Hey man, I just want you to know that 10 years after you posted this video, it came in clutch for me. Friday night I got home from a rough road trip & within minutes of coming in the door, my washer all of a sudden made the exact noise in your video. My wife said it was the first time it had done that, and it was the 7th laundry load of the day. I found your video, checked it out, and voila! I ordered the part & got it 2 days later, fixed it, and now it's back up and running. These old 90 Series Kenmore "scratch & dent" floor model washer & dryer have paid for themselves over & over for the past 25 years. Channels like yours give ordinary blue collar people the confidence and know-how to get under these things and fix them ourselves. Thank you.

So, I just found your video today (March 5, 2023) when I discovered that my Kenmore 80 wasn't spinning the water out, and none of the spin cycles work. Happy to have found your video. It's really straightforward and relatively easy to follow. I shared this with my better half so he can watch it and hopefully attempt to repair it sometime this week. Thank you for posting these helpful videos.

Thank you so much. I was going to buy a new transmission ($190) and now I just need a new coupler. Thanks to you. My washer, on spin cycle, was turming real slow while making an alarming noise. A repair shop sold me a clutch and said that if this doesn't work it's probably the transmission. I replace the clutch and it fixed nothing. I took everything apart and when I saw that the rubber part of my coupler was torn a bit. I research a found your video. OMG!!!! The plastic part of my coupler still looked like a round hole with two flat spot on it and it did turn the transmission when I used my fingers but when I took it out everything inside is rounded out except a tin place on top. I would have never find that out before it was too late. Thanks a million...

YOU JUST SAVED ME A TON of MONEY!!!!!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH! my washer did the same thing. before i seen this, i called to get an estimate to have it repaired. Everyone i talked to said it would be around 200 plus dollars with the service call, parts and repairs. They all said they were going to replace the motor even after i told them it was running. The only thing that was wrong was the motor coupler was broken not stripped out like yours. The holes in the rubber part were gouged out and twice the size! I found one at a parts store for 10$ us, watched your videos, and fixed it in 30 minutes. OH who ever is reading this, LEAVE THE PLASTIC HOSES ON THE MOTOR PART!!! you will see what i'm talking about. It still has water in it. i thought it would be easier to take it off and got water everywhere. OK once again thank you very much!!!

Thanks for the video, Bill! I had a problem with my Kenmore washer this morning, and the coupler had failed. It was not rounded out but one of the two plastic wheels in the coupler assembly had broken in several pieces. Replaced the coupler and all is well. One snag you might run into, however. When I removed the two metal clips from the water pump, the water pump would not come off. Upon closer inspection (thru one of the water hose ports) it was evident that the impeller was frozen to the electric motor shaft. I soaked it in penetrating oil and let it sit awhile, but it still won't come off. I suspect some rust jacking has taken place where the shaft sticks into the water pump impeller. Anyway...anyone here who encounters this same issue - and the water pump otherwise works and is not leaking - simply leave the water pump in place. Just disconnect the two hoses, and take out the motor and water pump as an assembly. Then you avoid breaking your water pump for no reason. Hope this helps anyone 👍
@jameskamps88072 жыл бұрын
I had the same issue with my washer, lol. I tried a couple of times to get the water pump to come off but then I left it on anyways but didn't disconnect the two hoses as they weren't really in the way. Both plastic wheels were both broken. I've just ordered a new coupler today, Should be good as new.

So I came to this site last summer (over a year ago) to replace my washer- it was a motor coupler issue. It worked beautifully! Well the part needed replacing, but since it was about 1.5 years I had to come back to this video.. it was quicker the second time around but I do have to say I was hoping the part would last longer than 1.5 years… my machine is about 21 years old and I couldn’t give up on her! I’m also a mom of 7 and it would kill me to buy a new washer for a $6 part and a couple hours of labor (hubby helped with the heavy part but my little hands were easier for reaching!) Thank you again for this video!! So hopeful and thorough!! 🙏🙏

This was EXACTLY the fix that we needed for our washer, thank you so much for posting it! We would have easily spent hundreds of dollars getting it fixed, or dragged the old one out and a new one in for no good reason. Everything went exactly as shown in this video and the cabinet video except that our motor straps had 1/4" bolts in them as well. We were able to get everything fixed without tipping the washer back, although that might have made things easier. Hardest parts were lining up the motor to get it back in and spinning the pump shaft to the right angle to fit back on the motor. Thanks again Bill!

I was thinking it wasn't worth trying to repair an 18-yr old washer, particularly since the horrible noise when it was trying to spin led me to believe it was probably the transmission. Then I decided to take a quick look online to see if there was a more common problem. Found your videos, took off the cabinet and motor quite easily, and sure enough it was the motor coupler. Thanks Bill. With a 14 month old baby in the house, cloth diapers needing washing, and not a lot of money to pay a technician, your video was a life saver. Everything worked just like you showed. Less than $20 for the part at an appliance shop down the road. I hope I can someday pay it forward by helping someone, too.

What if it only fails to spin after the rinse??? With mine the water drains but does not spin.

mine will wash and drain, but not spin. so I set it to the "drain and spin" cycle, and it seems to be fine for now... time will tell.

Thanks to your great video, I was able to repair my old Kenmore washer for just a few hours of time. Time mainly spent clearing the area around the washer to make some space to get at the motor. I took a gamble and ordered a coupler off of Amazon. What would have been a $7 part was free. It turns out I had been given a gift card by them, and the part arrived in two days. After getting the motor off, I could see that indeed, the coupler was toast. Odd in that mine was still fixed firmly on the shaft, but the plastic pins on the transmission side were completely sheared off, and my guess is that over time the rubber bushing had broken down, since there were tiny pieces of rubber all around the opening of the plate that the motor attaches to. Many thanks again, Bill, it's now back in business.!

Would this type fail be accompanied by a smell of rotten eggs/burning rubber and would it prevent manual turning of the tub?
@Jumpermon10 жыл бұрын
Checking back in here on this with the results of my own repair. The motor coupler was broken and the rubber disc degraded. This explains why the tub wouldn't spin as well as the smell. I replaced the coupler with one that had a metal insert for the motor and transmission shaft. So far, so good. Thanks for the how-to videos!

Bill, my kenmore washer will spin but is not spining all the water out of the clothes, what could it be, i check the coupler and it seem's to be ok but i did the test that you did on holding the cover switch down & changing the speed knob from slow to fast & it did not make any difference, sometimes when it gets to the spin cycle it will not spin & then the next time it will, i just don't get it. Thanks Butch

For anyone else who may read this comment at some point, you should consider looking at the timer knob. Look for videos fixing that. If the contacts within the timer knob are corroded, they won't always connect and send power to the right parts of your washer.

Great Video Bill. Many of the other videos I have seen show how to dissemble but do not show what a bad part (i.e., motor coupler) looks like. I am glad you showed that the motor coupler "looked" OK at first glance, but was actually damaged.
