girl im BEGGING you to do a Bad Movies And A Beat on this. the misogyny was 100% the reason it was poorly received, and that was the point! during advertising, it was carefully portrayed as a sexy "girl power" superhero film, specifically to garner the attention of misogynistic fantasy nerds, who were lured in with video game esque fight scenes with hot girls, but met with a literal sucker punch when they instead got a story about fighting a losing war against sexual abuse. theres a REASON you dont see babydoll dance!!! the only autonomy sweetpea has is the way she portrays her life, (both to the audience, and to herself, as shes struggling to come to terms w losing her personhood via lobotomy) so she depicts a caricature of the way her abusers see her- a weak, one dimensional, sexualized young girl: babydoll. she doesnt *let* us see her dance, because the dancing was a metaphor for her being abused by blue, it wasnt consentual, and its not for us to see. this movie is a thinkpiece about sexual objectification, and ppl HATEEEED it.

I liked SuckerPunch a lot! I actually remember renting it from RedBox (those were the days lol) The action scenes are fun and exciting, it's visually stunning, and the story is extremely deep and layered. Basically, my idea of a good time. The movie is a literal representation of escapism as a coping mechanism to extreme abuse. Just as the dancing in the brothel fantasy is how the girls survive, the fantasies themselves are how the girls survive the actual abuse they're experiencing in the real world from the men in the hospital/in their lives. It's one of those movies that, along the way at times it's like "ummmmm..." but by the time it ends you're like "ohhhhhhhh". I give it a strong 3.7 out of 5 stars.

While I do agree, I'm always prepared to give the costumes a bit of a pass because a) all of the costumes are modified dance clothes, which is a really clever touch, and b) they're actually wearing flats! (which, for all his faults, is something that's fairly consistent in Snyder movies)

But I remember being so engrossed and trying to find out what the different things in the movie meant. Also for a second viewing, I would watch the deleted scenes. There's two scenes that I believe makes the movie a bit more smoother for interpretation, and they probably deleted it to make the run time shorter.

Agreed, there's so much more to read into but I've hardly seen discourse about it - meanwhile if Christopher Nolan did something Russian Doll-esque with a male lead, it would have sooooo many theories and "did you catch these easter eggs?" discussions around it. I saw a comment on another Sucker Punch video (I had to go DIGGING to find other videos on it) where they interpreted it as an abstract/emotive portrayal of trauma and DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder), and how it's common for people with DID to have encountered intense trauma at a very young age. And theoretically, if the trauma is ongoing while the child's brain is still developing, their brain would learn to protect itself from intense danger that they can't cope with by "splitting" into different alters to handle some things, and forget or "shut off" memories of the danger to shelter the other alters in the system. The other commenter's theory was that Sweetpea and Babydoll are the same person. Sweetpea was actually the main host identity the entire time (that's why the story is revealed to be about her), and Baby Doll was actually the "protector" alter that would take over when Sweetpea was being assaulted, and that's why we see Babydoll fighting throughout and & even at the beginning, trying to protect her sister. The same sister that Sweetpea felt guilty for leaving behind is the sister she (as Baby Doll) accidentally killed but couldn't cope with that trauma either. I can't remember more details about which characters (out of the other dancers/fighters) were alters and what they represented, and it still gets sticky in trying to figure what's real, and I think that's what makes it feel a little messy to follow at times. Like if they were actually being assaulted in the mental institution, it would make sense to disassociate in those instances and escape through the fantasy world, where their sexuality is their only weapon for evading danger/escape, and the deeper world where they are fighting for their lives but being badasses while doing it, which is certainly easier to digest than the image and memory of repeated sexual/physical assault. But there's still so many layers, like if they were lobotomized, does that mean the ending with Sweetpea catching the bus and escaping is also metaphorical???? And just a cope for her character's otherwise intensely depressing ending??? Like there could be soooooo many interesting perspectives and hot takes and I love things that are open to interpretation like that, _specifically_ to see the variety of takes different people get out of it, but it didn't get that chance I guess, because it was way ahead of its time, and women led stories "couldn't" have nuance or layers or whatever 🙄 Deadass, Mr Robot (spoilers) explores similar themes of trauma and disassociation through an unreliable narrator and worlds within worlds that make you doubt reality - granted, it's still fairly underrated, but definitely gets more fan service than Sucker Punch, and I think gender is a part of that.
@jupitermelichios392
@jupitermelichios392 Жыл бұрын
I've seen a theory that it's a criticism of the failures of third wave feminism, and that's why the poc characters are the first to be caught, because it's about how the feminist movement in the 80s threw women of colour under the bus. And like, I don't think that was Snyder's intention, but the fact that you can make a pretty well supported arguement in favour of that theory is wild

