before this because they were scared to)He wanted to be in the ‘Big 3’ because he felt that they were the metric to being the nicest in the game @ this time.He actually responded in a timely fashion & the song was not trash,it was his introduction to the battle & I appreciated his attempt to spar.An apology to his man was actually commendable but again the narrative that he can’t be in the ‘Big 3’ is insane. When u have a formidable opponent like Kendrick u have to give Cole his credit for even standing up to K Dot in the 1st place 💯✌🏾

I’m willing to meet you in the middle here. He kept saying he was the best and daring a worthy challenger. He got one, it just wasn’t who he’d be comfortable battling because they are real friends. I think Kendrick was prepared for friendly or murderous battles with both Cole n Drake. Aubrey made it about family and got obliterated. I think him and Cole would’ve been more like Black Friday. Both seeing who could rap the best while taking light jabs at each others careers.
