30 years ago, I was living back with my parents with my 4 year old son. Left my husband of 10 years because he was doing drugs. My best friend called and say turn on Leno and watch Kenny Loggins right now. I did.....I was hysterically crying during this performance. Called my best friend back sobbing and she tells me “I wanted this song to make you feel strong, not sad.” I’ve loved Kenny ever since. Thanks for the soundtrack of my life albeit 30 years ago. My son has grown up to be a beautiful human being and my ex husband and I are best friends now ♥️

This song came out the year my husband told he wanted a divorce...after 18 years and 3 kids, I was devastated of course but there was no stopping him. Well, I did manage to forge ahead and raise my kids alone by choice for the next 10 plus years. Then at age 53 I met the Love Of My Life. Of course I was hesitant, leary and afraid to try again. But, 7 years later and kids all grown up with lives and families of their own, at age 60 we, my Eddie and me, got married. We are in our 70's now and life is so good. Message, never give up friends...Real Love Wins always. ❤😊

You give me hope. I'm turning 52 in a couple weeks. Haven't dated in years. I left my husband when I was 24. Never remarried, was proposed to a couple times, just never did it again. I haven't dated in probably 20 plus years. I don't even think about dating anymore.

My parents divorced when i was a year old, and this song hits me hard. This song helped me understand and appreciate my father even more. My mother was a nutjob and should have never been a mother to anyone. But my father somehow made life work and raised us well. I love him for that. Anyone calling Kenny out doesn't know his circumstances, and shouldn't judge so fast. Shame on you.

This is a beautiful but deeply sad and personal song. It was all over the media back in early 90's that Kenny Loggins devastated his wife and children by telling them he had fallen in love with another woman and was leaving his family. It was reported his wife was in a very bad mental state after that. Kenny received alot of backlash in the industry; which was long before social media BS. I felt so much hurt for his wife. It took me years to be able to listen to this song after that. I hope and pray his wife found peace of mind and was able to heal, move on and be happy. I never kept up with their story.

I got familiar with this album back in 1992 or so....my husband and I listened to it together and we both loved it. Well, shortly thereafter, my husband left me and our two young boys. (ages 3 and 1) He said that this song is what helped him realize that he had to leave. This song brought me pain for many years......sometimes it still does. It is a beautifully sad song, but life does go on.......

i heard this song from my elder sister's cassette when i was still in my teens. i did not know that 15 years later, it would help me make an important decision in my life, one which i must take. i left my wife because she is selfish, vindictive and abusive. i no longer had joy and energy inside me in my life, joy and energy which i could give to our children. so i left. now, i am able to continue working and send financial support to my children and meet with them every now and then.

elaine boothe This is the first time I've heard this song - I don't understand it - he did (IT) for you ? What is "IT" ? I assumed "IT" is either he didn't play out this phony thing (so he was REAL - like in the title) where he ACTED like everything was o.k. or the "IT" was staying together for the kid(s), and at least MODELING love the best he could, even though it may not have been deep and heart felt. I was always amazed he and Eva split - I knew neither of them, just loved his music - I know you can't judge a book by it's cover, but I don't see how you could write and sing like him and be a huge jackass - so it's weird they couldn't make it.

14 years of marriage, with plenty of trying and struggles, and half your fortune gone, sure doesn't sound like taking the easy way out. I think Kenny and his first wife are actually friends still. He had a benefit concert in Santa Barabara in 2004, in his hometown, and she was a guest of his, and he thanked her from the stage for being there on such an important and special night. Special guest Jimmy Messina played with him in what ended up being their first reunion in almost 30 years.

Always found this song haunting and beautifully done. But the lyrics have always troubled me anytime I’ve listened to it. And now after hearing the song’s backstory I feel it all the more. Everyone’s situation and circumstances are different. I’m making no judgments about anyone. I’ve had a very difficult marriage until recently. But the thought of leaving our kids because of it was unthinkable. He didn’t leave for them. He only left for him.

Agree. The integrity of the song is not up for judgement. In fact i completely agree with the lyrics "... never give up, never compromise on, that's the real thing you need in love..". I got married to a woman I never intended, only because she threatened suicide and stuff. After bleeding me dry of money from buying her designer bags jewellry and even my car, she slammed divorce papers on me, because i couldn't buy her stuff anymore. I compromised with myself, and i got slammed.

