I’m disabled and I’ve had these kinds of people try to “lay hands” on me. Usually I just walk away (well, I hobble away, lol.) but one time a few years ago we were at a Christmas party for my husband’s company. We were at a table with my husband’s boss and his wife. The wife was asking me about our family and pushing about why we only had one kid. “Well, I have several health issues and I’m infertile.” Long story short, she cornered me and went on and on about how sad it is that we only have one kid and “God is telling me that you’re meant to have more babies. I can just feel it.” Towards the end of the party she says “can I pray for you?” And I’m thinking she means in her nightly prayers at home or at worst in her Bible Study Group or Church on Sunday. So I say “Sure.” She suddenly grabs me and grips my upper arm with one hand and puts her other hand on my head. In a fairly loud voice she says, “Oh Lord! I ask that you heal your servant! Make her whole again! Feel her faith in you, oh lord! Take away this devilish evil disease that plagues her body and her womb! We ask that she may feel the joy of life growing within her once again, Lord! To know a woman’s purpose and joy on this Earth…” It went on. I just kind of froze in panic. I felt like I couldn’t be rude to her because it might affect my husband’s job, but at the same time, how fucking rude was she?! I also panicked because she’s just yelling all this personal and, frankly, traumatic shit out to this whole party and sometimes when I have a panic attack, I freeze and dissociate. When she was done with her prayer she smiled and said “there. You’ll be pregnant in no time.” My husband just glared at her and pulled me out of there without saying goodbye to anyone. At the next year’s Christmas party I found out the boss and her had gotten divorced in that year. He pulled me aside and apologized to me for her “poor and rude behavior” the previous year and apologized for not stepping in to stop her in the moment. So that was sweet.

My dad once served as a jury member on a pretty awful “faith healing” case where the family refused to get their kid medical assistance for an intestinal blockage, and relied solely on the power of prayer. It’s very treatable, but the kid died. My family’s Catholic, so Dad took the whole “freedom of religion” thing into consideration, but he was also (at the time of the trial) the father of two young children and voted the parents guilty of manslaughter and child neglect. It’s so frustrating how many desperate and gullible people buy into these delusions.

It’s so true about these types of people going after those with disabilities. I myself am blind and have a guide dog. I went to Berkeley for college perhaps maybe an unexpected place for people to think I would encounter this. I was minding my own business booking it through the main plaza leaving class going to my internship at the radio station. A group of three in van Jellicle‘s stopped me and asked if they could pray for me. I said I’m so sorry but I really need to run to work I’m running late. They would not take no for an answer and I thought OK I’m always down for a prayer even if I’m not religious it can’t harm. But I didn’t realize they were going to make this big scene the three of them instead of quietly just praying near me circled around me put their hands on me, and started praying for my vision to return. After a few minutes, the leader of them said do you feel different can you see now?! I was like no! But I do have to go now and I promptly ran off with my yellow lab. I think the irony of all the stuff is it’s pretty righteous of you to think that something is wrong with me and that God didn’t make me this way in his own vision for me. Again I’m not religious but I was raised Catholic and don’t practice anymore, but to just use their own ideology, God creates each of us as he sees fit and with a purpose so to be so righteous to think you have the power to undo gods will for me is ridiculous. My little two cents and all this.

@Dr.PicklePh.D.10 ай бұрын
@ChappyQuiddick-wz6ci Many blind people have a small enough amount of vision to see things at certain distances in high-contrast environments and are still legally blind. There are also many types of assistive devices, like screen readers and text to speech software. I have no idea what the original commenter's situation is, but I wouldn't be surprised if they used text-to-speech: see "in van Jellicle's" when I'm pretty sure they meant "evangelicals." That might've been an autocorrect error too, but it seems very much like it may be text-to-speech to me. I can't help but feel like I detect a bit of sarcasm in your comment, but I'm hoping that's not the case! It would be odd to accuse someone of faking a disability without good reason, so I'm assuming your question is genuine. So yeah! There's a lot of cool technology out there nowadays and blind folks have always been good at working with what they have regardless. :)

Woah this is the best synopsis of Copeland I have ever seen. I was dated a charismatic Christian in HS during the late 1970's. His family introduced me to Copeland. His records were beautiful. They took me to a 'healing' event in the state and I was touched by him on stage. This is ALL highly emotional and you believe whatever you make sense to you at the time. I haven't followed those teachings in decades. Copeland is off his rocker. The impromptu interview is proof. He looked like the face of EVIL when he pointed his finger in that reporter's face. She did a fabulous job maintaining composure and repeating her questions.

Kenneth Copeland was a big name in my evangelical house growing up, I recently brought up how problematic he is to my boomer parents and brought up the verse Mark 10:25 ( "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”) and they had no rebuttal and still support this trash. Wanted to add that my charismatic church ONLY used his children's curriculum in our children's ministry.
@greygryphon68813 жыл бұрын
The pastor at the church I was forced to go to as a teen tried to tell us that ACTUALLY, that verse refers to a name of a narrow gate in Jerusalem, so camels could go through, it was just hard. Sure, dude. Sure.

What’s the curriculum? I’m just curious.
@amycortez32893 жыл бұрын
Oooh! I wonder if his is the curriculum my parents used. My dad used to read some Fundie children's material every night before dinner, then the corresponding bible verses. Then said a very long prayer. Then dinner was cold. :/ The only lesson I really remember involved a disobedient child mistakenly putting rat poison on their toast instead of jam, and almost dying. All the lessons were like that. Very dramatic.
@astridquarry12483 жыл бұрын
@@greygryphon6881 I've heard that, too! But the point still stands - especially since I've heard it more expanded that for a camel to go through that passage, all baggage would have to be taken off, which means rich people need to let go of their wealth.
