You haven't seen anything until you've seen their 4-way cross. Best drill that supposed to require 2 people in the same spot at one time. It's amazing!

Not flag girls, those are the unit commanders and staff for the 6 company sized military units that comprise the two battalion sized units that are the band. The bugle is the symbol of US Light Infantry units. The band lives together all year in two dorms on the military Quad at Texas A&M, and all the band members are in the Cadet Corps. No music majors as a rule, the band first trains in their basic Corps training, the drills are designed by the students, each drill incorporating more complex military formations. The band has one of the largest travel budget of any major band in the United States, attending more games as a full band than almost any college in the US.

@@KennethKBBenson just after the earth started to cool.... the band admitted women 9 years after my class graduated, it was the last of the major corps units the school admitted women to, however was one of the first to be integrated racially. The band had a history of being a bit on the “rough side,” with much higher attrition rates than the rest of the Corps.

You asked about the song's name. It is "The Aggie War Hymn."

Greater than 300 members. Largest military band in the world. I am a graduate from class of ‘78. You definitely need to watch a video where they do the “impossible" cross. When the Drum Major yells before they march, he is saying, “Recall. Step out on Hullabaloo." Hullabaloo is the first word of the fight song. Must point out as did someone else, that the buglers are not "flag girls." While some women are on that line, many of the buglers are men. Yes, attend a game once the pandemic is over! The entire campus is worthy of a visit.

The band also gets a new drill for every home game, so they learn 6-7 drills every year. They put in a ton of work! Definitely recommend checking out the 4-way cross videos as recommended by some other comments. And as great as these are on video, nothing beats watching in person. The stands are packed during halftime bc everybody wants to stay to watch the band.

I’m an Aggie myself and I love the FTAB, but I gotta say it’s on my bucket list to go see those HBCU marching bands you shouted out. Southern’s Human Jukebox is just WILD

Not familiar with the Southern Human Jukebox thing. For 30 years been of the impression that Florida A&M has the best HBCU marching band. Have I missed something?

The *Fightin' Texas Aggie Band* is amazing. They are like 400+ strong led by three drum majors with no directors on the field. I have followed them for quite some time. Shout out to *KBThaDrummer* for giving them some shine on his channel. By the way, those are not "flag girls," they are mostly guys with a 1-2 ladies each season. I've only seen a female bass drummer once. Your narration is everything. Love your perspective. ETA: Subscribed to the channel to hear more of your reactions.

The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band makes up an entire major unit of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets as part of the university that carries the Senior Military College history. Each and every member of the band lives in dorms on the Quad with the rest of the Corps and wakes up at 5 am every day for physical training and takes a minimum of 3 semesters of ROTC classes. As a general rule, the band never spends more than 5 hours of rehearsal time on a drill. Rehearsal is from 7 am sharp to 8:30 am, and the first 30 minutes are always music rehearsal inside. The rigorous military training is part of what makes the band what it is. It ensures that everyone has a strong desire to be there and deliver nothing short of perfection and no dead weight of people not putting in the effort. It's honestly surprising how many of the other non-band cadets and the members of the University Bands (concert ensembles) don't really understand the extent of what we do. We exist in a limbo of being cadets who also serve the job of playing instruments for university functions and marching, and being members of the marching band that are also cadets.

Before the school decided to reduce the number of hours the band could spend practicing, the best years for complexities in drills kind of peaked in the late 80’s and early 90’s, right as video equipment started to come into its own. These more complex drills still can be seen, but they are conversions to video from 16 mm film. So, an example you can see on line is the 1991 Arkansas Drill. Goggle that one, do not put on full,screen, the video is a bit grainy, but one of the finest drills I think the band has ever done.

The most significant difference regarding the history of The Fightin' Texas Aggie Band came about in the middle 1980's, but you are correct: that Arkansas drill was AMAZING.

It takes more discipline and skills to do this than something that is natural. Every single person on the field has to be locked in or they would be noticed.

@davidbaker1069

Fightin’, not fighting. The bands name came from their method of selecting the drum majors and the fact the first student expelled from the A&M College for repeated brawling was “California” Morris, the bands Drum Major. The drum majors before WW2 were selected in a bare knuckles fight. The winner was the head drum major. Now the band votes for one drum major from each of the three major band formations, one from the combined bands, one from the Artillery and one from the Infantry bands. And A&M does not officially have a “Fight” song, it has the Aggie Wa Hymn, written based on the sounds of artillery fire experienced by “Pinky” Wilson in WWI, in the Argonne.

Yep. It takes a lot of daily practice and the show changes just about every week. It progressively gets more and more complex as the fish (Freshmen cadets) learn. All cadets are required to have been in High School marching band all four years and most aren’t accustomed to the military style drill, so they have to learn quickly. One wrong move and it would throw the whole thing off. It also helps that the upperclassmen put the “fear of God” in the fish. They know if they screw it up, they will pay dearly for it. All of that is in addition to the Corps of Cadets life and studies. So a lot of work goes into it and Aggies know that no matter how awful our football team is, they “never lose a halftime.”

In a perfect world Florida A&M comes to Texas A&M about every 5 years. Would be the best halftime show in the world twice a decade. (Ohio State would be matched up against Stanford or something)...

Check out Oklahoma State, UT, etc. There's NOTHING like The Fighting Texas Aggie Band. In 2nd Place is Ohio State (which is a ways away). On the other hand there are the HBCU bands. Florida A&M and around a dozen others. When college football is perfected (i.e. when it has a 16 team playoff) Texas A&M and texas will play on Thanksgiving home and home and Florida A&M will come to Kyle every year. ...
