Hi Ken, I`m a Dio fan. Love your reaction videos. I wanted to inform you that besides this 1986 tour, you`ll almost never hear Dio using that raw distortion you mentioned at 7:25 again. At the time, before 1984 his technique was on spot but between 1984-1986 Dio went hard with his usage of `not so perfect` distortion because he wanted to seem more aggressive on stage (I`m talking only about the live sessions ) It wasn`t healthy, Dio realized it too(you can hear his voice cracking a bit in this performance), therefore, he started using his former distortion - a little different placement, and a little less false cords vibration which made his technique immaculate once again So here are some examples of him at his best: Stargazer by Rainbow (Dio)(1976) All The Fools Sailed Away - Dio Gates Of Babylon - Rainbow (live) Rainbow In The Dark - Dio Heaven and Hell - Black Sabbath (live) Children Of The Sea - Black Sabbath (live\album record)
@juliocesaribanezdavila3448 Жыл бұрын
But then in 1993 he came back with tons of distortion in the strange highways tour😂
@Pervique Жыл бұрын
@@juliocesaribanezdavila3448 Hi, I appreciate your concern. listened to this record and I can assure you that his technique there is harmless(If used by him\someone that know how to support well their singing) first of all : placement of the distortion - is healthy, It`s backing down the vocals and there is a trade between distortion amount and chest voice (volume wise), In addition, the amplitude of the distortion is tiny(good) but there is a lot of it, which is again, healthy maintained vocals. All that because, if the amplitude is long and spiky, like in the 1986 tours, it will damage the voice = literally makes the false cords slap the vocal folds. Secondly: If you listen carefully, his distortion on Strange Highways is more "screamy" like(I mean death metal harsh vocals) and not as raw, damaging, badly implied. And on the 1986 tour he is using his soft palate to increase the distortion volume and not the voice volume (which mixed between false cords sound and rettle which is more the mucosa and the "Cuneiform cartilages" vibration. It could be done harmlessly only if you reduce the initial vocal folds vibration so there is enough place for the sound to occur without overloading your voice apparat. As we can clearly hear, he didn`t trade any of his volume for the distortion at that time) Hope I cleared the topic for you :) Sorry it`s too long Have a good one.

Yes, since it would have originally been recorded with equipment similar to what they would have used in the studio, it could with this remaster for Blu-ray take the sound up to CD quality, they also restored the video from the actual 16mm film that was originally used to film it.

NFL Films documented this show. The timeless clarity of the visuals make sense once you know that. They're very experienced at capturing great action. Film is the medium. If only the other bands used it to film their concerts instead of videotape, we'd have some real (reel?) classics. KISS Animalize Live and Ozzy Bark at the Moon, I'm talking to you (among others). Great review, BTW. Ronnie is still eliciting joy after all this time. He'll never be truly gone. Love it. Thanks.

Spinal Tap absolutely based the Stonehenge joke on Dio's incarnation w Black Sabbath. They had ordered some Stonehenge monuments as stage props for the tour, but when they were delivered and reconstructed, they were so large they couldn't fit through the doors and couldn't be shipped. They had to scrap the entire idea as they were days away from touring. Spinal Tap reversed the dimensions of the problem for the film.

Any footage of this quality from the 1980s was almost certainly shot on film. Film has a theoretically infinite resolution (since the image is captured by a chemical process), which is how we can get HD remasters now when HD didn't even exist then.
@Stefan- Жыл бұрын
Yes, it was shot on 16mm film and restored from that for Blu-Ray release a number of years ago.
@muzlee7479 Жыл бұрын
The reason why such old videos can be of high resolution is because those were recorded to actual film which has really high resolution. 4k from a 35mm film is easy and with better film even 8k is possible. If it would've been recorded to tape that would be a different story, that had really low quality.

Dio started back in the 50s-60s singing doo-wop -- check Ronnie Dio & the Prophets. Then in the late 60s and early 70s with rock band Elf. Elf opened for Deep Purple multiple times. Deep Purple guitarist basically formed Rainbow with the band Elf minus their guitarist. Then Black Sabbath in 1980-1981, then formed Dio with fellow Rainbow bassist Jimmy Bain (RIP) & fellow Black Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice, & guitarist Vivian Campbell who recorded 1 album with Foreigner singer Lou Gramm as Shadow King and then joined Def Leppard.
