I love Kenpo and all. It's just that when I switched over to Muay Thai and other combative training such as mma. I realized a lot of these techniques and combinations were impractical. Nobody stays loose or still while you try to execute most of these combinations. What I mean is that you kind of have to adapt and make up your own in a real fight.

Nailed it, opponents will cover up, create distance or start throwing bombs even with their eyes closed (regardless of skill level). Its built-in flinch response. Nothing learned required. One year later, but felt I had to say ... :)

@jadehelm288 0 Hmm, I agree its not realistic. That was entirely the point I made in response to Lovely Time's original post. Maybe I was unclear - appologies. As I said, basic flinch response won't allow someone to stand still and be 'tazed' as you so aptly put it. :)

When I studied Kenpo it was really enjoyable, but unfortunately the lack of ground principles and techniques makes this martial art very incomplete. And also a lot of people do the quick slaps on the gi that make cool sounds but wouldn't do much in a streetfight. And with the suing lawsuit generation, eye gouges, throat punches, could cost you a pretty penny if you use these techniques in regular non life threatening fights where there isn't CCTV.

I have back ground in Kempo, Thai boxing and wrestling. Kempo is very adaptable and flexible. I use it as a base discipline because I find the balance in stand up more flexible. (I’m southpaw, fight in orthodox stance) it allows and teaches imo more power from different angles and techniques like these Ingrain the importance of momentum. It’s not so much the technique itself but rather not stopping your momentum to assess the results of the blow. Continuing to push your opponent back and not allowing them to slip. This is very complimentary to wrestling, specially when first learning take downs, as it gives you wonderful base for setups and follow thru.

It's always funny to me how people get the learning process of Kenpo wrong. These people are in training to learn how to follow up on attacks and or leaning how flow from one technique to another.. There is value in having good form and discipline. There is reward and humility in traditional martial arts. So they won't actually be fighting for real, and they will demonstrate some techniques from the sport. American Kenpo/Kenpo Karate haa very fast techniques so you can basically not react in a way as an attacker if the defender reacts fast, properly and with power. It also depends on the one who is teaching you, every school teaches differently.

Kenpo is a very useful style of self defense. I have 15 years experience in this wonderful style. What attracts martial arts practitioners to Kenpo, is it's flexibility to tailor to each individual student. In most cases, the practitioner has to mold into the style. Keno adapts to you no matter what your age is, built or martial arts experience. Kenpo blends Japanese/Chinese martial arts together. Upon reaching Black Belt in Kenpo, the student has a well round education in striking, kicking, deflecting, grappling, grabs and weapon defenses - knives and other objects. I will never negatively talk about any form of martial arts because all styles have something positive to offer, but a lot of styles focus on one form of self defense. Kenpo is the opposite which will teach you a little bit of everything.

This is Kenpo - mainly a striking art. The practitioners here although not as smooth as Larry Tatum in their performance do highlight the key concepts of Kenpo. I am noticing the comments about hitting someone 27 times without them moving towards you. This obviously is a demonstration. The idea of 27 strikes etc.. teaches the student to "Follow up" with multiple strikes incorporating "Strike from where the hand is" - a key concept of Kenpo. You don't want to rely on just 1 punch or 1 kick to eliminate the threat, you need to keep going until the threat is eliminated. This is why you are seeing multiple strikes in rapid succession in these techniques. You're not going to be successful at throwing 15 strikes at someone, but Kenpo will teach you to block, punch, punch etc..

To All the people out there stating that American Kenpo doesn't work, this is not a sport. There is no rules in real life. Everyone keeps talking about why the attacker wont continue attacking. In reality you wouldn't keep attacking. Not if you were getting hit by these guys. There are many different versions of american kenpo taught all around the world just like all other martial arts. Some versions are better than others, some versions concentrate on aspects others don't, like speed. These are all examples of defense techniques that can be used offensively. but this is not how true kenpo practitioners fight. this is a display of the myriad of tools they have at their disposal in their personal tool box. i dont know these guys personally but I can tell you after being in the art for about 23 years these guys know what they are doing. We don't train for competition. some do but most don't. and as far as boxing, kickboxing, muay thai, krav maga, capoeria, BJJ etc. Everyone of those arts have strengths, and everyone of those arts have weaknesses, I'm pretty positive most of you guys out there who are commenting consider yourself pretty tough or well trained in the right art, which is good for you. I would also bet most of you wouldn't walk into a school like this and challenge the head instructor. Its easy to talk shit out here in the ether, its a whole different story to face off with someone, not knowing what the out come is going to be. I have videos as well and you are all invited to trash them if you like. What i have found in most of my travels is when people have to exclaim, they usually cant do. The toughest people i have ever known never told me how tough they were.They never had to.

It would be much better if you could include defense againt rapid multiple attacks such as in shorinji kempo or Filipino MA so that the techniques will look more realistic. Single attacks with attacker stands still while defender launch more than 10 moves is really really unrealistic. I think compare to other Kenpo afiliation around only AKKI can do it :)

I would like to see a little more settling on the strikes utilizing concepts of path of action and different timing between the strikes to maximize contact manipulation for the next target of opportunity. Your base and hips is where you generate 80% of your power not just your upper limbs. Some practitioners execute their moves too fast to hide their in- adequacy's of the missing moves applied in a properly applied technique. Slow is fast. Accuracy equals effectiveness. Breathing develops maximum power. Principles of motion are basic that should always be applied from a white belt to black belts.
@BlackTiger6895 жыл бұрын
Finally an educated person explains the science of kempo. To a ego fighter this make look fake. When in reality it is not only meant for self protection but also to pratice you self control. There is no need for full contact fighting. Kempo has the same strategy as any other Chinese martial arts and that is looseness,pliability and adaptibility. More force is not the right strategy nor in a fight nor in life. It creates recklessness. And that is clearly not what martial arts is about.

