Nice Ken. I've got the ND 4, 8 and 16. Still think I need an ND32 for those super bright into the sun shots. Beautiful shots, that was a close call there it looked like!

Bunch of people hating on the comparisons, but I buy it. When you slow the shutter speed (ie using ND filter) you allow more light to hit the sensor. Im not "a photographer"...but I am the way we all are now a days. I film extensively for my business as an amateur and one day I changed my digital camera shutter speed to 30 fps instead of 60 because I wanted to be more efficient with the space I had left on a SD card. When I got home I was shocked to find the colors and saturation was far superior, and that wasn't even my intention. But after the fact it totally made sense. Don't ever believe either side of an internet debate. Just let it motivate you to go out and experiment for yourself. Then you can separate the haters from the players.

At 3:29 looks like you were VERY close to the top of that piece of equipment... If the cams on the Phantom had a method of changing the aperture the the ND filters could be done away with (except in specific timed exposure photography). A polarizer would be the only one I would use in that case. Definitely ordering some ND's for my new drone.

Another great video. I agree with Alexander. My heart skipped a beat at 3:28. :) When flying my P3P, I often tap on my screen in bright areas to readjust exposure for bright spots. In your video, I would have tapped on the bright clay to have it expose for that area. Seems to work well for me but do you think the exposure in this case was too bright for that to even work and you would HAVE to use an ND filter to get the exposure in range?
@KenHeron8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I just about wrecked on that machine. (Gulp.) It was MIGHTY bright that day. If I'd fiddled with the ISO a bit, I bet I could've gotten better non-filter results, but I wanted to demonstrate the difference between ND Filters and no filters, not auto-exposure VS filters. Y'know? --Thanks for the comment!

This earth is a better place because Ken Heron and his video-mates walk upon it. Through his videos, Ken gives us beauty, grace, hilarious humor, and a positivity which are, otherwise, malignantly lacking in the world today. Down below, there is a comment by some..........gentleman.........(I won't use his name but his own words can identify him for those interested in doing so) who is critical of Ken....using phrases like: "I just don't believe your comparisons" and "please stop spreading false information". I don't know the gentleman below...he may be a fine man, I have no idea. But I wonder if he is able to bring to our world, even a tenth of the goodness that Ken Heron does.

Thanks for the well explained video!!! But I still have a question, and I`ll be glad if can answer it... In the cenario that you installed you nd16 (or any other else actually) and you're taking your footage videos.... in the middle of your footage you want to take some photos.... does the ND will prevent to take a nice photo? or it's just a matter to set the best shutter speed? I'm just concerned that I may need to use like 60 on shutter speed and get blur images, if the mavic is not 100% stationary.... did you have the chance to test this scenario??? Thanks mate!!!! appreciate your help!!!!

May I ask what in camera settings you chose for these flights? So normal in camera settings? Goes to show why with ND filters, shooting in D-Log or similar can really be a waste, as you have to go in and edit so much after. This is a great example to me that a good set up in camera, can provide great image quality like this, with out having to color grade from a D-Log set up, just with ND filters. Do you use D-Log at all in some of your flights?

I set the ISO on the same setting for both, as to demonstrate the difference. What number I can't remember. Good idea on the flyaway video! I might do that.
@JB195047 жыл бұрын
I have read that the shutter speed should be double the frame rate, so that's why I shot in manual mode. I also heard 30 fps is usually best for a more cinematic look so I adjusted my shutter spped to 60. Also adjusted the aperture so it looked best on the screen. I was using an ND 8 on a really sunny day. I probably should have used an ND16.I did not touch the ISO, as I did not want noise. I think it defaults to 200. Of course I was not doing any comparison.

the nd filter gives you contrast in bright areas at the expense of turning shaded areas into pitch black. is a trade-off
@elanniroseadventures7 жыл бұрын
"filter reduces shutter speed".... this is true but if you are filming and not taking photos than your shutter speed should remain at a constant(2x the frames per second, i.e. if you are shooting 30fps, then your shutter needs to remain at 1/60).... the only changes that should be made in video settings is ISO and aperture.

well..I've watched many videos on nd filters usage..this is the best. Do you use automatic settings, add the ND8 filter if need it and shoot? or do you use manual and adjust ISO, etc to get the 2x rule? Also, I use "none" like you, but all people recommend D-log if you do color correction, I 've found I loose detail/sharpness ( mushy trees) in D-Log, what do you think?
@KenHeron8 жыл бұрын
I've had better luck with auto settings, but professional still photographers do like the D-Log. For the purposes of KZbin I'll stick with auto settings. I am too ADHD to spend hours color-correcting a video to death.
Hey Ken, are you on auto or manual settings for the ISO and shutter speed while you have the NDs on? thank you

@javierruizdeoz64108 жыл бұрын
Very nice video and demo, Ken. Congratulations. The music fits also perfectly to the grandiose landscape area. Just a question: I noticed that first flight with no ND filter was more at noon hours than the rest, showing long shadows already projecting over the terrain. Do you know if that first video was filmed with minimum ISO (i.e. 100) and maximum negative EV exposure to avoid at maximum the highlights? or maybe the light was so strong that even with these corrections the overexposure took place... I have just got the 6-pack PolarPro lenses (NDs plus polarizers) and after watching your video I am waiting anxiously to try them all! Thanks again for your work :-)
@KenHeron8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Javier! Yes, I used minimal ISO. I also returned to the pit when the shadows were longer and the sun was setting to accentuate the difference an ND Filter can give. Have fun with your filters!

Some filters may be too heavy, but I've never had a problem. Plus, I doubt Polar Pro would make a filter specifically for the Phantom without making sure it couldn't hurt it.

Hi Ken, what were your settings? just got the P4 and I'm getting a lot of jello like footage. Great video as always. Thanks
@KenHeron8 жыл бұрын
I shoot at 3840×2160 (4K) 30p. If you're getting the jello effect, you might to an auto-calibration on your gimbal. Also might consider an IMU calibration as well. (Be very careful doing this.)
@kirkchase50485 жыл бұрын
Im so dumb, got a random ND8 filter. slapped it on my Mav pro and took me a week to figure out the gimbal motor overload error...the filter would get stuck to the side of gimbal! Which of course lead to videoing the underside of the drone.....Make sure before you buy it says "can be installed before start up" !!!!!! I believe they are called "cinematic type" thin enough to miss the side of gimbal.
