I would give Bekele the edge when it comes to kick/agility (which is partly why he was wr holder in track over Kipchoge). His form and body is really like a sprinter. In regards to running economy, I would give that to Kipchoge. Only a couple years younger, but his efficiency is what made him eventually become the world record holder in the marathon, still breaking records.

Bekele was 2 seconds short of Kipchige which means it was possible that he would have broken that record.

Tirunesh has/had a sprinters from the most of all the top distance runners I watched. Reason why she never did exceptionally well at the Marathon as devastating she was at the 5K and 10K. She had a pure sprinter's form with a non ending engine that doesn't tire. No one came close to her in the last lap. At the last lap Kenenisa and Tirunesh become like race horses that just got released at the gates.

"After a few hours of thinking"... Wel D*mned be the decades of research that has gone into it. We got Mr. 3 Hour Thinker here ;D Economy, Tenacity, and Finishing Kick are all important elements, but WHY he is efficient, WHY he is tenacious, and HOW he got his kick are more important to discuss. All criticism aside, Bekele was a monster. We will see if he regains form, but he struggles so much with injury in his older age. He talked about how he had to change his form going to the road to more of a heel-strike due to injuries and not being able to sustain his old mid/forefoot strike from the track. However, that change may have contribute to his recent injuries. I really hope he figures things out, but he has so much going on with his businesses and recovery that I don't see his elite career lasting too much longer.

Head bobbing left and right is exactly what he should be doing. Kipchoge and Farah do it too. What they are doing is moving their weight (which includes the head) over the landing foot; that is the most effective and efficient way of running distance at their pace. Check out the head-on shots of the 2019 London and Berlin marathons to see all three doing it.

Yes, tactical awareness give him an 8 or 9/10. He lost to Hischam El Guerouj (1500m runner) in 5000m at 2004 Athens, because he tried to take on a much faster runner over a last lap sprint
@TotalRunningProductions6 жыл бұрын
Erhardt Gerber That’s true. Tactical awareness is super important. He clearly had the endurance edge on El Guerrouj but, tactically he clearly gave that one up. Thanks foe the feedback.

Yeah he did a bit of a mistake there but Hicham was strong and bekele was young at the time. And he was tactically reallly good during his career. Anyway tactics is important in 800, 1500 mainly, others distance tactics is not very important
@oscarmaidana92946 жыл бұрын

Every time I see elite runners with close to underweight bodies, I wonder if they would be able to keep their running style with 10kg more on their belly. A lot of great short Ethiopians have almost an overexaggerated butt kick...almost looks like they their heels are touching their butt at every stride which gives them faster turnover without overstriding. It is almost the opposite of high knee lifts of elite sprinters. I was a 5'6" 120lbs as a Junior in HS and thought I was anorexic back in the 80s....I wish I had these guys to model when I was in HS back then.
