Greetings professor Tamplin and fellow youtubers, I've been practicing (as in, coached) vocals since about April using various youtube videos. I've mostly skimmed over Mr. Tamplin's offerings but this one caught my attention and it was certainly a very well done and profitable deep dive. I really appreciate you providing this to the community. I noticed early on that Blondie sings with very little effort (I mean that as a positive). When I try to sing along, I know if I'm straining to hit the high notes I'm in trouble. She does it in a way that makes it look easy and she just has a seemingly effortless grace to her vocals. It's great to hear it isolated and I'd love to hear Heart of Glass too if you wish. Thanks again for posting!

OH my goodness...that's amazing! I am just a newbie when it comes to production, but that clever tweaking of different reverb effects were just what that song needed to bring it right up to the standards of this day and age! And it really was a subtle thing when you listened to the whole track with your enhancements...but added real sparkle! :-)

I have watched many of these "isolated vocals". This is so interesting. I realized at some point why some songs sound thin when you attempt to sing a song live karoake. Many of these artists had the chorus doubled or multi tracked so it cuts through the mix. It is so interesting how so many artists are really singing soft when it's the band making them sound huge! I love this series! I think I could talk to Ken about vocals for hours. 🤘🙂🎸

Nice video Ken! Yes, in my mind the vocals to this are much heavier. Today a lot of producers automate the reverb settings like the decay time, room size, pre-delay and density. But lots of modern reverb plugins have 3D shape setting features which you almost have to know phD level geometry to optimize unfortunately.

Really interesting. I have to say, I am a lo-pro guy and in watching these this afternoon, I tend to prefer the less effected originals. I also have to note that I have been watching more of the singer/songwriter or alternative vids rather than the more traditional rock, metal or rock artist types, as that is my preference. But it is also interesting to see the production on something like Teen Spirit. Now, Kurt ended up thinking that was way too produced and the next record was less “slick” so “In Utero” had a lot less, with Steve Albini.

I’ve actually always really loved listening to music from the 70’s and sometimes earlier because they didn’t have many effects available, which means it’s often just the singer and the band, it’s more raw, less produced/mixed, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I really love some of the amazing things artists have done and effects they’ve come up with over the years but it is somewhat refreshing to go back in time to when music was just great in its simplicity. I’d like to see you do some reactions/breakdowns of Twenty One Pilots and Local H. Two-man acts that found ways to pack some real sound into their music but in very different ways. I’m just a fan and don’t know anything about mixing music so it would be cool to see a professional sort of analyze and break it down. I know Local H had a problem finding a bass player so Scott just put a bass pickup on his guitar and he uses a lot of pedals for effects and I’m sure has used track loops and things like that, but it’s all pretty old school seeming to me, vs, TOP, who I think definitely uses a lot of track looping and stuff to get their interesting and full sound out of a 2 man operation. The front man does a lot of multi tasking, and the drummer creates a lot of the energy and power and they just play off of and sort of feed into each other’s energy and work together as a team, so it’s really interesting to see how they do it all.

I am a big fan of Blondie, although I never really thought she did anything extreme---no real low or high singing, no severe distortion, not a big range. But the songs seemed to fit her, or she fit them. (I could be wrong since I'm not very knowledgeable of music). Found this very interesting about the various things she did with her voice in this song. As always, I learned a lot about a group I listened to all the time. Knowing nothing about the recording aspect just means I pay closer attention to what you say and do with the vocals because without everything you explain, I'd never get it. Thanks much for teaching about all aspects of a song/recording. For folks who don't know the stuff you talked about mixing, when we listen to the finished product, do we very often hear it, or does our brain pick it up without knowing? (in general)
