How To Do Vibrato With Resonance - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
What is "Vibrato" for singing and why does it matter?
A true natural vibrato is the "final resting place" of resonance for a strongly supported, whole tone, "relaxing" into a state of oscillation, creating maximum resonance.
There are many debates as to whether the oscillation of vibrato should be above the whole tone or below it.
This author is a firm believer the the oscillation must be "below" the whole tone since its purpose and function is a relaxation response. Going above the whole tone would not promote a relaxation response.
Vibrato is a very personalized "signature" for the voice.
And there are many different types of Vibrato.
It also can be a key to determine the health of one's voice.
And/or it also may be used as an "effect" for different styles and types of singing.
As we explore how to become a better singer, vibrato plays an important role in the resonance of the voice.
Let's first explore the different types of Vibrato for singing.
1) Diaphragmatic vibrato is characterized by diaphragmatic pulsating during a sustained tone. This type of vocalizing generally produces a tremolo effect which is not healthy and hard to get away from, once it has been embedded. The breath should flow evenly and not be subject to a "pulse" of the diaphragm. This is usually heard from the "herculean" roles of a big tenor or a big soprano role.
2) A Vocal Trill vibrato is often taught through through vocal training of matching pitch to the ones played either on piano or guitar usually in a half or full step toggles from the original pitch, to a half step and back again. This can result into a "Wobble" which becomes very wide and slow and directly affects absolute pitch. Its oscillation is slower than a healthy vibrato, which has much less pitch differentiation.
3) The Laryngeal vibrato, or being manipulated from the larynx (voice box) is also not a good idea since the voice box should stay stable while singing. Its task should not be to manipulate vibrato. This is often referred to as "Gospel Jaw" or "Jaw Vibrato" where the jaw moves up and down. This can be witnessed in singers such as Whitney Houston or Steve Perry.
4) Caprino vibrato in Italian means goat-like (wiggle) or "little goat." This is a fast and nervous-sounding vibrato. Many artists have made this sound famous such as Stevie Nicks or Manhatten Transfer (with a quick "horn stab" sound)
5) A "Tremolo" vibrato has a faster oscillatory rate and is usually "wider" than a natural vibrato. Artists such as Aaron Neville have made this sound famous.
6) A "Natural" vibrato is where one can hold a note and "relax" into a state of oscillation. It also provides for greater volume when singing without adding pressure (resonance).
Some believe that vibrato just "happens naturally" and requires no vocal training. This author does not believe that. In order to become a better singer, everything we do with our voice, if we are looking to do it correctly, requires vocal training.
So whether one is looking to increase vocal range, learn better vibrato, and more, it is a good idea to get with a quality vocal coach and get competent vocal lessons on your journey to great singing!

I think i started adding vibrato as a young child singing cause i don't remember having to learn it. I grew up in a musical family and guitar and singing came more naturally to me i think as a partial result of being around it so much. That being said, i can't stand when people suggest that you HAVE to be born into music/born with talent, to be a good musician. It's just not true....what people lack is passion, not talent. If your passionate about anything music related, you CAN obtain the skills you need because these techniques are not magic fairy dust. It's real, proven stuff. I know a guy who started working on his vocal technique just a few years ago and the difference is amazing. He couldn't even sing in the right key half the time when he started. BELIEVE IT GUYS!! Ken knows what hes talking about!!!!!

Well, that’s very enlightening. I learned vibrato through study cause i love the way it sounds and I’m really obsessed with it. You really have to be relaxed, otherwise it will never be natural. You just can’t “vibrato” if you’re over singing or beyond your vocal range. When you talked about doing it beyond the line, well I can’t think how this can be natural as well, but natural is just the best way for you to be consistent when doing something. That’s what i think at least. Another great video from the Master :)

All the pedagogy on vocal training state that the tongue should be on the floor of the mouth, behind the teeth. Which is correct?

My professor in college was teaching the ENTIRE CHOIR CLASS diaphragmatic vibrato combined with vocal trill. I don’t think this is a thing to do for choral-style singing, but please advise if anyone knows why they might’ve been teaching that way. I’m very curious. I’ve gotten into this bad habit of diaphragm oscillation, but I’m finding it SO MUCH MORE comfortable to slip into a more relaxed and natural vibrato. Now it’s just a matter of time, self awareness and gentle reminders to keep breath support even and steady. That muscle memory may take years to unlearn, weeks… not sure, but I’ve got the rest of my life to find out:) Thank you for this video.

