Obi-Wan and Anakin's story is basically that of an older sibling trying to step up when the parents die, despite not being prepared for that level of responsibility. There's a story in _From A Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back,_ titled "There is Always Another" that explores Obi-Wan's thoughts and regrets around what happened to Anakin. It involves things like Obi-Wan waking up in the middle of the night to find Anakin huddled up on the floor of his room because he's absolutely terrified that he's going to lose Obi-Wan like he lost Shmi and he lost Qui-Gon, or Obi-Wan realising that Anakin definitely doesn't know how to swim and panicking over how he's going to teach a nine year old how to swim, and having to reassure Anakin that no, Mace _doesn't_ hate him, Mace scowls like that at everyone. Guy was like, 19 and suddenly had a traumatised nine year old with a freshly-deactivated bomb in his skull dropped on him, as his first ever apprentice.

He was never under the impression that he wasn’t at fault for what happened. Although the rest of the council played a huge role in Anakin’s downfall Obi-Wan was complicit when he could’ve done better. Obi Wan wasn't the right master for Anakin, but I wouldn't go as far as to say he was the worst. The actual worst probably would have been Ki Adi Mundi. Dooku would have been perfect for Anakin had he not turned to the dark side, he would be strict enough to keep Anakin on task, but would also relate to Anakin's frustrations about the Jedi Council and encourage Anakin to think for himself in a healthier way. When you take the Jedi and Sith, the Force’s spirituality and political mechanizations out of the equation… Anakin and Obi-Wan basically fought one another because they were both caught up in the other’s selfishness. Anakin obviously was selfish for prioritizing Padme’s wellbeing over the bigger picture stakes, while Obi-Wan stuck to his staunch Jedi loyalty, ignoring what Anakin needed. Lucas pointed out thematically through all the 6 movies he’s been involved in that selfishness is the root of all conflict in Star Wars (even Padme says it in ROTS - “this war represents a failure to listen”). Because the Jedi Council didn’t allow for proper dialogue at all with Anakin or to let Obi-Wan and Anakin have a proper dialogue… it’s what led to its own downfall and Anakin being alienated to the dark side. Fitting almost that Anakin and Obi-Wan’s friendship ended in flames in a planet representing hell for their respective selfishness. Remember too when Owen said to Luke “I don’t think he exists anymore. He died about same time as your father?” He wasn’t wrong! Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi died on Mustafar… metaphorically speaking. They physically survived but something else emerged from that hell.

In the books between episodes 1-2 at 14yo Anakin is very emotionally intelligent. almost always thinking about how he feels and why he feels it. But the Jedi gas his head up so much by episode 2 he's just confused. Obi wan always tells him to focus on the mission but will turn around and go on a side quest that usually derails the main objective while Anakin just wants to help anyone he can. Obi wan comes off as indifferent towards how Anakin's feelings and gets easily distracted while anakin is trying to confess that he wants to save his mother. And Anakin feels like he can't tell anyone until he reunites with padme. Anakin gets written off by fans as one dimensional and emotionally when he's actually very thoughtful and complex

@YNWALfC0516 күн бұрын
You are right about Obi Wan failing Anakin as a mentor in a lot of ways, particularly about the mentorship from Palpatine. Qui Gon would have definitely knocked that on the head straight away as he wouldn't want Anakin to become politically influenced like the other Jedi and would have focused him on being compassionate to the people of the Republic and in need, not the overall picture. The one part you are wrong about I think, is Obi Wan fighting Anakin at the end. Obi Wan saw the devastation Anakin had caused in the Jedi Temple afterwards and saw him killing the younglings on the recordings. And then once he sees Anakin again, he watches him force choke Padme, his wife, his pregnant wife, the one person who Obi Wan knew meant just as much to Anakin as his own mother. To Obi Wan, he couldn't lie to himself anymore than he did over the years about Anakin's dark side, he was witnessing it for himself first hand. Anakin could not be reasoned with at that point, he was full Sith. If Obi Wan didn't defeat or slow Anakin down by crippling him, Anakin would be go on to be far worse as a Sith than he did. If you notice as well, Anakin never listens to Obi Wan throughout the prequels, always disobeying him until he chokes Padme. At that point Obi Wan was ready to put his apprentice in his place properly like always should have done and if he had done it years ago when things where not as bad he might have prevented Anakin's fall.

