Our 70 year abode is starting to lose tiles and needs some TLC. Not ready for a full remodel yet. This was extremely helpful. Thanks for posting.

I have a rental property shower that has similar vintage tiles like the upper yellow ones. Cracks everywhere seem to be causing major leaks into basement below. Does it make sense to try & remove old grout and regrout? The grout lines are TINY. Like 1/32". If so, how would one remove the grout? Smallest tools seem to be 1/16" wide. I have an oscillating multifunctional power tool.
@guitarfixx46524 ай бұрын
I have an oscillating tool. I have one toothless blade, very thin, like a flexible putty, knife. If it was me, I would hacksaw some notches into it and try that. Then I would use an unscented epoxy grout that does not need to be sealed. or better yet, the grout renewal companies do a good job and are surprisingly affordable many of them. I would try that.

@@guitarfixx4652 Thanks for replying! At your great suggestion, I just talked to a grout cleaning/sealing company. Guy says the "waterproofing sounds compromised" and that mere grout renewal prob won't last more than a few months (then leak again). Gonna see what a tub & tle REFINISHING company thinks tomorrow; they essentially make all old things white and fresh, per website pics. Grout guy thinks that might last a year before leaking again. Sigh, might not be able to avoid a complete shower demo / rebuild.

what is the name of that tile cuter ? that looks like a knive ?? & where can I buy it??? what do u call that hand held tile cuter ??
@KentSchneeveis8 ай бұрын
I used a regular angle grinder. Then I used a fibre type wheel, will say "for masonry," It's okay to use one of those. I used a speed square to make a square mark with a pencil. The other tools were just putty knife. I had a small plastic notched trowle, some rags, water, old paint brush 'duster brush.' I small square nose brick layers trowle and a pointed one too. nothing fancy really. You can do it!

Is that just painter's tape that you are using to hold the tiles to the wall?

Can I use simpleset over mortar?
@KentSchneeveis11 ай бұрын
I don’t know… I don’t trust the premix stuff. I think it’s better to use a dry mix, thin set mortar because in my experience, it grabs and sticks better. Plus it’s what was there to begin with. It’s going to work better with the existing stuff.

Hi, how to mend tiles from jerking out of the wall
@surgingcircuits6955 Жыл бұрын
Newbie Question: Is it reasonable to use a 20-30yr silicone in place of the cement to hold the tiles in place? Thx.
@KentSchneeveis Жыл бұрын
No. It’s flexible. You do not want that. A thin set mortar with the bonding adhesive. Brushton will stick like gangbusters. Use that. Then grout.

Do you think if you back buttered in the opposite dorection, you could have worked it left to right to collapse the ridges ? Is there a reason to going in that direction.
@KentSchneeveis Жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter what direction. Just make sure to work it in there good. Don't do like some guys and just put a couple of dabs on there and sorta push it against the wall and walk away.
