I've used kentmere films quite a lot over the years (100 and 400 iso). I really think you can't complain much about them. I like to think of kentmere as an older rendition of ilford's current pro line (Hp5, Fp4). Grainier for sure, but sharpness and overall performance isn't too far off. Plus, mixing in Xtol makes up for any shortcomings. Stocks like these are basically what the greats were using 40-50 years ago, and those are some of the greatest photos of all time.

I’ve shot several rolls. Like it. To my eye, pretty close to HP5 at 400 ISO. Tried a roll at 1600. Looked good. Will do again.

Not that cheap, for a level entry amateur film, it`s the same price i was paying for HP 5 a year ago, and ilford recommend pushing to 800 only. I`ll stick with Hp 5 for now and when it reaches £10.00 a roll i might pack up and go home, sorry for the rant.

HP5 is probably the single greatest film money can buy imo. I don’t blame you!

Yeah, totally, i have been shooting hp5 for more than 25 years and like you say it never disappoints, just to mention ,when i started shooting hp5 i could buy it for £3,85 a roll,so you can see my frustration. @@TheNegative

Eventually I found the right channnel. Im changing all my process for B&W. What do you think of Tetenal Paranol S for stand dev ?

I’m not experienced with it but I looked it up. It seems to be a high acutance developer meaning it’s gonna sharpen and enhance the grain, so it’ll be best for slower films. If you shoot 35mm your film is gonna be kinda grainy. If you’re ok with that then it’s fine. Also I recommend sticking with one developer so you can refine your skills with it and eliminate guess work.

Thank for this. Bought 2 rolls yesterday. Big fan of HP5, so keen to try this. When printing 25 years ago still, Kentmere products always lacked contrast. Iam keen to see if that has been resolved ( by the looks of your images, it has)

I think you’ll be very happy with it! I enjoyed the film quite a bit and bought several more rolls to experiment with.

Thanks, I might try it. I have often used Pan 100 and got good results.

Nice review! Love the shots at 1600. What's the dev time?

Why do I prefer the shots you find are too dark or muddy? 😅

They do actually look pretty cool. I don’t hate them. I mean if I were trying to maximize shadow detail, they’d be a bit underexposed but they do have a cool, graphic quality to them.

I've been primarily shooting Kentmere 400 for the last 3 months because I bought a 100ft roll for $71 and bulk loading is fun! been mainly shooting it at 400 and 800 and developing it in Rodinal with pretty good results, however recently I decided to push it all the way to 3200. developed it at a 1+100 dilution of Rodinal for 3hrs agitating for the first minute than agitating for 30 seconds at the 1hr 30 minute mark, and was shocked at the results. It maintains its lower contrast, and has sort of noticeable yet pleasant grain. Would highly recommend trying it out!

I bought a bulk 100ft roll. Not as fine grain as HP5+ but this is the film I use when I want to see grain. For that look Rodinal was my go to developer. BTW this film shines in120 as a good general purpose film👍

I shoot it quite often. It’s what I use to film test my cameras prior to sale. I too notice a fair amount of grain. I like that it isn’t too contrasty and it renders tones and colors well. I develop mine in HC110. Thanks for the video!

Just bought some of this in 35mm and 120, and then found your channel. It would be super interesting if you could do a video comparing all the films you have reviewed.
