Some of the cuisine you’ll find throughout British Columbia (not just Vancouver) is amongst some of the best in North America. Definitely the best seafood in the world. If you can ever get ahold of a B.C. Spot Prawn, you’ll need a steak knife - they can get that big 😊

You did fantastic! Definitely hit some of my favourite spots. The Burrow has gone downhill since the rebrand took off quite a few menu items. For affordable delicious vegetarian/vegan food I definitely prefer Meet on Main (or any of the Meet locations). Another 24 hr bakery to check out if you come into town late with several locations is Breka.

We're not sure what it was like 20 years ago, but we have heard that the drug and homeless problem wasn't nearly as bad in the past. Besides the cost, that's the one negative we found there. Otherwise, it's an incredible city. Super beautiful, and such a diverse food culture. We would love to go back some time - and also see more of B.C. in general.

Commercial Drive in the day was all Italian and it was fantastic. Italian shoe stores, restaurants. It all started to change after the 80’s. The restaurants were fabulous. You should have tried the restaurant at the Italian Culture Centre off of Grandview Hwy. Great food.

Right away I could pick out Brandon's east coast/maritime accent, albeit mild, so I was surprised you have never had candied salmon before. Didn't realize that was more of west coast thing. Yeah, the candied salmon seems like more of a west coast thing for sure. I grew up with lobster, mussels, clams and all sorts of other seafood..but salmon is more of a BC thing. We love salmon, so we were more than happy to eat it in as many forms as we could during this trip! SO GOOD. Thanks for liking and subbing!

Thanks! We really appreciate it! It's an incredible city. I'm from the East Coast, so of course I feel at home near the ocean..but Vancouver is much more our vibe than Halifax. One of the best and most diverse food destinations in Canada, for sure. It could be pretty expensive, but we were pretty surprised by how cheap some things could be. That sushi was amazing - and incredibly affordable. The amount of drug addicts openly using in the street was a lot more shocking than the prices. Saw at least half a dozen people, face-planted into the sidewalk. 😬

If you come back to Vancouver, there's a great pasta restaurant called Anton's. Huge portions, decent price, in house made pastas, etc. It's amazing. There are a few other places: Pizzeria Ludica, Kozak Ukrainian Eatery, Angelina's Dutch Corner, and Serious Coffee (all in New Westminster). My mom also suggests Tomahawk Restaurant (North Vancouver) 😅.

Our next two videos will be Seattle! We loved it there as well. Honestly, I'm not sure which city we enjoyed more. I just really love the West Coast! So much different than where I'm from. You'll have to check out Vancouver some day, for sure. The homelessness is pretty shocking in some areas, but it's still a very beautiful city.

As much as I like shopping and dining in Chinatowns I can't help but know they started out as a ghetto, as Asians weren't wanted back then.

Chinatown in Vancouver will always be the original. No matter the harsh reality of what it has become, which is sad... But anyone who has grown up here can understand and realize the struggles of prices and keeping up with this city has brought, and community has to stay together and make sure our OG spots are important and stay open. Because every shop has endured and stayed afloat, every famous dim sum and BBQ duck and sweets we grew up with are still here because of ORIGINALITY . Not Richmond. Or any new market they'll rebrand as Chinatown. There's no way Richmond will take that away.

You're basically safe anywhere in downtown, but it starts to get sketchy in Gastown once you go East past Abbott Street. Anywhere West of there is fine. Of course Gastown is closest to East Hastings which is pretty bad so stay away from there. I don't think you'd get jumped persay, but best not to be around the night folk when they're high. Also, Bc Rolls generally don't have much Salmon. It's all about the crunchy skin. Also, BC salmon is sockeye as opposed to Atlantic salmon. As for the homeless problem. There are a lot of homeless here for a couple reasons: 1) Vancouver is a pretty good climate for a homeless person year round when compared to other parts of Canada, and there are a plethora of shelters. 2) we used to have a horrible mental health institute called Riverview. It was abusive in a lot of ways for people with mental health, and underfunded. They shut down the hospital years ago, but instead of figuring out a transfer to other facilities, all the patients basically were just left to fend for their own, and so a lot of them found their way into downtown drug scene. 3) there are a lot of tourists and wealthy people who live here which makes panhandling pretty good. 4) instead of locking up the homeless when they commit crimes, the police instead release them after a few days.