So as a fan of the movie, I got so upset after watching the extend version cuz.. they cut so many chunks that actually do so much framing for the 3 layers of this story. And without them, it’s a bit of a whiplash between the layers. As well as lends itself to the theme of.. people might want to control and dictate your body, but they can’t dictate your mind and soul. I.e. the scene with the high roller that was cut and him wanting her consent. Which was actually just her choosing she wanted the lobotomy. why Blue was so upset when he wanted to assault Baby, cuz of her being catatonic and her “not being there anymore”. Your mind being the ultimate weapon against a world of adversity that may want to predate and harm you. And as someone who disassociates as a daily coping mechanism, it has a place in my heart for that message.

I really hope one day you can find and watch the R-rated extended cut!! It really adds a lot of context to the Doctor/Highroller and adds yet ANOTHER layer to the escapism Babydoll is trying to chase. It also puts the “Love is the Drug” sequence in the brothel world as Babydoll’s introduction to how Blue runs the place. That version has seriously cemented Sucker Punch as one of my favorite movies. Gotta love how the mere mention of female pleasure gave the movie its initial R-rating but all the fantasy hyper violence kept it at a PG-13 🤔

I guess I just always wondered that Babydoll was actually doing while "dancing". I get the girls were insane and being likely SA'ed but the dance instructor aka the therapist seemed to encourage Babydoll's dancing and if that mirrors the real world that means she was encouraging whatever she was doing distracting the guards/cook/etc. I use to think she was seizing or having a meltdown but I don't know anymore.

The movie is set in a time where fathers and husbands could just claim that the girls/women in their lives were "crazy," and they would be thrown into an institution. I loved this movie when I saw it in ~2012 on TV. During the height of the "not like other girls era" it was so nice to see a group of ultra feminine female leads that weren't in cartoon or anime form (nothing wrong with that btw). I feel like if this were made today, the girls would be villianized by many for using the only thing they have of value (their sexuality) to survive. Once female sexuality is used as a tool by the oppressed it may be seen as bad representation because her triumphs aren't earned the way a man would, so it's invalid. I also like that sex workers have more positive representation in this, from what I remember. I dont see any comic movies doing this since, femininity is still seen as inherently weak and nobody but the girls and gays understand camp (despite comics being campy in themselves).

It definitely gets better upon a second viewing, mostly because you’ve got an idea of what you’re going into and there’s plenty of depths to plumb themes and meanings from. I feel like it definitely suffered from badly done publicity, similar to Jennifer’s Body, where they just didn’t market it to the right demo. I also appreciated that while the girls do wear feminine and what could be called revealing outfits (that sparkly number at the end, LOVE that!) Snyder purposefully shoots them in superhero angles and not objectifying, similar to how Birds of Prey does. There’s a lot of commentary on nerd culture that I’ve seen backlash from the nerd community. But I think it’s really interesting that this is a big name cast (Oscar Isaac, Jon Hamm, Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jenna Malone) with a massive budget and amazing crew (Tyler Bates, Damon Caro, Rick Carter, Larry Fong) and it was kind of this subversive little pet project. There’s something about it that feels very intimate and indie (even with all the studio meddling), even though it’s definitely got major superhero sequences. I remember seeing the poster and thinking, “oh that looks fun!” but then seeing and hearing friends (male) and critics rip it to shreds… I wish I’d gone to see it anyway because it would’ve been so fun to see on a big screen. Absolutely would’ve cosplayed as Babydoll for Halloween!

I think the problem is any action or thriller with females is always dubbed as "over something". Whether it's over sexual, over campy, overly non sexual, etc. You can't win. Because realistically most action movies have the same sort of plots, they aren't special or particularly well acted. Sucker Punch is entertaining, visual pretty, and overall maybe a bit try hard in some of what it was trying to do and most importantly fun! You can speculate and make theories or just enjoy the chaos and either style of viewing is enjoyable!

