Here after Ryan Garcia was knocked out with a liver shot. Like some people here, I have had one liver shot, and like the video says, I felt it. You don't feel a shot to the head until you wake up. Being conscious and having your body shut down sucks. I didn't know that the collapse is due to a natural defense mechanism to make sure blood is getting to the brain.

There was a soldier in the town where I currently live, who was in VietNam, and was shot in the liver , by friendlies....and lived for 28 days before dying. I was a medic in VietNam myself, worked in the Operating Room... Liver shots, by a gun can be and usually are lethal. Back in the old west days, the consensus was that you could survive 2+ weeks sometimes in pure agony. I had a patient who was shot in the neck survive over a week afterwards... only to die at a completely random time without any warning. He was supposed to be on the mend...

I have been training in MMA for over a decade, learning for personal improvement and self-defense. Me and my brother used to spar. He wanted to try the liver shot and I wanted to see what it felt like. It took a bit of figuring out what angle we had to come in from and he's strong but not a heavy hitter. But when he finally landed one, I had to sit down for a bit. I still felt that punch for a couple hours but I was ok. Tried again to see if I could power through his punch and I was able to after stumbling a bit and continuing on. I can only imagine what a punch from a stronger person or a professional fighter who knows what they're doing could feel like... After all, me and my brother are just a couple of numbnuts learning how to better kill each other and back the other guy up XD

And the worst part of it is, you're completely conscious and aware of everything. MileBird Nerfing the punches would cause a whole other set of problems because this is simply a matter or human vs human fights because most wild animals go for a sweet spot fang hit to the neck because it kills. This is simply a method to incapacitate. Humans overall would be nerfed. I think that it’d be much better to give +40% blunt force resistance to the liver, decrease the size of the liver’s hurtbox, or increase the size of the rib cage hurtbox to prevent this from becoming too overpowered.

I am a short guy 5’6, and I had been training at this mma gym for about 4-5 months. I was comfortable enough to spar and I also came with some martial arts background. Recently our coach was hiring a boxing coach for our boxing classes and the guys from his gym came to our sparring session. Because they trained pure boxing we were just allowed to punch (I came from a kick heavy martial arts, and even in full sparring I relied heavily on my kicks to keep distance). This 6’2 guy from the boxing gym asks me to spar with him, and me being a newbie thinking all fighters/boxers sparred in a controlled manner I said yes. Cue in this guy is trying to take my head off and my coach repeatedly tells him to not KO me as I was still pretty green and I was massively mismatched. Guy switched his strategy goes for a right hook, left glove touch which makes me automatically put my guard up and delivers the nastiest blow I’ve ever received in my life to the liver. It felt like an electric shock ran through my entire body, also I am a very proud person so even when other fighters land hard strikes by accident or on purpose I try not to flinch or collapse. But this was different, my body automatically went to the ground and I squirmed like a worm. My breathing got reseted. I always walked around thinking I was tough but that night after that incident I suddenly felt like a lion realizing he was truly a deer. It actually motivated me to train harder as I truly understood how vulnerable I really was. Anyways guy isn’t a douchebag just goes hard on sparring and I have avoided him like the plague afterwards.

Yup, I was knocked down only twice in amateur boxing, both times by left hooks to the liver during sparring. Never knocked down or even buzzed in competition. But having a hard head doesn't magically bestow a hard core and abs. Takes more work than most fighters realize. First guy to do that later became a world light welterweight champion, notorious for his vicious left hooks. Second guy was a young pro, with feints and tricky moves I hadn't seen in the amateurs. I learned from both. Mostly I learned to work harder on the core. I had only one coach who emphasized that, including the medicine ball, and building up to trading controlled body shots with sparring partners. But if you're not prepared to tighten up those abs and intercostal muscles a split second before the punch, that liver shot is gonna hurt anyone. Check out films of Sonny Liston training. In his peak he worked much harder than most boxers, including his core and neck. Muhammad Ali and James Toney didn't like hard abdominal work later in their careers, but they let sparring partners pound their bodies to toughen them up and deaden the nerves. It worked. Ali would often let opponents wear themselves out pounding his ribs, which never seemed to have any effect on Ali.

@@ballybunion9 , agreed. When I boxed amateur in the 1970s there was an unspoken but universally acknowledged agreement to go easy when sparring smaller or less experienced boxers. I always took it pretty easy on smaller sparring partners, and told them to go ahead with full power punches if they wanted to try a few hard shots. If you're a lightweight to welterweight sparring flyweights to featherweights, you realize pretty quickly how much difference there is in punching power and ability to take punches. One day in our city's main gym for training Golden Gloves boxers, the only other guy around was the state heavyweight champion. I asked if he wanted to spar, and I weighed only 135 at the time, although we were the same height, same reach. He took it very easy, barely touched me with head shots. But I got cocky and popped him a few times with hard jabs. Just to keep me in line he popped me once in the chest with a hard jab. Felt like my sternum was introduced to my spine. For the next year my sternum popped every time I took a deep breath or stretched. There's a reason why there's heavyweights... and everyone else. 😳

As a small guy who is left handed, I took advantage of this once. Being the little guy, I always was picked on. Some days I came home with blood all over my face which was my own blood. I was very angry about it so I wanted to learned how to stand up to these bullies. I knew I couldn't go toe to toe with them so I outsmarted them. One punch to the right upper quadrant of the abdomen just under the rib cage, one guy who was at least twice my size dropped like a ton of bricks. The others just stood there and went as white as ghosts. They never picked on me again.

My 14 year old nephew dropped me with a liver shot when we were toy fighting, he weighs no more than 40kg and I’m 110kg. Could hardly breath and felt ill for about 10 mins after it. Not a good overall experience😂
