I grew up outside of Pittsburgh and Kennywood is my favorite park by far. The classic coasters and historic rides make it special. Also it is one of those parks that come to life after dark. Everything lights up. It is just so beautiful. Riding the Thunderbolt at night is the best. And the fries are the best late in the season.

The creepy Old Mill (Garfield ride) was always the spot for couples to have some alone time. The Garfield switch killed the vibe.

Krista Roman I visited the park for the first time yesterday (loved it!), and when I rode this ride all I could think of was what a disaster the re-theming choice was. Garfield was already well out of date when they chose it, and the Garfield ride is fairly lame, even for children. I can’t wait until they accept their blunder and attempt to reinstate some version of the historic Old Mill ride.

I hated when it became Garfield. It was so much better as the old mill and yes that's where couples could have time alone. That's so funny! I haven't been here in a few years. I miss it. Used to go every year

As a native Pittsburgher, its nice to see your videos on Kennywood and see you enjoy your time there. I moved away from Pittsburgh about 5 years ago and every summer, I miss being at Kennywood. I fill my park void by going to Disney World 8-10 times a year, but its so much different than the small park feel of Kennywood.

Thanks so much for your review of Kennywood. It's my "home park." I grew up about 20 minutes from Kennywood and went 4-5 times every summer. When I visit my family who still live in the area they know I'm really only there for Kennywood. It's hard to pick my favorite ride because I love every ride in the park. That said, I love Phantoms Revenge, Thunderbolt, Racer and Jack Rabbit. The Exterminator us fun too, filled with so many surprises even though it's a mouser. Got to admit, though, as silly as it sounds the Kangaroo is still one of my absolute favorite rides at Kennywood. Most people don't know this about The Kangaroo but if you sit alone in the car and move to the "inside" of the seat before the hill, the gravity of the hill with swing you to the "outside" seat and you can pop high enough to the touch the tree with your hand every time you go around. Give it a try. And on the Racer you can shake hands with the person in the other train at several points in the ride. Just make sure you let go. Great review!

I am 13 and from Pittsburgh. Anyways, every time my family goes on our yearly trip to Kennywood after we pass over that hill and you begin to see the rides, as well as driving pass the rides and signs I almost start to tear up. Kennywood is my favorite place on this earth to be, and my friends and I are going this summer together. I promise you even if you aren’t a thrill seeker, you will not regret going to this park.

I lived in Pittsburgh for 30 years and always loved Kennywood. I live in a city that has many attractions but none are as enjoyable as Kennywood. I hope that owners and management keep the small-town feel. That's what keeps many people coming back 😊

I practically grew up there. I experienced my first time riding a coaster there. Kennywood will always have a special place in my heart. My favorite coaster has to be the phantom's revenge. My favorite dark ride has to be ghostwood estate. I do miss the old turn pike though. Loved it when I was young. But the sky coaster is still pretty good! I would recommend for anyone to bring their family here!

I briefly lived in Northern WV, so I went to Kennywood in 1984 when I was 10. I got the People weekly list of top 10 roller coasters in the world that year and set out to ride as many as possible. The Thunderbolt was on the list and it didn't disappoint. Still one of my favorites. I also loved the racer and Jackrabbit fiercely. Haven't been in over 20 years. Would love to go back sometime. I haven't ridden at least half of their current coasters.

Really great review. I am from Pitt and have been to Kennywood too many times to remember. But I liked your review because it reminded me the things about the park I take for granted. We never brought food but I forgot you can still do that. The food is awesome there. Its very classic and clean. But the biggest perk is the price. I think you can ride all day for $26!!!!

I have only lived in Pittsburgh for 6 years and have been to this amazing park a lot. This is one of the most unique parks out there. My favorite ride is the Phantoms Revenge and I highly recommend this coaster if you are just visiting the park for the first time. The food there is amazing and you should hit the Golden Nugget Ice cream at the end of the day for a tasty treat.

On Phantom's Revenge going around the turn to the last airtime hills i caught a 100 dollar bill in my hands while they were up. Thunderbolt was a fun expirence and i got my cousin on it and he was crying after it and the potato patch is awesome.

Just returned to the park after an almost 20 year gap. Glad to see it was still holding strong. The Old Mill has been restored, what a classic dark ride. Phantom is still a knee shaking hyper with the river dive through the Thunderbolt. The old woodies are still classic and I also realized Kennywood might be home of the double-down. Phantom and Jack Rabbit both have one.

I live like six miles away from this place. About to make my tenth visit there. THIS PARK IS AWESOME. I’ve been to Cedar point and Hershey Park as a coaster enthusiast, but at those parks, you don’t get the atmosphere and the homey feel like I get at kennywood. Maybe it’s just my home park tho. ALSO, NOT A SINGLE RIDE WITH OVER THE SHOULDER RESTRAINTS! LAP BAR!!!!!!

I've been there like either every year since I was about 10. Every visit is still exciting and I'm never bored. One down side now as of 2019, was they "modernized" the classic penny arcade. Switching to cards that make all the games for expensive. It's basically that 1 credit is about 50 cents rather than 25 cents, so every game is about double the price it was from 2018 and before. They also removed about half of their old retro games.

Steel Curtain is open, Garfield’s Nightmare is the Old Mill again, Bayern Kurve, Paratroopers, Volcano, and the Kangaroo have all sadly been taken out and will be replaced. Here's a unique Kennywood memory. I'm a volunteer firefighter and we were called for a search detail. Someone from the town over was reported missing. Someone called 911 and said they might have saw them in the park. (They were later found close to their home) This was during the Fright Nights Halloween event. We walked through each jointed haunted house (most of them were open at the time). We were there from about 10pm to 3-4 am. During a regroup a few of us were able to take a nap in the tunnel. Something not many can say.

