The Rite Aid at C & Alleghany was a Penn Fruit. At the end all you had to do was go one more block up Lee St. to Ontario St. That's the corner I hung out on in the late 50's and 60's. Hell of a lot better back then.

At K&A the steps going up to the el towards center city , i was waiting for the 60 bus going towards Richmond st. Some crazy guy came up and started punching that old boarded up newsstand there and about 150 rats came running out from under it ugh!

We had a coal furnace growing up, but Dad always burned wood from houses being torn down.We never got coal, though Mom talked about it.Dad still kept us warm though.

My uncle mentioned that when he was in his teens he would put some coal in the furnace at my grandparents building in Queens N.Y. Probably early fifties. I assume it was converted to either oil or natural gas. That building today is worth about $2 million dollars. It was multiple apartments

Kensington seems to have been considered a River Ward alongside Fishtown, Port Richmond and Bridesburg back when it wasn't as messed up. Now it seems to get lumped into the "North Philly" urban blight.