Honestly I love Sucker Punch, is one of my favorite movies! I mean it has this "manga-ish " vibes but well compensated with the story and use of narrative. The fantasy aspect is of great importance in the movie plot since the main protagonist enters into this "fantasy mental state" in order to cope with the terrible moments of abuse that she and her friends suffered inside the corrupted facility, specially the horrors of sex trafficking and to control the fear in order to find the courage to complete the "missions" on their plan against the human trafficking criminal organization disguised as a social systematic legal institution. I don't see it as a super hero movie but more like sad tragedy and psychological thriller with epic fantasy actions scenes that increase accordingly to the risks for each of the "normal" objectives that they needed to achieved because of the environmental context and the circumstances at which the main protagonists were while maintaining the right situational awareness to succeed in their final goal, which consisted in at least one of them to escape the facility and against all odds, bring that criminal organization down by exposing the reality behind the mental institution to the public and the authorities, specially during the period of time in which the movie plot seems to be based. i kinda feel like everything being all over the place was to empathise the craziness, since they’re in a “looney ward”. The fantasies were all over the place and that was in her head…so would that mean her head is all over the place? her mind? she’s going crazy in there and then a lobotomy to finish it all off as “the end”. This all could be like that on purpose or maybe i’m thinking into it too much😭😭

The thing about this that didn't work for me was the fakeout about who the main character was. You spend the whole movie following Babydoll and being invested in her story and then, at the end, it goes ACTUALLY IT'S SWEETPEA'S STORY but it wasn't set up well and it left me feeling a little cold. Tragic endings can be satisfying I don't think this one was.

Watched this in Cinema when it first came out (my best friend and I were not prepared for the journey ) it was so good to me but there were characters I felt lacked something... the pain we felt when we got to see the real world she was in...ooo. I 100% wanted every single trash people involved to experience a living hell from which they could not escape. the ending didn't exactly give me that...

I wish more people understood that baby doll was not the main character. That would pretty quickly fix a lot of criticisms I’ve heard. Sweet Pea is the main character and all of the girls are parts of her psyche trying to overcome her life and trauma. Idk I just think people look way too much at the visually enticing surface and then refuse to look deeper because that would require actual thought. The movie isn’t perfect but it isn’t as bad as some might suggest. I enjoyed it for its exploration of trauma and healing/coping. 7/10 for me. Nice video!

Also if there’s one thing I know about Zack Snyder’s film making, is that he is a stickler for details. If something is in his film, it’s for a reason and he wants you to look at it with a critical eye. Just his style of art.

Yeah no. The main problem with this movie wasn’t that it was super trippy and convoluted (although that didn’t help anything), it was the logical conclusion of what was actually going on in the asylum, and Zack Snyder’s declaration that it was a female empowerment film. Side note: Maggie Mae Fish did a really enlightening deep dive on Zack Snyder and his Ayn Randian Libertarian views that’s worth a watch. Anyways I remember the trailer for this coming out on Apple Trailers (yes I’m old) and was pretty hyped for it. I loved comic books and manga, and it looked like a female lead fantasy adventure that would make popcorn taste better, so I was here for it. After having seeing the production I do believe it deserved all of its awards and ack-co-lades. The fight choreography, cinematography, and visual effects were all on point, but the actual film that was written by Zack Snyder and another white dude, directed by Zack Snyder, and produced by Zack Snyder, his wife, and 8 other white dudes has nothing to do with female empowerment. A big distinction between my take and yours, Kennie, is our definition of sex worker. These girls were locked up against their will and forced into sexual acts whether they were willing or not. So even if they’ve made the decision to just get it over with they truly lack the freedom to choose what to do with their bodies. And then on top of that their shared fantasy of liberation resembles typical male sex fantasies. Four conventionally attractive, coquettish, predominantly white women running around in all the cultural appropriation fantasizing about big guns and samurai zombies as they are being repeatedly raped. Hard pass. ( I was seriously confused what Baby Dolls big act was since her virginity was being sold, but my guy friends say she was still being sodymized (?) or just giving really amazing head as her big talent🤢)
@jm4050
@jm4050 Жыл бұрын
I also remember hearing the theory of the story actually being an illustrated fantasy of Sweet Pea's Post-Lobotomy, but it makes complete sense. Not only are both Sweet Pea and Baby Doll parallelled to one another in a variety of ways, like both of their sisters dying, both having scenes of sitting lonely on the bed, and Sweet Pea's act on the lobotomy table transitioning from Baby Dolls near the beginning of the movie, but the movie transitioning from Baby Doll to Sweet Pea makes the theory seem probable.