Kennywood has been compared to Tivoli. It's a beautiful park with lots of shade trees, beautiful flowers and amazing landscaping. You can sit on the many benches to people watch, sit and eat or just take a break. Old Kennywood is a throwback to the parks such as Tivoli and the history of Kennywood as a Trolley Picnic Park. Many days are "ethnic" days such as Italian Day, German Day, etc. Schools from around the area have their school picnics here. You can also bring your own food and set up in one of the many pavilions or picnic tables. There is also a nice lake in the middle of the park and a performing stage by the lake. Lots of live entertainment too. If someone tells you, "Hey, Kennywood's open!", that means your fly is down LOL. The coasters are award winners and Kennywood tries to keep up with the times. There's so much to do at Kennywood for the young and the old. You won't find another park like it and it's a place where memories are made.

Although, Kennywood is not the oldest park in the US, I would have to say, it held onto it's history better than any other park I've been to. Cedar Point is older, but, you would be hard pressed to find an attraction built before 1960.

What with the dual coaster, the 'old mill' type attraction and the Noah's Ark, the park that Kennywood most historically matches (in content , not park location-type) is Blackpool Pleasure Beach in Lancashire, England. In fact, Kennywood is sweetly mentioned on several plaques in the Blackpool park for being one of the very few other places to have those attractions. As for a wild mouse, that's a bit of a sore point with some at Blackpool now as Blackpool recently demolished their classic outdoor Wild Mouse, after around 60 years of operation, to build the Icon steel coaster. (alas, Blackpool's historical crown jewel, an ambitious 1930s modernist masterpiece Funhouse by proper architect Joseph Emberton, was strangely destroyed by fire in the 1990s, leaving just the maniacal clown standing outside in its glass case. Ironically (unsympathetically?) the park built a water ride with fire elements in it, Valhalla, as replacement - popular, a one off, but also kind of big and dumb. Blackpool itself is a fascinating place, with the Eiffel Tower top style Blackpool Tower and entertainment inside, (including a cicus, ballroom and other attractions) , trams down the huge seafront, 3 piers, and the Winter Gardens labyrinthian complex of music / theatre halls and fantastic period themed rooms like the inside of a ship). However , Lightwater Valley in North Yorkshire (home to the world's second longest, once longest, rollercoaster in length - and also in time - around 6 minutes, partly because of its deliberately slow hill lift and large amount of available surrounding countryside) contains a dark ride Scwarzkopf Wildcat coaster, formerly called The Rat with rat shaped cars and accessed via an authentic sewer type tunnel with rat noises. Now called Raptor Attack and being a bit 'Jurassic Park', it now has more standard 'mine cart' trains.

***** Make sure you ride Voyage. Greatest woodie ever made IMO. Raven is a former #1 wooden coaster, and Legend is not too bad. And Thunderbird, the steelie (B&M Wing Coaster to be exact), is great in its own right. I agree with you on that "classic" wood coaster. Though these days, wooden coasters have been taken to the extreme with RMC redefining the wood coaster with loops and corkscrews, something unheard of on woodies back in the day.
@PerroV
@PerroV 8 жыл бұрын
***** RMC is a company that makes these redefined woodies (New Texas Giant, Twisted Colossus, etc). It isn't the name of an actual coaster. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. But I see what you're saying. Out of that list you mentioned, I have only ridden El Toro. Beast is on my bucket list, though.

Kennywood is my home park. It is enjoyable but I wouldn't go out of my way to visit if I didn't already live near Pittsburgh. The Phantom's Revenge is one of my favorite coasters and their classic wood coasters are a lot of fun even though they aren't crazy fast. I actually don't like their new dark rides. I liked them better when they were the Old Mill (now Garfield's Nightmare) and the Gold Rusher (now Ghostwood Estate). I used to ride the old ones every time I visited, now I just skip the new ones. Nice review!

This is a great park. Once a year a friend and I go for a day. Also many schools in the area have a Kennywood picnic.

The Log Jammer is underrated. Pretty much a water coaster.

Krista Roman the log jammers out. Just a dirt field there now. Personally I didn’t like it. I never really got wet on it. I don’t know what they’re gunna do with it now. Even with me working there I still don’t know what’s going there. One of the original owners know though and they seem very excited so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what goes there.

small corection on the thunderbolt the partner needed rule is actully because someone died because they stood up while on the chain hill also you say they capture the oldtime amusment park look and feel thats because it is all the old buildings rides and architecture was built during the time it looks like it came out of very little changes there mainly because none wants it to change

I live about 15 minutes from it. I actually am currently working at the steel mill across the river so it’s kinda interesting. Kennywood has always been somewhere I went in the summer but always wished I was a cedar point lol. I’d much rather drive the 4 hours to cedar point or the 5 hours to the six flags in New Jersey. Kennywood will never be the big, steel roller coaster filled destination I crave. I am hoping they will RMC the thunderbolt though, after recently riding steel Vengance at cedar point, I think all wood coasters should be renovated into hybrids. So much fun

The coolest thing about the Thunderbolt is that the last drop is actually the biggest drop on the whole ride. I think it's the only coaster in the world like this, and is part of why I think Thunderbolt is the best paced coaster I've ever been on, it starts out awesome and only gets better to the grand finale. Most coasters start with their climax, not Thunderbolt.

They have removed many of their family rides... I don't know if they did it to deal with covid times... but they also have a new coaster -- the steel curtain --- which is partnered with the NFL/Steelers. I'd say it'd be worth revisiting in a few years to see how things change
