I don't get why some people are asking if the combat is normally this "slow". Can't you read? It says it's a "demonstration" in the title, it's not a real duel... Also, to all trolls and critics of swordsmanship that keep talking smack in every video: Go and get a life, stop being jerks please. It looks like a very interesting and fascinating thing to practice in my opinion. Learn some manners, if you dislike such videos, go ahead and hit dislike and leave.

@BushiWaazup Traditionally the teacher (or higher ranked) will be the uchidachi (the losing side) and the student (or the lower ranked) will the shidachi (the winner). In many cases, the uchidachi is an aggressor and the shidachi has to respond to the incoming threat. Hence, a teacher would take up the role of uchidachi so to give students opportunity to practice the correct retaliatory actions and mindset.

@Antellus1 If you think this is simply ritualised and stylized you are right, you are looking at kata. But the whole point of kata is to train muscle memory, so that you can replicate the same moves in a real fight without needing to actually think about what needs to go where. This hyoho is actually quite fluid in the foot movements, and its not as anywhere near as rigid as most kata. Please practice it before commenting on youtube. Regards.

@ Gropeking: You cannot learn HNIR from videos. You may be able to ape the movements somewhat, but the subtleties of the techniques would be absent. You need someone with experience there to show you how to perform the waza correctly. Fortunately, it is one of the more accesible schools in the West. Travel to a seminar (there's usually one a year) and see for yourself what it's like. That is simply the only way short of moving to Japan and studying with Soke.

Kenjutsu is the practice of fighting with swords. "Ninjutsu" is kind of more an overall category of techniques like infiltration, sabotage, espionage, etc. There's "budo taijutsu" which is the martial art people associate with ninja, and it contains some kenjutsu. Ninja used the same weapons as samurai, after all. Long answer short; yes, budo taijutsu contains kenjutsu in addition to other things, but "ninjutsu" is a whole array of skills. @Antellus, this was how musashi taught it hundreds of years ago. Nothing was changed since the day musashi named his successor, that is why this belongs to Koryo meaning traditional. The Go Rin No Sho that you quoted from was it's battlefield application. in the dojo, the forms are practiced over and over again until it becomes muscle memory. the stiff forms that you are calling eventually become fluid and seamless in battle. ;)

@Taliaisfuckinghawt99 I could be wrong, but daisho doesnt mean katana/wakizashi. Literally translated, it means "long, short". Not all samurai/ronin had a combination of a katana and wakizashi. Some used a tanto or otanto in place of a wakizashi. In fact, unless the wakizashi's handle is exclusively 1 handed, its incredibly difficult to fight with a two-handed sword while another one is on your waist. Ive tried it. So I can only assume they either carried a tanto or a short wakizashi.

It's a damn shame, that the school would succumb to politics just like many other schools. This "Main branch" split from the other more recognized "Main branch". And it's a bigger shame that their headmaster would change the kata for no practical combat reason other than what he claims to be easier to teach. So much for keeping Musashi's school alive. Once again, people flush down important historical and cultural arts for politics. Gotta love humans. Musashi fanboys crying. :)
@liveware39268 жыл бұрын
Sorry, your language is a bit unclear. The one in the video appears to be Iwami-soke, who belongs to the "main" branch, but it is inappropriate to say they "split" from the "other main" when it is the "other main" (Gosho-ha) that "split" from them. The contention I think you are referring to is that Iwami-soke's predecessor, Imai-soke, modified and create kata for modern didatic reasons. To my knowledge the two branches have since reintegrated years ago. Or perhaps you are referring to one of the other branches/schisms that has cropped up since the 20th century?
@Darren_Tay8 жыл бұрын
What's unclear? You seemed to be understanding it well. People from the Iwami side are gonna claim main branch while students from the Kiyonaga side claim the same thing. From an outsiders point of view, they are both main branches split from politics. As far as I know it they haven't merged. I think you're referring to Yoshimochi Kiyoshi Soke merging the lines of 2 families. He is the son of Gosho Motoharu who taught Imai soke and also the recognized soke of the Kiyonaga family designated by Kiyonaga Fumiya Soke. The one who was supposed to succeed Imai Soke, was Kiyonaga Fumiya Soke, but he broke his promise to the Kiyonaga Family and chose Iwami Soke instead. Honestly, their politics is really complicated, you've to go read and do your research. There is the fight about the bokken in the temple and also Imai Soke declaring that there shall be 3 lines, but later claimed by Iwami Soke that Imai Soke retracted this decision. The best part about this was when 2 students, 1 from each side went to war on the forums. I just had to SMH. And let's not forget the 3rd branch in Taiwan which is generally not recognized as the main branch, but they run their own organization the way they see fit. Politics FTW? Btw you do know what didatic reasons are right? You just repeated what I said previously.

@LotusDragon09 Well, there is a LOT of blade contact in Medieval styles, but it's not pointless "bashing". It's counter-cutting into the opponent. If his sword gets in the way, we get what was called a "bind", usually edge to flat. From there you react to the opponent's pressure (or lack thereof) and use that against him. When the blades are in contact, the better swordsman has the greatest advantage. See here: /watch?v=HC5FIyfI8TA

Interesting how when I watch videos of western instructors teaching Japanese swordsmanship, it reminds me of a Hollywood movie. However, when I see a Japanese instructor teaching swordsmanship, I actually see Japanese swordsmanship. I try not to show disrespect, but it really makes me question the instructor's legitimacy when they do more shouting and sword on sword bashing than what they *should* be doing; cutting down your opponent as quickly as possible. McDojos really really bother me.

@DarvakSondrath Real kenjutsu is hard to find. Beware of anything that calls itself a "samurai school" or somesuch. A lot of schools don't advertise either... you will often have to make the effort to find them. But there's nothing "magical" about kenjutsu either. You could study Hungarian Military Sabre and learn a lot of the same stuff. Swordsmanship is universal... I study kenjutsu, battojutsu and German longsword... the similarities are very interesting.
@Kunstdesfechtens13 жыл бұрын
Good kenjutsu can be hard to find. You are better off finding a _reputable_ sword school of ANY style and train hard. Kendo and Iaido are easy to find in most cities. Classical Fencing or a good European longsword school would be good too. Even Judo would be very helpful. I travelled overseas for kenjutsu training, which many people aren't willing/able to do. If you're serious about it, do your research and you'll find something.

Sadly, dictionaries are written by people who do not typically know much about martial arts, so I might even say wikipedia is a better source on this; they've got a more exhaustive entry. Martial arts are not region-locked, To be considered a "martial art," one needs proof of a codified system of combat present in history, plenty of nations had this. German swordmasters sometimes referred to their art as "kunst des fechtens." This literally translates to "art of fighting," or, a "martial art."

Keep using it my friend. Kendo has far too many rules for its own good, and if expects to be considered a sword style at all, it had to adapt back to kenjutsu standards, at least keep the points, but do not lose the mindset. And ive asked my friend he says it is not a foul to step left and drop your sword to the right to let the enemy slide down it. So fear not, if you must use a kenjutsu parry to win in kendo do it, remember in sword fighting there are no rules even in kendo.
