A mainstay of Vancouver's Chinatown is closing Sunday, April 30, 2023. This popular restaurant has been serving huge portions of delicious Chinese food for over 40 years. They have an extensive selection of Chinese food served at value prices for the residents of Chinatown and beyond. I have been eating at this restaurant since the 1990's.
Before the Pandemic, Kent's Kitchen had eat in dining. With any order of food, customers can help themselves to free traditional Chinese soup and Chinese tea. I have even seen people come in for free soup without ordering anything.
This restaurant is known to help Chinese seniors living in Chinatown. They also help impoverished people in the area by providing value for those with limited budgets.
The food is high quality. Most likely their meats and produce are bought from other local merchants in Chinatown. Today I had the sweet and sour pork and the tofu puff stir fry on steamed rice. The sweeet and sour pork is as tasty as any restaurant in the city. They include bellpeppers in the sweet and sour sauce, which a lot of high end Chinese restaurants don't.
The tofu puff stir fry include mushrooms and Chinese mushrooms, which a lot of high end Chinese restaurants don't.
I will surely miss going to Kent's Kitchen after they close on April 30, 2023.
Update, Kent's Kitchen has Reopened as Tatos Kitchen. The food they serve is pretty good. Give them a try!

Very sad to hear. It was a university staple during my years as a starving student at UBC in the late 90s. $3.50 to $4.00 for a giant take-out box stuffed full of goodness that would last 2 meals or sometimes more. Those were some good times in Chinatown. I can't even recognize the place anymore.

I can relate the sad feelings. It happened down under in Sydney Chinatown during the lockdown. 3 famous Chinese restaurants which had been in business since the 70's and 80's finally closed down. I used to go there quite often in 1989, the 90's and early 2000's. Very sad indeed.

I speak the Four Counties dialect from Southern China, known as the "Sai Yip " dialect. It is considered a sub dialect of Cantonese. The four counties were Toisan, Hoiping, Yinping and Sunwui. Basically it' is four counties, speaking one dialect. You can break it down further and say each of the four counties is a sub dialect but they are close enough that we can understand each other. Toisan and Hoiping are so similar a lot of people can't distinguish the 2, including myself. When I was in China, people can tell the difference. Sorry to confuse you. Even when the City of Vancouver was doing their apology to Chinese Canadians in 2018, they had no idea what was what. I had to explain it to them. Thanks for viewing my video.

Vancouver's Chinatown is basically gone. Everything basically shutdown or went to Richmond and it's not the same. Vancouver's Chinatown back in the day was fun because you can walk it and it was full of places to wander to. In Richmond everything is scattered and you can't walk it like Vancouver's. Also everything is expensive now. Well it's like that pretty much everywhere now I guess. Well anyways Vancouver's Chinatown area is taken over by homeless people also just like Seattle. Not much old school Chinese places anymore which is also sad. Pretty soon Seattle's Chinatown will pretty much disappear also. The politicians and people trying to protect homeless people and criminals without any solutions are a big problem along with the high taxes.

When the new St. Paul's Hospital is finished in a few years, Chinatown will be gentrified. They will also tear down the Georgia Viaduct bridge so there will be a new area popping up. Chinatown will be still be there but very few Chinese people will be living there. I heard they tried to put up a large homeless shelter in Seattle. It was stopped but is that still on the agenda? Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Thanks for viewing my video.
@bubbalo3388

@@DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV the plan was to expand an existing smaller one. People in the community spoke up in opposition and the city backed down. The city probably thought it would be easy because of the older Chinese un the community. But nonetheless with the pandemic, homelessness in and around the area, crime high taxes, late night metered parking etc. There isn't much left in Chinatown. And with all the new residential buildings going up thus driving up rent likely also. Also most Chinese opening up new businesses now are doing it on the Easside to more affluental clientele where they don't have the crime and homeless problems like Seattle does.

We had an amazing huge dimsum banquet restaurant in san francisco chinatown that i use to go to but it closed too. Theres only like 2 dim sum restaurants left in san francisco chinatown and one of them is the one obama went to a few hears ago. I think of the main reasons of gentification. A very slowing tide of immigration from china which was one of the main people that america and also probbaly canada in the early 1900s and 1800s. Without this no one is going to maintain the tradition
@DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV
@DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV Жыл бұрын
Hard to imagine there's only 2 dim sum restaurants in your Chinatown. When I was in San Francisco for a dragonboat competition, we had a banquet in a large Chinese restaurant. I can't remember the name but it was upstairs. This was about 13 years ago. Most of the teams didn't show up for this function so I'm sure a lot of the food was dumped out. I went to visit our family association building. The address was written down as Was Hington Street. I bought a whole bunch of Chinese pastries from a bakery on Grant Street to take to the family association members. I couldn't find the address, so I ate a lot of the Chinese pastries and gave the rest to a street person. The next day I went back looking for the address and realized it was Washington Street I was looking for. I also miss going to the original Sam Wo Restaurant with the pulley dumb waiters to serve the food upstairs, as well as the small bar on Grant Avenue. I think I have more nostalgia for San Francisco's Chinatown than I have for Vancouver's Chinatown. Our Chinatown is in really bad shape now. A group of Chinatown business people went on a tour of your Chinatown a few months ago to learn how to better operate our Chinatown. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Thanks for checking out my video.

I laughed when you said a girl once wouldn't go in with you because I thought of my own first experience. I wasn't sure about it but not only was it busy but it was filled with construction workers so I knew it had to be good and a decent price. Vancouver is losing it's soul a little bit at a time. Have you ever gone to Don Mee dim sum and Chinese restaurant in Victoria BC? The prices are very steep. I went there and had 4 plates of dim sum and it came to $53 including taxes and tip. The dim sum at Don Mee is $9 to $14 a plate. It is made on premises and not store prepackaged dim sum. At the Walled City in Hong Kong, sing jje, they used to have dim sum for one penny per piece of dim sum. You could have a real feast for 50 cents. Hopefully it wasn't made from dog or cat otherwise, ugh.

I haven't been to Victoria in a long time so I can't remember for sure if I've been there. Probably not. Dim sum is very expensive these days. Sometimes I prefer just to go out for dinner because the price of those little dim sum dishes add up very quickly. I find the Walled City history very interesting. I would have liked to go there. I had a 50 cent dim sum on the street breakfast in Hoiping, China a few years ago, but that Walled City dim sum beats it hands down. Thanks for checking out my video.

High taxes high rent, all commercial real-estate need to readjust to conditions. But no can do they rather force them to fold and empty hopping to land a new tenant which is impossible in a economic downturn nowadays. All of you pay them back by shorting/putting the H out of Reit real-estate as payback and make some money on it. Only through collapse do you have a chance of restoring shops, as banks/reit fall one by one then they have no choice but to rent out cheap.

Thanks for your suggestion. I wouldn't because I suffered from the trauma of working in my grandfather's and dad's restaurant when I was ten years old. However, since the pandemic there are many great opportunities to run a restaurant for next to nothing and sometimes for nothing just by taking over the lease. Someone's misfortune turns into another person's opportunity. Thanks for checking out my video. I just found out someone is reopening Kent's Kitchen soon. Stay tuned.

When I was younger, my top criteria for food was volume. Second was taste. Third was cleanliness. Fourth was the restaurant's decor. In the old days, the volume at Kent's Kitchen was almost twice as much as what I got in this video. Also there was unlimited free soup and tea for in-restaurant eating. Nowadays, my criteria would be taste and cleanliness tied for first, then volume and then decor, unless I was trying to impress someone. Thanks for your honesty in your opinion.
