As as child living in West Kensington in the 50s, my friends and I often used to visit Kensington Palace and at that time there was the part that was known as the Kensington Palace Museum in the Palace. It was a wonderful place for us youngsters and I remember it had the most extensive exhibits of the royal doll houses, many of them, which were fascinating to post-war kids like me who had very little. They also had costume displays under glass of course and at one time I remember they exhibited Princess Margaret's Wedding Dress. They also had interactive displays and I particularly remember one of the Great Fire of London where you pressed a button and it lit up with imaginary flames. On a Sunday morning the round pond would have lucky kids and enthusiasts sailing their boats and large scale models of steamships which would often stop working and their owners would have to paddle out to retrieve them. We could only afford a jam jar and little fishing net and would catch tiddlers. There was also the "fairy tree" which was a knarled old tree which had faries and elves and creatures carved into it and it was always exciting when the faded figures got a new coat of paint and were given a new lease of life. If you search on The Elfin Oak, Kensington Gardens you can see it is still there. It is now behind a protective cage but in my day you could touch it. We also loved to run through the leafy arches around the sunken garden (which didn't look as manicured is it does today and had a mysterious air about it, looking a bit abandoned). And then, of course, we would go to all the Museums in Exhibition Road and would marvel at things like the magic door that would open as you approached it which was such a novelty then but is now taken for granted on many stores and entrances. I could ramble on and on but it was a magical world for us youngsters and all free, just costing a few pennies on the bus to be transported to such delights. Yes London was a great place to grow up in and I miss it, having settled for a quiet life on the South Coast for my twilight years.

@@ToursbyFootLondon Thank you for reading and commenting on the ramblings of an old lady xx I also enjoyed your stroll down Kensington High Street which also brought memories of all the lovely department stores like Barkers and Derry & Toms. Our favourite was the old C & A where for a couple of pounds you could get a decent winter coat or a couple of dresses. It really was a happy stroll down memory lane x

Would like to add That Queen Victoria had a terrible childhood here, her Mother made her wear Holly round her neck so as to keep her head up at all times. Her Nanny was more like a Mother, but when Victoria got Married her Nanny could not let go. She did not get on with ALBERT, so with a sad heart, Victoria told her that she was sending her on a holiday back to Germany for a short break. Victoria was heart brocken. She also moved her Mother to other quarters. The first thing that Victoria did when she announced Queen, was to move to Buckingham Palace, Victoria was the first Monarch to live in Buckinham Palace. (Just a little bit of trivia) Did you know that the MABLE ARCH was once the entrance to Buckingham Palace, It was removed because it was not wide enough for the Royal Coach to go through. (Enough for now)
@Sineadlondontourguide2 жыл бұрын
So sad to think her childhood was so controlled Wonderful information here , delighted she had years of albeit short happiness with Albert Ironically the controlling nature of her mother back fired in years to come Always find Victorias story remarkable Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment Sinéad

I was amazed when I saw the monument/grave of Victoria's mother that Victoria put up on her Frogmore property! It was more impressive than the graves of a majority of the Kings and Queens! She also allowed her to live in Frogmore House!

Beautiful tour, this was the highlight of my first trip to London in 2005. At the time there was an exhibit of court dress with an audio tour that was amazing. I was delighted to go up the Kings stairway and see the other parts of this magnificent palace. Apt 1A was part of the tour, only a few rooms which were empty except for photos of how Princess Margaret and her husband used them. I had tea and cake at the Orangery. Diana's dress were also on display and included in the admission. I will always remember this experience as it was well worth the price of admission.

Great comments Deb. I was in London that year and also toured Apt 1A. Weren’t we lucky to walk through the future rooms of the duke and Duchess of Cambridge? It was quite empty at the time but still had a view through the a small opening in the wall of Princess Margaret’s blue drawing room. The opening was empty but had once housed Lord Snowden’s movie projector.

Great tour, one of the few I haven’t watched on mute. ;) Personally, I don’t care for the post of the Diana statue. I think it fails to have movement that she exhibited even at rest. Greetings from the U.S. and Happy Belated Birthday Sinead! I'm new to the channel but happy I found it! This tour made me a bit emotional towards the end but it was a beautiful tour. I'm a true Princess Diana fan from age 9 and can't wait to visit Kensington Palace and the rest of London to behold the beauty and rich history in person.😊 👏

I was here about 3-4 years ago. I had a choice between going to Tower of London or Kensington Palace and I chose the latter because the former gave me the creeps when I got there. So I went to Kensington Palace instead because I had to go home the next day.

Love your tours! You should consider springing for a gimbal for your camera. It prevents shaking/movements as you walk. They are a really cool little tool!

Thankyou very much for such a detail and quality introduction to Kensington Palace. Coming from BC Canada, there are of course several landmarks with names from England/Scotland/Ireland. I am very fond of the name "Kensington" as I live by a Kensington Park which I often take my daughter to play at the playground and she also attend the preschool at its community center.

I stayed just off Kensington High Street for work a few years ago and had absolutely no clue how close I was to Kensington Palace! I’ve never visited any of the palaces but I’d certainly have gone to this one if I’d been aware, rather than wasting my time wandering around TK Maxx (probably would have worked out cheaper too, heh-heh!)
@ToursbyFootLondon Жыл бұрын
Oh, we've spent many a pound in that TK Maxx! Sounds like you're in need of a visit back to check out the Palace!