They also didn’t do anything about the slave trade in the Outer Rim, which could’ve saved Anakin’s mother and prevented the most major incident contributing to Anakin’s fall. This actually pairs pretty well with the fact that Anakin himself was thrown into a similar situation with Ahsoka, a prodigy student herself. Anakin helped push Ahsoka and treated her more like a sister than a student, allowing her to make mistakes and even be in charge of situations that Anakin likely feels would’ve worked out better if Obi Wan let him take charge. Anakin even shows no qualms about bringing her into combat. Anakin always felt Obi Wan and the Jedi Council were holding him back (they were) and with Ahsoka he even pushes her to the extreme to make sure she can have that opportunity to grow without it costing her life. Anakin’s shortcomings were being unable to let her go and that his expectations for her were set unreasonably high. All and all though, he turned out to be a pretty bad student but surprisingly a very good teacher

Glad you flagged the moment when ObiWan committed to killing Anakin. You’ll notice he ignited his light saber first. It was only then Anakin responded in kind. Despite the fact he thought Padme betrayed him and ObiWan was there to kill him (which he was) he still didn’t lift his blade against his master until the last moment. Anikan should have been trained by a master like plo koon. Plo koon showed compassion and could let the loss go if it was the will of the force he was a balances between saber fighter and force user and he was experienced. How obi wan failed Anikan was he was to inexperienced to train him mostly do to stuff the video explained and more. There was obi Wan know how emotional Anikan was and how loyal he was but then still asked him to spy on the chancellor witch was his friend and a mentor. It would be like asking Anikan to spy on Obi-Wan. Why would the council have him do this that is one reason why when on mustifar when he say from his point of view the jedi are the bad guys he was right from his existence with how the jedi where acting. Think about it they put him on the council but not give him the rank of master, witch is unheard of and a slap to the face to Anikan, then pretty much in same meeting ask him to spy on the chancellor who is a friend and how do they expect him to act. Then they expell his Padawan for something she didn't do but when they asked her to return they didn't even give her a proper apology or say we are wrong to have blamed u. Then u had other masters that could have help Anikan in trouble times but they didn't. Yoda for example knowing Anikan background still just tells him to let go of attachment when he tells him about his visions. Force visions where nothing new they had techniques to help understand and to help control them but the strongest force user goes to the second strongest for guidance and is just told to let go instead of listen to him and guiding him by teaching him how to control his visions. So yes i agree Obi-Wan failed as master and so did others and with a good master i think Anikan would have been better master or trained snd treated better by some jedi master he would have turned out different

the thing about Obi-wan is that he had no clue what he was doing. and so he defaulted to Jedi dogma, trying to mold Anakin to fit the standard Jedi template instead of being knowledgeable/experienced enough to adjust that template to fit his student. remember he was freshly knighted when he took on a padawan who hadn't gone through the standard initiate training and conditioning before even being considered as a padawan. he was in no way qualified to teach and mentor the single most complicated and unique Jedi to have entered temple training in a millennia. one could make an argument that NO Jedi of the PT era was qualified to properly hone Anakin's talents given how far he fell outside the norm, except that several named Jedi of that era have been demonstrated to be more aware, empathetic, and frankly kinder to Anakin's strengths and weaknesses than Obi-wan ever was. Plo Koon and Depa Bilaba to name just two. heck, even Dooku would have been a better choice (which might have resulted in both saving the other from Palpatine's corrupting influence - or at the very least could have channeled their combined talents in more productive and reform minded ways for the galaxy as a whole, which even if it didn't result in them remaining Jedi would have kept them from the Sith). Luminara Unduli stands as a conscious exception to this list, and I think it's noteworthy that Bariss Offee ALSO Falls as a result of her teaching. it's clear that following jedi dogma too strictly, without the master knowing where or how to soften it as needed for the development of their student, results in said student breaking under the strain. that would be bad enough on its own. but Obi-wan consciously and deliberately hacked at the bonds of trust between him and Anakin, until any chance of trust and support between them were completely obliterated. failing to heed Anakin's visions about his mother - when it's made clear that Ahsoka can ALSO see the future in her dreams, taking this from "inexplicable event powered by Anakin's singular force talents" to "known and understood jedi ability that Obi-wan is deliberately stifling". reprimanding Anakin in public in front of "clients"(which results in Padme HERSELF humiliating Anakin in front of Queen Jamilla). making it clear he didn't trust Anakin's decisions on his mission with Padme. denigrating Anakin behind his back to Yoda and Mace Windu. the entire Reko Hardeen affair. Ahsoka's expulsion and exile. those are just a few examples. time and time again Obi-wan not only failed to have Anakin's back and put him down at every opportunity, but he deliberately set him up to fail. that's not even getting into the fact that he let a politician (who was also a sith lord) have unrestricted, private access to his young student. obi-wan HATES politics and politicians in general so why did he do that? it's not like he sees any value in networking or in having political connections. even in our world that ALONE would raise significant eyebrows and cause questions to be raised. yet obi-wan not only didn't care, he tried to USE said connection for the Jedi order's benefit while going against the VERY TENANTS of the order to do so and somehow didn't suspect that it would backfire in the slightest? and no, Obi-wan, you cannot fob off responsibility for unpleasant/unpopular decisions TO the Council when you yourself are *ON* said council!!!