@wherearewe-yt yes. The only solace with regards to security and the feeling of safety is that nobody is armed with guns. I think to solve the issue you'd have to reopen some mental health institutes that specialize with addiction and pump a LOT of money into getting people off the streets and into those facilities in order to rehabilitate them, teach them skills, have doctors diagnose and fine tune their medication (mental health medication is often more than one, and finding the correct mix at the proper dosages is a bit of a crap shoot/trial and error. ). Once you graduate people, it is also challenging to find them homes in an environment that supports their continued growth (not just sticking them all back together somewhere), and finding them family doctors so that they can get consistent care from a doctor that knows their specific health history.

For donuts in vancouver, 49th Parallel & Lucky's Donuts (they are a bit more premium, the ones featured were good choices too). For Asian food, Crystal Mall near Metrotown in burnaby might have been an interesting choice and accessible by transit, Richmond is better for chinese food. Vancouver and the Lower Mainland really is spoiled for choice. There are some fantastic gelato places in the city too.

The cake donut an old-fashioned donut in US. I prefer them. Too funny - schmaltz is chicken fat. You put a smear of cream cheese on. Love the steam powered clock. Wild salmon "maybe it was a stripper in a past life". LOL Wild salmon is less fatty because it's active. Filipino place's food looked amazing. Lots of good food. I love an old-fashioned donut! Simple, but delicious. I'm not typically a fan of super sweet things with lots of icing/ frosting. Hahaha. Yeah, I had a total brain-fart. Couldn't think of the right word! I wish we got to try one of those spreads. They sounded so good! That sushi was incredible! Especially for the price. We've been to Japan in the past, which has the best quality sushi (obviously) for the best best price of any place we've traveled. This place was definitely up there. Glad you enjoyed the video! I haven't tried Kam Wai, but there are killer baozi (steamed buns) at Sunfresh Bakery in Chinatown. As good as what you'd find in Taiwan or Mainland China. And Richmond is a goldmine for.....well, everything Chinese food-related.

Siegel's bagels are about as good as you can get as far as authentic Montreal style bagels in Vancouver. Apparently the quality of water here is different which results in a different texture. The water in Vancouver is much softer than water back east.

Understandable! We used to live in Toronto, about 8/9 years ago. Even THEN we could barely afford to eat out. Now, living in major cities like Toronto and Vancouver has gotten totally ridiculous. People back home think that we must be rich because of the lifestyle we live. The truth is, living in any major city in Canada is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive. I lived there in 2010 / 2011 - it was one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Every time I go back though, it’s sketchier. The voters are so empathetic to the addicts that it’s kind of made big swaths of the city unsafe. I don’t have answers, but trying to stop the flow of drugs into the city and putting resources into getting people clean couldn’t hurt.

As my husband says "total failure of a city". My sister moved there and was evict from 3 different property in less than 2 years for no cause other than owner wanting to increase rent and lying about some kind of family moving in (how that is legal anyway??). Befroe she finally returned to japan she was brutally attacked by a man that we learned had been in prison many times before but somehow walking around in that society (impossible in japan). This happened in the very public area. I did working holiday there in 2009 and really loved it at that time (I know some bad places at that time but definitely it was not comparable to these days and actually i volunteered in dtes those days) but it has been totally destroyed by western style parasite investing since that time. Greed of upper world creates more broken bottom world. Vancouver has no balance now and lovely beauty cannot hide that ugliness. I will never go back to there.

We're sorry to hear about what happened with your sister! Sadly, not surprising. Rent in most major cities in Canada has gotten totally out of hand. We can't even afford to live there anymore! Our apartment in Toronto was $1200 when we rented it 7 years ago. We looked it up and discovered it now goes for quite literally DOUBLE that now. Wages have certainly not doubled in the meantime, either. There are drug problems in a lot of major cities in Canada, but it's so much more open and in your face in Vancouver. We've heard from many locals that it's gotten much worse over the years. We'd have liked to visit years ago, when it wasn't so bad. Such a beautiful city- but clearly with many problems. We miss Japan. It's one of our favorite countries to visit. We plan to return next year.

