American Kenpo was my very 1st art back in 1986 (although I did wrestle fot Poway High school for a year). I was 19 years old and in Job Corps San Diego for about a year and a half (George Gonzolez was my instructor). It was free and we trained M-F for 3 hours per night on average with sparing at the end every night. Sometimes we would go to other kenpo dojos to spare other students. Lol, we had old smelly taped up sparring gear and didn't even have gi's in the beginning. But we were a really tight group since we trained together every night and also lived/ate together. It was a lot of fun. The instruction was catch-as-catch-can as far as techniques went. We would drill in blocks, kicking and punching each night along with sparing at half power (we would try to go light contact to the face out of respect. No one wanted to go to work or class the next day with a black eye 😁 but the rest of the head was game). Kenpo sure was a lot of fun and we were a tight nit group back then. As for the rest of my martial arts lineage, I later studied Hapkido (brown belt), TKD, a little Shotokan, Hung Gar/Wing Chung Kung Fu and then MMA (only 6 months). Sorry for the long pist. Demonstrations are always pretty and sometimes impressive. But demonstrations always have the one thing you will NEVER encounter in a real world attack: a cooperative opponent. And always remember: There's no "style" in a real fight. There's only "fight" in a fight!