Yoda TOLD Obi to kill Anakin! Obi didn't want to fight Anakin, but he wasn't powerful enough to face Sidious. Obi tried to reason with Anakin before the fight, and he spent most of the duel on defense. Ur take isn't well-supported by the record.
@HectorCotto9714 күн бұрын
Objection hearsay. You say he tried to reason with him but really all he did was play an Uno Reverse card on Anakin's claim on him turning Padme against him and taking her away from him. What he did wasn't really reason with him, all he did was point fingers at Anakin which obviously isn't going to help the situation at all. After Anakin does his new empire speech Obi-Wan doesn't really say anything to talk down Anakin, he basically does a weak argument to defend himself before he entirely gives up on talking and decides to slowly reach for his lightsaber to initiate a fight. That's another thing, it wasn't Dark Side Anakin who started the conflict between them, it was the Negotiator himself who did it.

Crazy part, is the Jedi had a better option to train Anakin. But for some reason they gave the task to obi wan. I say this all the time windu would of been a great master for Anakin. They had a lot of things in common. Both became unbelievably powerful during the Clone wars both had inner darkness. Both enjoyed combat, but unfortunately windu & obi wan both represented every thing wrong with Jedi as a organization. Windu was in love with the republic & obi wan was in love with the Jedi code, both flawed entities. No to mention both windu & obi wan were jealous of Anakin potential. Ultimately Anakin fall could of been easily prevented If Jedi wasn’t such victims of there own arrogance & hubris.

This is a bit of an exaggeration. Obi Wan wasn't a bad mentor for Anakin. Sure Obi Wan wasn't a perfect teacher and Anakin wasn't a perfect student either. I think Obi Wan was a good teacher. He did the best he could. He just was not ready to train someone like Anakin. Obi Wan at least trained Anakin to be a powerful warrior. Anakin was one of the best generals in the Clone Wars and helped the Republic win a lot of major victories. Sure Obi Wan was too loyal to the Jedi Code and was dogmatic. At the very least, he never told the Jedi Counsel Anakin's marriage to Padme. He at least cared about Anakin's feelings for Padme. I mainly blame Palpatine and the Jedi Council as the biggest factors to Anakin's fall to the Dark side.
@magnis3807 күн бұрын
Regardless, this was a stepping stone to everything. Qui-gon's death, the jedi order itself, bad wisdom from Yoda, being beaten from obi wan on Mustafar, Palpatine was an even worse mentor than obi wan. Palpatine was pure torture to Vader in many ways. Obi wan admitted his faults but sidious? Obi-Wan was by the book type. I think Obi-Wan was a product of the times he was from. Ultimately, Sidious was the worst one.

This is an interesting take. Obi Wan did exactly and said exactly more than likely what every other master would have. Anakin wanted so badly to be a Jedi but when the reality of it wasn’t what he glorified he wanted to push back against it and change it in a way that favored him. I’ve had this experience with people who love Asian culture particularly in my home country. Foreigners love the aesthetic and the traditions. Only to realize that not every tradition is something they applaud or would like to practice. The Jedi order or a culture, when you entrench yourself in it. There is no take what you want and leave out all the rest. It’s not a shopping mall. Obi Wan was inexperienced but in that sense, he let his teachings and dedication make up for that experience. Was Anakin the only Jedi with trauma that he was told to suppress because emotions are bad? Was he the only prodigy pilot or combatant? No. Was he the only one with a bad mentor? No. He was just the chosen one he turned to the dark side like many other Jedi have and would have in his position. Problem? He was the chosen one. That’s the only difference. It’s also that when a man chokes his pregnant wife because of arrogance and paranoia, there is no turning him back to the fold. There is no talking it out, it’s do or die.