It's not weird in North America - but it's definitely not as common here in Europe to start a day with donuts. I've never seen anyone doing it, actually. Maybe a sweet croissant in some countries, but never a donut. It's more of a snack or dessert in most of Europe.

if you want more steam bun options, you'll want to jaunt over to Sun Fresh Bakery - you'll like the filling to bun ratio and they have a few more steamed/fried bun options. Kam Wai my family usually just grabs the non steam bun dim sum items and then buns from Sun Fresh (along with congee and rice noodle rolls if we want more cheap meal options). Def check out Richmond if you want more Chinese/East Asian options as most of the Chinese shops and restaurants have moved over there many years ago. East Hastings is where a lot of homeless has been pushed to, and have resource availability there so a lot of people feel uncomfortable in that area, though wandering through at daytime is fine but why a lot of the newer Chinese spots have opened in Richmond. As for Japanese, I live downtown and haven't been to Sonoya. I prefer more authentic food, but I'd suggest if you want easy take out really high quality sushi,, maki and chirashi don, try Sashimiya - it's a small Japanese mini grocery store but mostly does take out rolls and such. As for wild salmon, it means it was wild caught not fish farm salmon. There are a bunch of different salmon varieties in BC as well. For cheap eats, I'd suggest trying Oyo downtown. it's actually a tiny stall that funnily enough, is inside a Pokkerito. You have to know about it, but you go into the Poke shop and then walk to the back to the Oyo window. You can get a bowl of Korean noodles for $10. There are a ton of places to try here. I'm glad you managed to try indigenous food - it tends to be a bit pricier because most of it has to be made in house and isn't mass produced unlike staples for other ethnic foods. That price isn't actually too bad if you think about how much work they have to put into the food. There are so many food options especially if you venture a little further out of the city centre, but even then there are so many options to try just in the downtown core but 2 days is really too short. You could also do some of the Asian food courts out in Richmond or Crystal Mall in Burnaby (though be prepared to bring cash as a lot don't take cards). If you want to hit up Korean food, there's a great area in Burnaby where it's all compacted together and easily walkable. Honestly 2 days in any city isn't enough to try all the yummy food - couldn't imagine doing Tokyo in 2 days....I'm doing 2 months and feel like it's not going to be enough XD

We thought the Japadog was good, but we do agree that it's pretty expensive for what it is. Especially given the incredible sushi we had, which wasn't even that much different in price for the two rolls! Yeah, we did out best to avoid East Hastings. Chinatown was a lot more sketchy than we had imagined. So many people openly using in groups, or passed out in the streets. Can't even imagine how bad East Hastings is. I've seen video from others, with the homeless encampments. Yikes. We missed out on Stanley Park this time, but hopefully we can get back to Vancouver again. We loved it, overall!

There’s way better donut places than lees and Granville Island is the last place I’d go for good food. China town is definitely not the place to go for good Chinese food, you should have gone to Richmond or anywhere along Kingsway street between Joyce street and boundary road so many different Asian restaurants.

We liked Granville Island! Everything was quite good - and for filming purposes, being able to try a bunch of things in one place is definitely ideal. Especially since we were already running around the entire city for all of the other things we tried. Hahaha. Yeah, we heard that Richmond is the better spot to go - but again, a bit out of the way with only two days to explore. We had a few places marked there, though. Chinatown was pretty sketch, so it'd have been really nice to check out Richmond. What would you recommend for donuts? We also went to Duffins, which came up a lot when we were looking online for spots to try.

That was an exaggerated view of Gramble Island. Those food shops are selling common grocery store type items at about three times the price and the food court has been completely abandoned. In fact most of Gramble Island looks like a shadow of its former self.

Metro Vancouver had 2.6 million residents in 2021 (last census). You might be surprised to learn that of that population 55% are deemed 'visible minorities'. Of these citizens, 20% are Chinese, 14% are South Asian, 5.5% Filipino, 2.5% West Asian, 2.4% Korean, 2.4% Latin American, 1.6% Black, 1.2% Japanese, and 1% Arab. I suggest everyone living in the Lower Mainland area is a minority because when you add in Brits, Germans, Italians, South Africans, Greeks, etc., etc., there is no real dominating nationality ... other than we are all Canadians ... with great 'fusion' food offerings. 👋😎

maybe canadian would say full time job (i worked 40 hours in the week) sorry we use different word in japanese. For me feels not like 正社員 but was closer to 契約社員 since my working holiday was fixed term. But pay and respect level felt close to アルバイト (；＿；)

We used to live in Toronto for years, and have also been to Montreal. Vancouver is easily up there as one of the best, in our opinion!

We actually grow a fair bit of food right in Vancouver. 20% of the Metro is in crops or pasturage, and providing 12,000 farm jobs.

We did go to Momo Hut, which was a Nepalese/ Indian place! We had a goat curry there, and butter chicken momo. We just didn't film there. 😁