@@kentamplin Ken thanks so much. In my case, not yours, those who cannot do teach. So I was teaching my wife, a former folk singer and I was able to explain vibratto this way. SHe was lost, so I will send her here. She watches battle of the bands and I told her Ken is a genius, compared to reality tv shows,. I told her "by moving the diaphramg (stomach or controlled breathing-as you say and demonstrate) you are effectively changing the lenght of the hollow body of a resonator, like a violin or guitar, so the resonant frequency changes slighty and the volume/efficiency of the new resonant note becomes dominant. As a physicist, the explanation makes sense but to any non science person I think it would be ridicioulos From Wikipedia: "Because amplitude varies directly with sound pressure (A = k1P) and sound pressure varies directly with distance (P = k2d), such that amplitude also varies directly with distance (A = k1(k2d) = k1k2d), the amplitude of the sound as perceived by the listener will be greatest when the speaker is at the point in its rotation closest to the listener and least when the speaker is farthest away. Because the speaker is constantly moving either toward or away from the listener, however, the mechanism's rotation is constantly affecting the listener-perceived sound's wavelength by either "stretching" the wave (increasing wavelength) or "squeezing" it (decreasing wavelength) - and because frequency, i.e., pitch, is inversely proportional to wavelength, such that increasing wavelength decreases frequency and vice versa, any listener for whom the speaker's motion changes the sound's perceived amplitude (i.e., any listener whose distance from the speaker is changing) must also perceive a change in frequency. "

I have a question: So when you or any singer sings a song. Do they think about where to put the vibrato? or they just think about singing on pitch and the vibrato comes in naturally as they go to a relaxing state and apply less pressure? When I sing I pay too much attention to vibrato and I'm always thinking about where to put it and how much. And I end up paying less attention to the song itself. Should I stop thinking about it and just sing? 2: is there any relationship between vibrato and breath? When I hold my breath a little, I get the vibrato naturally. is that good or bad? btw GREAT videos! Thank you for sharing! 🤘

Aaron Neville is more like Tremelo than Vibrato. Not a negative thing. Just an observation that when volume drops in the oscillation, it's Tremelo. And when volume is more consistent, it's Vibrato. Just a guitar player opinion LOL

Just wondering if the lessons have specific exercises. Also, I'm pushing 60, and I am just hoping to improve my range a bit so I can sound prettier and also do the higher harmonies on my own compositions. So if I go for those lessons, will I have something daily that I can practice, and that I can understand?

Ken, glad I found you. I’d just like to say, I viewed a lot of your videos, and also your lists of all time great singers. It seems to me you missed one of the greatest singers of all times on your lists and that’s you. Your a freaking amazing singer. And in my humble opinion your right there in the top 10 of the all time bests. The difference between the best ever and you, is the fact that your an extremely talented passionate educator who passes the gift onto others. And based on that-- that makes you the number one in my book. Also, I viewed a lot of your students videos and I’d just like to say - your the real deal and your students reflect that. Your a world class talent, singer, and person. Thank you for all the wonderful shares here on the KZbin and keep up the great work.

EXCELLENT video a bout in depth vibrato and different "types" so to speak. However I may add that sometimes singer do both natural and unatural vibratos especially for the music repertoire from the great american song book and jazz. Unatural vibratos because you guessed it, there's a vibrato every 5 secs xD with some short and long but at one point and not all of them have that perfect oscillation and speed. Especially when you add every other elements of a song that needs detail, phrasing, pronunciation etc. And on stage it's even worse there's some notes you sometimes just need to hit or it's a flop so you kinda force it like the jaw of whitney houston to make sure it pops.

Hi Ken Like your explanation for natural vibrato I am practicing by starting with a whole tone then going underneath the flatline then speeding it up until it naturally oscillates Does natural vibrato happen when your abdomen is compressed and starts to shake while being compressed? (this is what I am experiencing) Also is there perhaps additional ways besides this and the ghost exercise to practice natural vibrato?

You say the debate involves the trill vibrato going from the note to the semi tone below or above and then back. You also say that natural is note to semi tone below to back up. Try looking at it from this perspective: both are natural sounding, and so are several more. This is because when you develop a natural vibrato, it has the tendency to go down a semi tone then back up, up a semi tone and back down, up a semi tone then down to the semi tone below and hover around it that way, up a full tone and back down, down a full tone and back up, or even wider. Many MANY SINGERS have used vibrato these widths and several more. If you listen to people's vibrato in half the speed, you'll see why there's all these variations. My point is that naturally developed vibrato can sound like BOTH AND SEVERAL MORE VARIETIES! No vibrato in the same performance will ever be just one kind. Just keep this in mind when you say "This the natural vibrato". It's all natural! This is not how it should be, this is merely your preference. Now, the stomach pulse is NOT natural, I can see that being the case. Personally, the trill can work, but is more work than obtaining vibrato needs to be.

I don't know much about the theory/ techniques of singing but I can " feel" music and some special things around techniques of singing without really being able to explain them. I started singing ( in the " shower"😉 )and doing a few cover songs myself, just 8 months ago while being bored during New Zealand's Covid Lockdowns. As you said, I've just tried to learn from some other great singers by just copying their techniques, without really understanding what they are actually doing. Then, by " accident" I started to watch some of your videos which inspired me a lot, and... " surprize🤩..." everything you were saying and showing has made so much sense to me. They helped me to jump from " level 2 to 4" ( still a lot of work to reach level 10🥲), by just understanding a little bit more about what is happening behind the " scenes". Anyway, too late for me to have any aspirations in singing, but I still like to do things right, even though I am singing just for my family. Thanks a lot for these amazing videos you are doing for us, which I am sure are helping lots of other aspiring singers for who any progress really can count and can make the difference between "success in the bathroom" 😉 and worldwide success...By the way, after experimenting a little bit by myself with the techniques you were explaining in this video, I got to the conclusion that I TOTALLY AGREE with you that "natural VIBRATO goes BELOW the line ", no doubt about it. Thank you...I will keep watching all your new videos.

