Hi Ken Jee, thanks for the great content! I decided around March that I wanted to make a career change into data science and quickly realized it was going to take a lot longer than I originally thought. Although I have a degree in aerospace engineering I have been working in sales for the past 8 years so my technical skills weren't where they needed to be. Anyways, after doing some research I came to the conclusion that starting out in a data analyst role might be a more attainable path for me because of my lack of experience and that form there I could transition into data science once I have real world experience. My question for you is, do you believe entering the industry as a data analyst is a good way to do it? Also, do you have any tips for writing a good resume when you don't have experience? I have been taking online courses in SQL and Python and feel pretty proficient in SQL but not so much in Python, still need to work more on that. Thanks again for the great content, I appreciate the hard work you've put into sharing your knowledge.
@KenJee_ds4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching Alvaro! I think the data analyst role is one of the BEST ways to enter the field. For resume writing without much relevant experience, I recommend watching this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/poi5gmOsg5qon8k. I would also check out my resume review series. For the data analyst role, python is likely less important. I would try to learn one BI tool (Tableau or Power BI) and really double down on SQL. I hope this advice helps!

Depending on what country you live in, I almost always recommend finding a job if you can. Masters degrees are usually pretty expensive, and I think you can learn almost all the skills without them. On the other hand, If you are looking to get into data analytics, a maters in data science or computer science could be practical. I did my masters in computer science because I thought it was slightly more flexible. With this degree I could also land a job as a software engineer if I needed it. On the other hand, I had to be more selective with my electives and there were also some courses that were pretty useless for me to take. @@alexrodriguez2844 the csv has to be in the same folder as the python file. You also have to set the working directory to that file (google how to do this)

hey Ken Dodji here. Thanks for your approach of teaching DS. Do you think you can spend some time on how to manage files with github and the flow of working between git hub, shell commands, and the jupyter notebooks. Your series on working on data science projects from scratch is the best by the way. Thank you.
@KenJee_ds4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I can definitely spend some time on that. Honestly, the github stuff is an area that I need to improve upon a lot as well. I am glad you like the new series as well! Stay tuned for the next part coming on Friday!

Im now a junior majoring in finance. Can I still become a data scientist if I get a masters in business analytics or data science?
@KenJee_ds4 жыл бұрын
Yep! I would generally recommend working in industry first though. If you can find an opportunity as an analyst, you may be able to self study data science and avoid the need to pay for a degree.

Hello sir, I am doing Master in Computational and Data Science. I am currently learning some subjects like scientific computing, parallel computing, algorithm engineering, mathematics models for optimization problems. I want to know how important are these subjects in Data Science and Machine Learning because i want to deep into DS and Ml.

So I’ve been binge watching many of your videos, there’s not a lot of DS resources to begin with so first I wanna say thank u for putting stuff out there to help me. It’s like you’re my mentor. I have questions: Should I get a MS before getting a job or while I’m working? I’m a recent math major graduate, was planning to go to med school but then I wanted to do something in my field (math) and I learned about data science and I instantly knew, I’m doing DataQuest data science path, Do i even need a MS? Can you do a review of DataQuest? How much should I study a day? I’ve been studying 6-8 hours a day, after I finish my full time dead end job, just so I can get into a company I want and start being a data scientist. Rn I’m a beginner, just started in Feb, learned python, OOP, NumPy and Pandas and now I’m doing data aggregation and cleaning. Anyways, where can I practice? I feel like Kaggle is advanced for me and I feel like cheating if I don’t know how to do something and I look it up.

Thanks for watching my stuff! Glad you have found it helpful so far. Some thoughts: I don't think that you need a masters in ds if you are willing to put in the work (which it seems like you are). My best recommendation is to do as much project based learning as you can. That is the fastest way to get comfortable with the field. Also, having a portfolio of these projects is the best way to show employers that you are knowledgeable if you don't have data science work experience. I think that the amount of time you are studying each day is plenty. I would just make sure that you don't get burned out. I would dive right into kaggle even if you feel like it is too advanced. It is definitely not cheating if you have to look things up at first. Even now, I am constantly looking up how to implement different algorithms seeing how different people analyze the data that I am interested in. Data science is constantly changing, and googling/ stack overflow/ git research is a large part of the day to day work. I would look through as many kaggle kernels as you can of people who are performing well in the competitions there. You can learn a huge amount by following along. I hope this helps! -Ken

Ken Jee Thank you for a very helpful and thorough response! That makes sense, rn my plan is to get a job, at least even as a data analyst within the next 6 months. And ok that makes sense, I just felt super frustrated when I get stuck then look at the answer and there’s no way I could’ve thought of that because I didn’t even know such thing existed lol
@KenJee_ds4 жыл бұрын
@@rayojel3918 Totally fair. I will say that there is never really any true "answer" to data science problems. There is only the best approach that someone has found thus far. In theory we could make almost every model better if we kept working on it, but there is a point where the return on the model is not worth the extra effort put in. Not sure if that is helpful, but I hope it is haha
@rayojel39184 жыл бұрын
Ken Jee No yeah it’s differently helpful, thank you. I guess coming from a math background where you’re taught let’s say limits then u go apply them and if you’re stuck it’s probably because you didn’t study deeply enough to be able to do it. For this, it’s more that u can’t know everything in python so when I do look up, it’s a mix of “should I have known this method?” or “is this something I could’ve came up with without looking it up”, idk if that makes sense lol

Hey Ken, great video. Went through your linkedin profile and found that you've done your masters from Depaul University. I have been working as a Data Analyst for the past two years and was thinking of pursuing a graduate degree in the same university. Some questions.. 1. How do you rate the Ms in CS with Machine learning electives as compared to the Ms in Data Science program at Depaul university? 2. And what course do you suggest if I plan on being a data scientist 3 years down the line?
@KenJee_ds4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! I had a good experience at DePaul. I personally think that the Masters in CS opened more doors for me than the Masters in Predictive analytics would have. At DePaul, for the masters in CS you have access to the same classes as the data science students, but you can also learn much more about software engineering and programming concepts. I assume you would be planning to go back to school part time? (that is my general recommendation anyway). If this is the case, I would try to build out your project portfolio as much as possible. I would also start networking at the beginning of the program. You can do a ton of informational interviews as a student. If you do 1 a month over 3 years, you will have talked to 36 different people. I would imagine that at least one of them would hold the keys to a new data science role for you. Final note, if you are trying to pursue your masters in data science instead of CS, there are probably better schools than DePaul. I have had some friends the masters in predictive analytics at Northwester and the masters in Data Science at UVA (which are shorter) and have gotten really good jobs. I hope this helps!

@@KenJee_ds Thanks for the reply :) I think I will go ahead with the Masters in CS program option with ML specialization as I want to improve on my programming skills as well and try my luck with getting into UVA and Northwestern Data Science Programs. As I am coming from India to the US for my masters, I think I'll prefer the full time option and get done with the course in 15-18 months and then look for internship and job opportunities and try working on different portfolio projects. Informational interviews is something I am very excited about. Thanks again!