Obi Wan was a horrible choice. He had immense responsibility thrusted on him. With Anakins immense potential and turbuolent emotions Anakin should in my opinion had 2-3 experienced masters covering different areas to ensure he fulfills his purpose and doesnt fall to the dark. Windu and Anya Kuro .....although they were failing the order due to their preoccupation with rules and codes they were the best since Qui Gonn was gone. They would have instilled intense discipline early on...that arrogance would have LONG been corrected. Windu or Anya Kuro would have forced him to face his inner demons head on

"Maybe Qui-Gon would've been what Anakin needed." Well, I wonder why Shiev wanted Qui Gon dead, eh? Sidious must've felt the shift in the force with Anakin's emergence. He wanted Anakin trained, wanted him honed, but with access to groom him into his apprentice from the get go. Yes, Obi Wan was the wrong choice to train Anakin, but his path to darkness was always INSIDE HIM. Maybe some "therapy" and constant attention maybe helped. But would anyone have stopped Anakin from trying to save his mother (who, apparently, Dooku arranged to be captured by the Tuskens)? Could they've stopped his possessive and controlling nature? Maybe a more emotionally mature teacher could've explained the difference between selfless love that is willing to let people go and to make sacrifice, and selfish love that wanted to possess and hold onto poeple, and control their fate to the Nth degree. The Jedi couldn't spot Shiev so didn't understand how dangerous his relationship with Ani was. Huge FAIL.

honestly, it was worse than what you said. Obi Wan chastised Anakin for killing a terrorist while Obi Wan was willing to let him blow up innocents to prefer his code of not killing. He sometimes did war crimes but he expected people to abide by his code. And when it came to it, he chose to leave him burning alive rather than mercy killing him. That is horrible. Not only did he allow him to continue killing people if he lived, but if he died he had to suffer horrendously.

Good video thou I would say obi wan just told him to not worry about his feelings. I think it’s mostly just the inexperience as a mentor. Not only that but the war didn’t help. Hard to mentor when all hand are on deck and also think he did try to bring anakin back but tensions were already so high and anakin was ready to go , not listening to reason thinking everyone turn on him. I do agree that leaving him to burn was cruel and maybe if he tried to save him things would be different but I also can’t imagine the pain and wanting to leave. I think obi wan was trying to let him grow and make his own decisions , especially with padme. Unfortunately the war and the emperor in his ear didn’t allow that chance. Side note I honestly think plo koon would have been a better fit. And still good video and these are just my opinions.

This is what i dont get. Anakin being the chosen one and having the highest power level/ force potentially should of been handled by a far more experienced teacher. Like you said, obi-wan was good and tired his best but was way out of his depth. He just became a knight and had average-slightly above average potential and skill at the time and he even admits it in episode 3 that anakin has surpassed him and is a far greater jedi in power and skill. Anakin being essentially force Jesus's should of been trained by yoda,mace or other top tier jedi masters. Yoda was the most qualified person alive being the most powerful jedi at the time would know the dangers of someone powerful like anakin going down the wrong path and is also the only one strong enough to train anakin and keep him humble for awhile as anakins growth rate let him surpass the other masters and made his arrogance grow.

Ok, so you accuse obi wan of not understanding Anakin since Anakin was not recruited young like other Jedi. A good argument indeed. But on the contrary, how is someone like obiwan, or any Jedi, as a matter of fact, suppose to understand that, when the experience of Anakin is totally foreign to them as well.

@powerowl2120 lol 😂 they kinda know how he feels and believe it's wrong to feel that way. They're literally taught not to feel that way since childhood. It's the core of their world view. So honestly, except they isolate themselves from the Jedi order for a long time and interact with normal people, I don't think you should expect much from people who are essentially living in an echo chamber. Even in real life, people in echo chambers can't even begin to phantom the perspective of the other side, unless they constantly expose themselves to it.

as a former teacher and youth minister who has worked with many youth, I see numerous truths in your presentation! I learned that to be a good mentor is to be aware of my own shortcomings and to insure that others were involved in the youth's lives so that no one depended on me or my example alone. I think that the entire Jedi Order is responsible for the rise of Vader. Star Wars seems so relevant due to our current troubles in American political parties. America is the Old Republic turning into the Empire. I don't lay all the blame on Trump either. It's a much larger problem than Biden, Trump, or any single leader--the whole system is the issue.