Also on the upper or lower view you have I think its better to think of it as an overtone and some notes like the 3rd in a major scale want to resolve to the 4th but the 1 will modulate well with the seventh but with bass guitar the 7th leads into it still. So it's all speculative. But I'd say to go up is better to encourage harmonic overtones. And depending on the chord voicing like diminished or augmented and modal.

Bruce Dickinson was my biggest inspiration when I first started singing, and so I've aways had his vibrato style from emulating him. Are you saying that it's unhealthy in the sense that it could cause damage? It's always been very natural for me, personally, and I've always had that kind of vibrato.
@kentamplin
@kentamplin 6 жыл бұрын
It's a wide vibrato, and not really a relaxing one. It's a lot of work. It won't hurt your voice, but it's hard to get out of that habit if you do it a lot. You kind of get stuck there.

Jordan Kowalski: if it comes that naturally to you it probably isn’t unhealthy or dangerous, provided you follow all the other rules (breath control, diaphragm support, proper warm ups, etc) but if you listen carefully to Dickinson before his first couple of solo albums, compared to, say, “Fear of the Dark” and everything since, you’ll notice that he took the classic ol’ “air raid siren”, modulating amplitude and pitch at the same time, and learned how to modulate each of those characteristics individually (like what Ken is showing in this video), and with a lot more finesse, which has ultimately made him a much more versatile singer. Bruce learned this (and more) by getting a good vocal coach around that time - so you’re on the right path if you’re watching Ken’s videos! Up The Irons!🤘🏼 Ken: 9:02 “Bruce Dickerson”? Really? Your videos are great, and you’re a phenomenal vocalist … but, seriously, c’mon … “Dickerson”? 😆

When I reach that point of "natural vibrato", it feels like my voice is starting to betray me and my natural instinct is to try to control it. It reminds me of a saying one of my old vocal coaches had: "It's amazing what you can accomplish when you learn to get out of your own way." This is extremely difficult to overcome, and I wonder how many other singers have run into this.

This was very comprehensive and thorough. I really appreciate your straight up easy to understand explanations. I did not know the term "vibrato" until recently. It has always come natural to me when holding a note. But it is possible that I have too much vibrato at times. I lack the ability to self access this. I still don't understand resonance so I am eager to hear what you have to say about that. Ken do you have any tips for people with medical issues which may affect the ability to sing? For example, I have Multiple Sclerosis and asthma. Sometimes it is hard to get my muscles to cooperate due to the MS and sometimes I lack the breath to sustain notes due to the asthma. Now on a good health day I have less difficulties with the things I have just mentioned. However, here is probably the biggest physical obstacle to me singing the way that I know that I can. I had a rare diaphragmatic congenital hernia repaired. I am supposed to have more lung power now but the surgery weakened my diaphragm quite a bit. I know you are not a doctor but do you know of any diaphragm exercises I could do to strengthen this area? The end result for me with regard to my medical problems is a weak voice at times...I am constantly being told to sing louder. So I might turn up the volume of my technical equipment but this is just a band aid solution. What are some techniques that I can use to sing louder? Thank you so much!

Amazing! When I do vibrato, I always seem to come up from my stomach and my head shakes as I bring the strong vibrato up. You have just torn me down, to build me back up again. I need to know where to start? 2.0 or 3.0. I will be getting your course or courses. Please advise me where to start? I want to start from the beginning and become great. I, too, am a high baritone: I just need you to correct me and direct and teach me. Buying your course. Please tell me what course to buy first. I will be looking for your answer. Ken, your are the best and I’m ready to commit. I Love your voice and how you teach. It’s all about the breath. I want to be able to compress ( grit) my voice like Richard Marx, yet sound like me.

At the end you summarize mentioning breath support, having a relaxed, open throat and chord closure, presumably on a vowell sound. This "closure" seems to be the key. Because you can have all of the proper singing technique and qualities in straight tone but then a shift has to happen which introduces and also stops vibrato. The diaphragmatic support of breath has to end up coming into a type of resistance then. But it isn't the closing of throat or glottal muscles per se but something closes to provide that back pressure. or interplay. Is it some sort of anatomical shift below the larynx? Pardom my lack of techincal knowledge, I'm just trying to follow and learn. Cheers, Josh

Never cared for Stevie Nicks’ voice b/c of her goat-like vibrato....NOT pleasurable to listen to, however, I know singing styles can be quite subjective. If it’s applied in small doses for effect, I don’t mind it but in Stevie’s case, that’s just her overall style.