They give black belts a little easier to women I see. In the Kenpo I learned, it was a no-no to point your toes out for the world to stamp on.

Kenpo is very much a mix of traditional karate, "Kung Fu", and a touch of older form juijutsu. It won't get you anywhere in an MMA match because half the techniques aren't even sport legal. It's also true that canned techniques with a willing partner, as seen in the video, will never make you a great fighter on their own. However, I can tell you that those "million slaps" are pretty effective in a self defense situation when the targets are the eyes and throat. The toughest man I ever faught studied a large number of martial arts, but his primary base for his self defense school was a modified version of Kenpo. He was scary good at both sport and self defense martial arts. It was an honor to get my ass kicked by Kenpo techniques.

Awesome video! Just started training again. Any tips for working on speed?

Practice in slow motion. Your speed comes from knowing where your strikes are targeted, and moving them to that target intentionally.once you’re comfortable doing that, then increase your “movement speed” , before you know it you’ll be lightning fast 😊…2nd Dan black belt Kajukenbo

The problem with this stuff is that all those quick slaps and pats are very inconsequential. That's just not enough impact to do anything and in a live situation, your opponent would likely not even register a lot of those, especially under adrenaline. It just doesn't hurt or incapacitate enough to be effective. If you've trained full contact combat sports like Muay Thai, Kyokushin, kickboxing or MMA, you know this - you get hit with real bombs and just continue on, it's the nature of such a situation. It's only the really clean, powerful strikes to sensitive targets that land at the right moment that stop you in your tracks or make you hesitate. I think in Kenpo they should slow things down a bit and focus less on these long flippy lightning fast chains of little attacks, and work more on powerful and effective simpler combinations, takedowns etc.

When people say that the guy will throw a cross punch and tje technique does not work because of that, it means they don't understand how the technique works from the outside looking in. They clear don't understand anything about checking and the fact the movements you see are supposed to be the base technique and not set in concrete. You have to be able to adapt to your opponent which is why you need to understand how the techniques are related and how they fit into eachother so you can flow from one to the other when the opponent moves. In the kenpo world it would be nice to see more adoption of take down defense apart from the ram techniques and more sparring, not point sparring.... And actually making sure students know the moves of the techniques, hiw to actually apply them and learn to actually do some of the hitting of each of the moves on pads. Breaks my jeart to see sloppy footwork, rushed techniques without power. First we learn to be fluid, the speed and then power.

Kenpo is meant to overwhelm the opponent like a blitz attack.

The thumbs down obviously have not encountered the devastatingly effectiveness of combat Kenpo! Street combat Karate is taking out all close limbs and eyes breaking collar bone and crushing the throat. Try HARDCORE street combat kenpo Karate before judging ineffectiveness

I would feel more confident with one year's worth of Muay Thai/Kickboxing training than I would with 15 years of Kempo. This form of karate is too choreographed and not street fight efficient.
@davdooo-k9w5 жыл бұрын
depends who is the Sensei. Depends on which dojo. Also there is more than one style of Kenpo. There is: Hawaiian Kenpo, Chinese Kenpo, Japanese Kempo, and American Kenpo. So basically they are all different styles and sometimes are very impressive. Look up Shorinji Kempo performed basically by Japanese Monks. You will be shocked to see their power; that is traditional karate.
@davdooo-k9w5 жыл бұрын
I would say 15 years would go much further. That's my opinion personally. Especially if your training in New York or L.A.
@artemisia2002us5 жыл бұрын
If you said 2 1/2 years I would absolutely agree with you. 1 year just won't make you spontaneous enough and most of the Kenpo guys I trained with did hard sparring with face punches (unlike most TKD) and would eat you alive with only one year in any stand-up art.

Not a huge fan of Kenpo, but I do like it's formation and techniques! Although, I'm not sure if it's effective! Edit: Alright, change my mind. I just watched Kenpo vs Taekwondo and most of the kenpo guy's techniques are pretty swift! I don't think My TKD would not work on kenpo! Damn.

These are techniques that demonstrate knowledge and ability. Kenpo folks know that in a fight/brawl these techniques will not flow this way. Other training is integrated into Kenpo classes that allow one to adapt to a real fight. That being said, some of these folks don't seem to be engaging their hips enough to make the strikes carry power. On the other side of it, the seemingly silly strikes are created to get your opponent to easily block, parry, or dodge. In doing this the opponent theoretically will move into a position to receive a very effective strike. Much like traditional karate classes there are certain punches/strikes that are employed with torque causing pain and or injury that should be a fight ender. This form of Kenpo's strategy is designed to get well inside an opponents comfort "zone" (contract penetration) disabling his ability to generate their punches n such.
@callmeandoru26273 жыл бұрын
The techniques here are used for the purpose of demonstration only. These are not techniques you could use for sparring. They are not fake techniques. They are just not designed so that you can use them in a fight.
