Hey Ken, several years ago I took a scroll saw class at a local Woodcraft store. The project chosen was based on an intarsia pattern of a carnation which seemed impossible due to so many small parts. As you suggested, we started in the center and worked our way out. Something they had us do that you may consider next rose, was setting the table of the saw to three degrees. By doing this it added some dimension as we cut. The one thing that was crucial, you had to cut every piece from the same direction. It turned out... eh ok but there were a lot of dirty words coming out of everyone's mouths (including mine). I've wanted to try it again and maybe the rose pattern would be a better choice. As always, thank you for another great show Ken!

As I stated in the video Dennis, it was a rookie move for me to cut from the outside and I don't know why I did that. I've done these roses for years and never cut from the outside. I like your idea of the angled cut. I may have to try it on a rose and see how it goes. Maybe it's worth visiting on a future show. Thanks for tuning in this week and for chiming in with your story and your suggestion. It's appreciated.

Once again, with no intension of ever cutting a rose, I watched because I always get something from your videos. This time it was keeping a newspaper around to hold patterns while spaying adhesive. Also I have had a sandpaper cleaning block around for years to use on my belt/disc sander but have never thought to use it on my Dremel drums. Also, I may just try cutting a rose too. If anyone is looking at purchasing a Dremel, they might want to check out Harbor Freight's 1/4 hp rotary tool. I've used both (including a Dremel with the extension rotary handle), and the HF one and its included variable speed footswitch wins hands-down. At only about $50 (including a spare set of brushes), I now realize I should've bought one sooner.

@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings Жыл бұрын
This project, while it looks complicated, is excellent for a newcomer to scrolling because it isn't so important that you follow the lines of the rose perfectly. If you deviate from the shape of the petal a little, who's gonna know? Give this one a try. It's small and even if it messes up, you will have wasted next to nothing and gained experience to make your second attempt a success. I'd love to see your version of this project. Thanks for tuning in to the show this week.

On the center part... I would have made a snail shell shape in the middle. I have a master carver and a Foredom but when I have to do really tight fixes my go to is a simple engraver. it's like holding a pencil so you have more control. Another option is also to use a wood burner to give it more depth to the contour. This guy does awesome work and it's simple enough to do a lot of things to it.

Very nice. The "3rd dimension" work really made the rose pop. I wonder whether a "4th dimension" could be added by subtly reducing the height of the peddles starting on the outside and working progressively inward to give the rose a slightly convex shape. On sanding, per a class I took, I've several sanding sticks by gluing sand paper to 1/4 inch plywood in various widths. They are a bit flexible and I bet sticks 1/4-3/8" wide might make edge sanding easier.
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings Жыл бұрын
I've wondered about that next dimension as well and another viewer suggested cutting the pieces on a slight angle to allow them to to sit in the way you described. Great idea on the sanding sticks. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with your thoughts.

It's always a good idea to number each part. I number the master copy before making the working copy. After the parts are cut with the working copy, I transfer the number to the bottom of the piece. If the work gets accidentally scambled, it can be reassembled by following the numbers on the master copy.

Hey Ken! My wife was a Veteran of the United States Navy and I intend to make a display case for her flag out of some 3”X 3” cedar I have. I think the rose on it would look great. Any suggestions on working with cedar such as glue and finish? Thanks for the great videos Ken!
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings Жыл бұрын
Cedar is a pretty forgiving wood to use Franks but it is also fragile so you will want to be careful with the smaller parts. Any wood glue will work perfectly with cedar as the glues are not species specific. As for the finish, cedar looks great with a regular varnish applied to it. It really brings out the colour of the cedar and only looks better and better as it ages. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show. I'd love to see your project when it's done.

It is a crepe block and they are available at most woodworking suppliers and even on amazon. Here's a link. www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/supplies/sanding/accessories/20192-crepe-blocks I hope it helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

There are no plans. As I stated in the video, I just used a "rose line drawing" that I found by searching it on google. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.

It's not a crate block but rather a crepe block and it is used to clean sanding belts and discs. You can get them at most woodworking suppliers and even amazon sells them. Here's a link. www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/tools/supplies/sanding/accessories/20192-crepe-blocks I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

Hi Ken I reading injoyed this one, I had an idea to help with glue up what if since you have all the pieces in the main block of wood could you tape across the face of the pieces then flip over the block and using ca glue just glue the bottoms possibly using tooth pics around the outside cut to tighten up the pieces, just an idea let me know what you think.

Whatever method works Larry. I've never tried your method but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I may have to try it some time. Thanks for tuning in to the show and for chiming in with your suggestion. I love it.

How About Using A Rotary Tool With A Spiral Saw Blade To Cut It Out To Cut
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings Жыл бұрын
You could, but the problem with that, is the amount of material that is lost due to the kerf of the spiral cutting rotary tool blade. The pieces of the rose would never fit back together properly. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in.

If you mess up and start on the outside... Use painters tape to hold it together and just keep going. Some projects are too tight to drill a hole.