When this song came out I was in a bad marriage with a very damaged woman. I couldn’t put her back together, the more I tried the broken I became. I divorced, got custody of my daughter and there came a time I used this song to explain to her why her mom wasn’t around. Her mom is still, sadly, very broken, self destructive with a network of family who won’t help her. This song still destroys my defenses and chokes me up.

Full disclaimer : I think Kenny Loggins is an amazing. Song writer and singer one of the best ever! And I am a big fan of his. With that said this is one of the most selfish Self centered songs ever. I have been married over 16 years and have been a few times where I felt like this but I always looked at my kids and understood that their security was more important than my feelings. If there is no abuse, cheating,and there is mutual respect for each other, you owe it to your children to stick it out.... and feelings change over time(sometimes over a long time) but your kids are more important than your feelings at a low point in love! Marriage is work but with anything worth having the work is worth the Reward. Here is how I look at all big decisions: looking back on my life when I am 90 years old(God willing) will I be proud of the decisions I made?

@Eric Wiesen......" If there is no abuse, cheating, and there is mutual respect for each other, you owe it to your children to stick it out.... " ....None of us know the circumstances. Regardless, still not anyone else's place to judge, correct? I would not want my children to grow up with their parents together because we "owe" it to them "to stick it out". Happy parents are good parents, IMO. That said -- beautiful song, and not "selfish Self centered". We are all human and therefore, selfish. Our children need an example of parents who aren't faking it. You seem unhappy, btw. This song is an excellent impetus to possibly explore that. Life is shorter than we know.

I agree with you Eric even through all the other. It is thinking about how it will hurt others. Children, the community. That's love. Previous generations understood that. That's why we're here. But look at the results of what the others weighing in on this have done to both our children and society. No, folks. Eric is right about sticking it out and anything less is selfish
@Zanethepure
@Zanethepure 6 жыл бұрын
If I may throw my two cents in, My parents married after they found out I was going to happen, and kept it together all the way up to my father's passing just recently. Unfortunately (even though there was no abuse,cheating or anything like that) they were miserable together and never reconciled their differences. It's just my own personal opinion, but I would've preferred they had split on amicable terms and gone their own ways for the sake of them being happy, rather than being unhappy together and providing me with a very slanted impression of what relationships are supposed to be. They weren't in love, so their imitation was transparent, and although I appreciate the world of them for trying to make it work for my sake, it has done more harm than good. And now my poor mother has to deal with the aftermath of a youth spent in a loveless marriage trapped in a spiral of financial issues, instead of the life she might've found by finishing college and meeting someone she was compatible with. And my poor departed father might have had the chance to be happy enough with someone else that he would've taken better care of himself. Long story short, while it may seem selfish at the onset, if the parents can manage a healthy separation then I feel it's more beneficial to the children than forcing a poor marriage along the road. So I think Kenny absolutely did the right thing, and in time all wounds heal.

All of his songs are so beautiful to bad we don't have talent like that anymore. back then musical legends didn't have to use sex and gimmicks to sell their music. sheer talent!! glad Kenny's still around. don't even watch late night since Jay Leno was treated so badly. Even David Letterman who didn't like Leno cause leno got the tonight show. always said he was the funniest guy and even said that what they did to Leno was wrong. I wonder if thats why Letterman retired. before they put his head on the chopping block too. So sad When Conon o'Brian got the show he lost half the audience and first time tonight show history show was losing money. That why they they brought Jay Leno in to do stand up for half an hour before conan. He was never fired he quit and instead of admitting he sucked on tonight show. He demonized Leno. People like conan and Fallon are getting older and soon their heads will be on the chopping block too.

This song always hits home with me, as my daughter's name is Amanda. Of course I heard it after I knew me and my wife were going to get a divorce, so yes this song was written for me and her and still brings a tear to my eye.

I gave a CD of this song to my eldest daughter Sara when she turned 16. Explaining anything before that would have been impossible at her age.

Excellent song, I live with that situation today. I can understand Kennys point of view. I get very emotional when I listen to this song. My kids are my life & I would do anything to show them love. I would not want my kids to witness the pain of dealing with my broken relationship with their mom.

@scammett You're welcome. Glad someone can appreciate it as much as I did since the songs on this album came out back in '91, the same day of this performance.