1:06 See, here's the problem. Obi-wan is not 'well meaning but flawed'; he's the poster child for a traditional dogmatic jedi. Obi-Wan Kenobi is the White Bread of the jedi order, as straight laced and vanilla as they come when he finished maturing. I otherwise agree with your argument, but yeah, the problem is that Obi-Wan wasn't a great mentor FOR ANAKIN, not a bad jedi in general. That said, I don't necessarily think Obi-wan was a great teacher in general because of his lack of teaching experience and his inflexibility.

It's true that he wasn't the best Master for Anakin still he loved him and did the best he could do. At Mustafar there was no other way it could have gone Luke did it 30 years later when Vader already had already lost everything "It is to let for me my son". He had betrayed the Jedi,Obi-Wan and everything he swore to protect he had committed genocide killed children and was truly at that moment irredeemable. Padme who loved him more than Obi wan saw the monster he had become and rejected him. Yes the Jedi had lost their way they became soulless monks. Obi wan was partly responsible the main culprit was Palpatine he had planned everything he was grooming Anakin from the start and he also did it in a way that seemed like he really cared for him while in reality he didn't. And of course Anakin he was an idiot he could have been the hero if he took Palpatine into custody the moment he told him inform the Senate and the Jedi even if his marriage was leaked and he was expelled I don't think he would be unhappy that he could really be with Padme without restrictions but as I said he didn't want to give up anything that can't work

We really complaining that Kenobi took out his lightsaber against the guy that just the day before was murdering a bunch of children? Pretty sure you lose the right to being scolded and move right on to being maimed by your master for using his teachings that improperly. There was a lot of slaves that mothers got murdered by tusken raiders in the star wars universe that didn't decided to overthrow the government and purge a religious organization.

(Sorry for the long comment but it has a satisfying answer) I've said that many times throughout the years and friends of mine said I was nuts for saying Obi-Wan was not the right master for Anakin. We were all in agreement that Qui-Gon was the best but in disagreement with who would have been the best replacement and I got called nuts for who I thought and even with reasoning I was still looked at as border line dumb according to my friends. To me good replacements would have been either Shaak Ti or Plo Koon but there was a much better replacement in my eyes let's see who agrees with me, if you look at Obi-Wan, Anakin and Ahoska you see a jedi too loyal to the code, a warrior with good intentions but falls to the darkside and jedi that says fuck the code follow the living force. Now what jedi trio is that a mirror of you may ask well you have Yoda who was too loyal to the code, Qui-Gon who said fuck the code follow the living force and the warrior with good intentions but falls to the darkside Count Dooku. With Dooku as Anakin's master you kill two birds with one stone in preventing a jedi from falling to the darkside and because of the care and respect Dooku had for Qui-Gon if he heard that a boy believed to be the chosen one found and only believed in by Qui-Gon what better way to honor his memory then to stay with the jedi order and train the boy only Qui-Gon believed in.

Obi Wan was the perfect choice because the Force willed it to be. If Qui Gon wasn't such a good teacher Obi Wan would not have been such a great Jedi. If Obi Wan wasn't a great Jedi Anakin could not have survived everything from Jedi training to temporarily defeating Sidious. 1. Because masters and apprentice influence each other one could assume Obi Wan influenced Anakin Skywalker enough that he overcame Vader. 2. Obi Wan was in a way the only Jedi or true follower of the Force at that time. True enough we had many Jedi knights and masters but they did not and would not listen to the Force. The Jedi (minus Obi Wan) were too stuck in tradition. 3. Because of #2 it might be safe to assume that Anakin would have left the order or possibly turned to the dark side sooner if not for Obi Wan. I'm sure that The Sith wanted Qui Gon removed because he listened to the Force. With Qui Gon gone Obi Wan was the next best thing. At the end of the Skywalker saga(episodes 1-6) everything happened as the Force willed and also as George Lucas willed. Thoughtful video but I don't think anyone could have stopped Anakin from having attachments and fears.
