Hailes 12.44 in zurich remains as the greatest 5000m ever, yes it has been broken but he raised the bar by knocking 11 seconds of the wr. Absolutely stunning.

Good work on all of these analyses -- can we get you to do one on the great Aussie miler Herb Elliott? There's not a lot of footage on him, but his mile WR and his 1500m Olympic Gold are out there. Many consider him to be the greatest miler of all time.

Dear Commentator, if you think Haile was a good kicker but not the best kicker ever, then you haven't watched all his races. Watch the 1995 and 1995 10K world championship finishes. HG had all the weapons. He could produce blistering 150m speed at the end and blistering 500m speed at the end. This is why many peole consider his the greatest 10K runner ever.,
@TotalRunningProductions
@TotalRunningProductions 5 жыл бұрын
Definitely not going to disagree with you that he had an incredible finishing kick. One of the best ever without question. However, I think Bekele, at his prime, would be able to outlast Haile at his prime, not by much, but I think he just barely had him beat there. Also, and I know they're in separate racing categories (middle distance vs. longer distances) but El Guerouj certianly has a kick worth mentioning when it comes to jumping up to the 5k and potentially the 10k distance. I know El Guerrouj didn't actually compete in the 10k, but given his 7:23 3000 performance, and his amazing 2000 world record, which still stands, I think you could make a case for either El Guerrouj or Bekele (more likely imo) against Haile. Thanks for your comment, now I'm off to watch more of Haile's races to make sure I've got a complete picture of the Ethiopian all star.

@@TotalRunningProductions Are you in your early 20s? I grew up wacthing HG. His 500m sprint in 1997, took everyone by surprise and blew out minds as did his 1995 150m sprint.. You are right about Bekele, but their careers over lapped. When HG was at his best years, Bekele hadn't quite broken throught to the top. So we never really saw HG race Bekele when HG was at his best years. You compare HeG to HG . HeG didn't race HG, apart from the odd 1 or 2 races indoors. HG mainly did 5k and 10k where he broke the WR 3 times each. HG also broke outdoor WR at 3k and longer distances. HeG never broke a 5K WR. HeG was really a miler. it is odd you compare HG with HeG, as noone compared them in the 1990s, as they never really raced each other and they didn't race the same distances. HeG is more comparable to Seb Coe or Steve Ovett or STeve Cram or Jim Ryan, who were also milers. HeG had endurance, but he wasn't a 400m or 800m runner like Seb Coe was or Steve Ovett was. They ran 47/46 for 400m, 1.44/41 800m.. Ther is no data on HeG: I suspect his 400m best was 52. I thnk HeG could just maintain a 54 pace for 4 laps.

@@mathematics5573 I see your point, but I think you lost mine. My point was that, in the off chance that HeG did meet HG at, let's say the 5k distance, during each of their primes, it would have been interesting to see them both kick against each other. My main point of reference for mentioning HeG here was from the 2004 Olympics when he outkicked Bekele and Kipchoge and blew our minds with a double Gold. Obviously, in the bigger picture, Haile was the better 5k runner, as he was the world record holder for a significant amount of time, but I'm just commenting on how the kicks would have been interesting to see. Also, I believe that Haile broke the 5,000 meter world record 4 times, not 3. Also, to bring it all back, I do remember when HG was still beating Bekele, and yes, their careers never overlapped when they both were at their primes, so who knows, maybe Haile would have responded to Bekele if their primes overlapped. Thanks for your feedback, it's always interesting to get another perspective.

@@TotalRunningProductionsI agree if Bekele and HG had met at the peaks, it would have been very close races. But HG had a longer career and was more consistent than Bekele. So bekele would have challenge HG at times, but probably not always. Yes, HeG did beat Bekele in 2004 olynpics 5k, but Bekele was past his best years then. Kebele also won several Olympics golds at 5k or 10k. I forget. You suggest HeG could have challenged HG over 5k. When HG was at his best years, I think he would have beaten HeG. HG set many 5k WR. He ran faster than HeG ran for 5k, consistently.

Ummm, that thing he runs under at 15:30 is called the Brandenburg Gate. It's quite famous. As great as Gebrselassie was if you compare his run in Berlin to Kipchoge's 2018 run, by the time Haile passed through the Brandenberg Gate Eliud had already been finished for more than a minute.
