If some of you out there think that Gremmy is straight-up stupid for the way he performed in this fight, then I must say that you've failed to understand his character. In the beginning, it was pretty clear that at any given moment, he could've imagined him dead, but he fought Kenpachi on his own terms. Through the fight, you can see Gremmy enjoying the thrill of the battle, for the very first time, he was having fun. Since he was locked up for the majority of his life, he had no battle experience, therefore his power of imagination was limited to some extent. As the fight progresses and Kenpachi keeps just breaking through everything, we can see him getting more frustrated, freaking out and running out of options to beat Kenpachi. That's mainly because he subconsciously imagined Kenpachi as a "monster", in other words, he was subconsciously boosting Kenpachi during the phase of the fight. That's how he ultimately was able to pull up such ridiculous feats, such as surviving the void/galaxy room created by Gremmy. The power of imagination is without a doubt strong, but it's also dangerous to put it to use.

The eye patch is confirmed to still steal spiritual pressure in the novels in fact it steals 10x as much and was made by Mayuri himself. The fight with Unohana was abt his subconscious mental limitation. Before Kenny would subconsciously limit his SP on top of the eye patch, now he's got access to 100% which is so great that even the new improved patch can't bring his level down to how low it used to be. This is why Central was so against it, Kenny without the subconscious blocks is a monster that noone could stop and they want to always be in control.

3 major mistakes Gremmy made that made him lose this fight: 1. Enjoying the thrill of battle with Kenpachi. It's subconcious but we all know that that is where Kenpachi thrives the most. Doing so took Gremmy out of his objective which is to exhaust every possible way to kill Kenpachi with his imagination as he clearly decided to play around and measure Kenpachi's extent. 2. He failed to imagine Kenpachi as a mortal that can be killed. Instead, he kept imagining for ways on how to kill a "monster". That alone painted Kenpachi as an indestructible force which resonated in their real fight. Since then, everything that he threw at Kenpachi did nothing as Kenpachi is now playing as the unkillable monster in his head. 3. Using his imagination to make him as strong as Kenpachi as his last resort. The way I see it, his own physical body just wouldn't be able to hold Kenpachi's strength.

Everyone still not understanding how Grammy lost?! It seemed pretty obvious that he imagined himself as strong as or stronger then kenpachi, but he'd had no real grasp at how strong kenpachi truly was(hes not a mind reader), and his body couldn't handle the power and he imploded. I like to think the eye patch is ironically what saved him. Cause it has always seemed that no(all those who kenpachi has fought with the exception of Unohana)one knows how truly strong zarachi is until he removes his eyepatch and all his spiritual pressure pours out. Funny thing is as strong as kenpachi is old man captain number 1 was still stronger as kenpachi isn't the type to serve those weaker than him. Unohanna killed him numerous time before he gain enough strength to kill her. With zaraki you really just need to kill him immediately

NGL i really felt that gremmy enjoyed this one, and kenny gave him the fight that he wanted, kenny probably knew grem's power and how gremmy is enjoying it, too bad he imagined kenny as a monster, so a monster kenny became. sad that it ended, gremmy respected kenpachi's power till the end, and aknowledged his mistakes. what a honorable enemy.

At first he was just enjoying being out and finally being able to battle and have fun during it, so he didn't immediately want to finish Kenny off. But over the course of the fight, when he realized what kind of monster Kenny is, he just couldn't wholeheartedly imagine beating Kenny anymore. At the end he came up with the craziest things he could imagine, like a meteor or being thrown in empty space, but deep in his heart he was always like "oh no, nothing can stop this monster, he will probably even be able to break out of that and still cut me". And with those thoughts, he already lost.

Those with more reiatsu can't be affected by such effects coming from those with weaker reiatsu than them. Think Aizen nullifying Soifon's Shikai effect. Also, Gremmy wanted a true fight which was also his first and wanted to go all out+ win fair and square by using his imagination in more "fair" terms and so, even if he could do that to Kenpachi, he wouldn't for those reasons.

I have to say that I enjoyed the episode, but holy cow this pacing is a big criticism I have. They just condensed and entire volume into 1 episode. The episode moved so fast that there was barely anytime to really process what was happening in the fight. In the manga we got to see every step of Gremmy's development and character arc which didn't really work as well here because we just aren't given enough time to become invested in him like in the literal volume where he is the focus. Not to mention Kenpachi's shikai felt so grand in scale and the manga emphasized that but we move by so quickly here. I still loved seeing one of my favorite sternritter animated though.

in the early episodes, we knew that someone with high spirit pressure sealing their zanbakuto will end up with a huge ass sword. Zaraki accidentally sealed his own sword when he fought with Unohan. His spiritual power was too high, so instead of a big ass sword form, the sword became a living being (and funny enough to have a sword of its own).