The movie is a mediation on coping mechanisms as internalized misogyny while acting as a social commentary on objectification in gaming and portrayals of women in Asian culture (baby dolls in sailor schoolgirl outfits). The coping mechanism of fantasy allows escapism from the women's battered and abused existence in a mental institution whilst subverting audience expectation by never showing sex, never showing sexy or burlesque style dancing, and indulging in bold gaming action porn. Interesting how this film came out a few years before Gamer Gate, n'est pas?

it’s like inception- a dream within a dream. why was it so hard for people to get that? i guess because that idea wasnt explained in the beginning to prepare you. however, it wasn’t difficult for me to understand that at the first viewing. anyway, i had an mk ultra phase at that time so i was very drawn to this movie, not only for the fantasy sequences, but also because of the underlying messages that were not thaaat hidden. i guess it’s not a movie for everyone, and i get that, but i really enjoyed the movie and continue to do

I adored this film as a child, even though I had no clue what was happening. I really liked the fantasy(?) scenes and I remember being sad when they had to sacrifice the baby dragon for their mission. We own the director's cut where they include that one scene where we see what Babydoll's final fantasy(?) was before being lobotomized. The one where the guy performing the lobotomy kinda seduces her. The scene after definitely wasn't, but it was portrayed as messed up as it should. I remember Sweet Pea and Rocket being my favorite characters. The movie's pretty sad and messed up and it impacted my childhood so much. Edit: ALSO THE SOUNDTRACK MADE MY SCENEKID WANNABE YOUNGER SELF SO HAPPY Edit 2: I'm rewatching clips now, I love this movie Edit 3: Oscar Isaac being cast as Poe messed with my head because Sucker Punch was the first movie I watched him in and he was a pretty messed up character. He sure can sing though.

If there's anything that I can give Snyder props for, it's that his films of this era is that they're just really visually stunning. If I wanna watch something that's a visual treat, I throw on Watchmen, or Sucker Punch, or 300. I personally enjoyed it way more than I thought I would. I was dragged along by a friend who had already seen it and we got out of the theatre going, "So, not bad, right?" I'm like, "yeah, not bad." It's not bad. It's not great, but it's not bad. There's a lot of good material in Sucker Punch that with the right workshopping and direction, it could have been a wonderful treat of a movie.

I've never known what to think of this movie conceptually but I find it entertaining in its own weird way. I always admire when a big(ish) budget movie has the balls to be a little out of the ordinary and/or "weird". The filmmakers stuck to their guns despite most likely being aware that they were working on something that probably wasn't all that "accessible" and therefore was quite a risk. It makes me believe that there was real passion there 😌

I try not to get angry at movies anymore, but that ending just pisses me the f off. Maybe cuz the movie bills itself so much as a female power fantasy & our poster girl gets her brains poked out without even entertaining the idea of fighting back. Even if she didn’t survive it would've been satisfying to see her go out swinging or poke the surgeon's eye out with his own instrument. But I think it’s more so that the topic of institutionalized abuse, both in the asylum & the brothel where the women are held prisoner, is not something to be taken lightly & it was not handled well here. (I feel like maybe if it were written & directed by a woman it would be a less frustrating watch.)

I have loved this movie since I was a child. I also loved Emily Browning in this because I think the focus with her being stoic was about the abuse from her stepfather being more than just physical but also s*xual so it would explain why that is the first step to her disassociating and how she is completely separate from her emotions because that's the only way she knows to survive. Growing up I always thought that the whole fantasy fight scenes were all about fighting inner demons to get the courage to take action. I don't know if that is just me just finding deeper meaning but I just completely loved it. I also love the fact that its different to other movies in terms of not having hero plot armor because it never made sense to me how a hero magically survives everything.

i watched this movie when it came out with my best friend from middle school. we came out loving it, obssessed even! it's continued to be a favorite of mine throughout the years. i know a lot of people give it flag for both being a snyder film and "failing" at being feminist, but i've never found it fails at it. a lot people seem to assume that things it gets right are coincidental or accidental but again, i don't find it to be the case. like i said, i became abit obsessed with it when i first watched it so sought out a lot of interviews and articles about it afterwards and he explicit said he made this movie for his daughter, his wife very much involved in it too, and the actresses mentioned having a lot of input in the development of their characcters while making the film and overall enjoying prepaing and filming the movie so much. is it perfect movie or story? no, absolutely not. it actually reminds me of what i felt like when i would play with my barbie dolls and i used to make up the most dramtic, out of this world stories where my family of barbies were actually running a family brothel underground, fucked up, i know, but it was also the stories i was watching in mexican telenovelas. this story feels so much like the wild imagination of someone not quite grounded in reality because both babydoll and sweet pea aren't exactly the most sane.
